In Six Months, Microsoft Will Pull The Plug On Some Parts Of Windows 7 Support

Microsoft is warning customers that the end is soon coming for free Windows 7 support. Microsoft will end free mainstream support for Windows 7 on January 13, 2015.

The end of support generally means no more updated features or performance improvements, unless you are covered by extra "extended support."

UPDATED: Microsoft has promised to provide security patches even after it ends mainstream support, through 2020. What is ending is design changes, warranty claims and no-charge incident support.

This move will mostly affect consumers. Businesses that pay for extended support for Windows 7, as most of them do, will get all updates for another five years, until January 14, 2020.

There's some speculation that, given the popularity of Windows 7, Microsoft might change its mind as the date nears and continue to support it a bit longer, like it did for Windows XP. All told, Microsoft supported XP for about 13 years.

By the way, Microsoft also set an end-of-life of mainstream support for Windows 8 (including the latest version, Windows 8.1), for January 9, 2018.

for the millionth time, microsoft.

So you are going to make all updates for businesses that give you money but only give Security updates to the people who paid for the same product.

If you make a freaking update that improves a product make it available to everyone not just the businesses that are still giving you money.

Windows 9 better be good and come out before that date, and not be overpriced.

It still will be overpriced but one can hope

Damn XP was long lived!

This kind of annoys me because I was planning on keeping 7 for a while...

At least we get security patches, but no more features/performance upgrades (obviously Direct X)

I'm okay with that if they release an OS THAT YOU CAN USE WITH A MOUSE before killing Win7. No problem then.

Molex to SATA, lose all your data

Are you FUCKING kidding me? Once one of their OSes gets popular, they give consumers the middle finger and pull the plug on it. Beginning to like Apple and Linux more and more every day.

I guess Win9 is just going to be out pretty damn early into 2015. Maybe by the end of Q2.

And this (stopping support in some areas) is pretty normal from Microsoft, I thought..

When exactly did they stop supporting XP outside of security again?.. Yeah.

It doesn't takes much to assume Windows 9 will have always-online DRM. Otherwise they wouldn't be trying to strong arm people out of windows 7

Oh and by the way, Let's update the list of motherfucking lies from Microsoft and their commitment to PC gaming when they said DX12 would come to windows 7.

Nah, I'll bet you they will go back on that and make DX12 a Windows 9 exclusive: you just wait and see. They'll just come up with some bullshit about how its technically not possible.

Microsoft is getting worse every moment I hear about them on the news.

It's both. Sempai is also correct due to the lips closing during "n" and opening during "pa" which creates Sempai. It's written as (先輩)せんぱい (Senpai), but ultimately romanization of 先輩 can be Sempai or Senpai.

This  is kind of depressing. Windows 8 is a steaming pile of shit, so I guess I have to stick with an unsupported os for a while.

As I am gaming less and less because of work and loving Linux more and more because of work as well, I think when Win7 loses support I am gonna drop Windows completely. I will just sit here playing Spacebase and Metro 2033/LL Redux, and some WoW through wine and hope Linux adoption spreads :P

all that rage, but doesn't all of those dates are set even before the os release or just a few months after, yeah xp was extended but i bet it had an end of support date well before people cared about it, i'm not saying this is good but its something that has been know LONG ago.

this is one of the greatest thing that has happened to me recently, and it happened on this forum, those involved have my eternal gratitude http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/198850-update-alex-got-his-moto-g2-lets-get-a-moto-g-for-alexgoeshigh-unofficial/ :')

i use to have the second best link in the world here, but it died ;_; its a 404 now but it will always be here

Is that not suicide. I mean you are taking your most popular OS by far and sending it to the gallows to be executed at that point and your next OS is a pile of utter shit. Unless Windows 9 is what we actually want I don't see Microsoft being relevant in the neat future on the OS industry. Linux is making leaps and bounds and neither Mac OS nor Windows is making any serious improvements on the user experience or performance.

Of course, it should be noted that just because they've "ended support" doesn't that everyone's Windows 7 machines will instantaneously explode. It just means that they won't be actively focusing their efforts on improving Windows 7, because let's face it, it is many years old by this point..

They'll continue security updates, but what does everyone expect them to do? Continue supporting an old OS for the rest of your life /s?

i7 not perfectly stable at 4.4.. #firstworldproblems
