Apple introduces a new Pencil for the iPad... it's $79. No pressure sensitivity.

Avaviel

Summary

Apple added another SKU to their pencil lineup. (No new iPads for some reason?)

Quotes

Quote

Apple has announced a new version of its popular Pencil peripheral for the iPad. Simply dubbed "Apple Pencil" yet again, it is the cheapest option to carry the name yet.

The new Pencil is priced at $79; that's $20 cheaper than the first-generation Apple Pencil and $50 cheaper than the second generation. Apple says it will work with any iPad model with a USB-C port.

My thoughts

Go home Apple you're drunk.

This would MAKE SENSE only if it replaced the Apple Pencil 1. The Apple Pencil 2 has features. The Apple Pencil 1 has value. It was like Apple said, "If you like USB-C so much HERE.

What is even the point of this except confusing customers for money

Exactly!

And, even worse, I've found the Pencil 2 on sale for $80 to $89. (I forget the exact price.)

May as well just use a damn dry erase marker! Though if you're gonna draw digital art that might pose a slight problem lol

I have a laptop that was manufactured in 2011, with a first gen i5. The stylus that came with it has multiple levels of pressure sensitivity. But this is Apple, and they know that people will be suckered into buying a pencil without the features simply due to the brand.

This makes perfect sense. The old Apple Pencil is basically obsolete in the eyes of Apple if you can't charge it on their new devices. Makes sense to me 🤷🏻‍♂️

That’s what they should be releasing, and that’s what this should be. A simple USB C update to the Apple Pencil, with two SKUs.

but the marketing and finance department found out about the engineering department trying to improve the product.

I just checked my 3$ generic pen without Apple and I want to make a complaint. It lacks batteries that can be charged wirelessly, I cannot attach it to anything magnetically and also when I use it to draw on a tablet nothing changes when I tilt it. Where do I complain?

Also, can you please point me to a store where I can get these generic 3$ pens that have all the features listed above?

You have very demanding needs. In your case you'll need to spend at least $6 on a pen.

Oh you want tilt too. Yeah then you'll want a 15$ pen that supports it. Unsure if they'll have batteries since that isn't needed for this feature. Magnets probably it's just magnets.

The magnet in it is one of those special magsafe magnets and that's what makes it very expensive.   Also it took quite a lot of R+D to work out how to extract more money from apple customers without giving the game away.

Haha I see the anti-Apple circle jerk has already started, you are all so bloody funny, damn I missed the start.

This new Apple one doesn't have this either 😉

Right, type C only (which everyone and their dog except people that actually use Apple products screamed for for years), so I'll strike wireless charging.

Where can I get this 15$ pen that has a type C port for charging, attaches magnetically and has tilt support? Matching build quality also, please.

However, since you claimed it being a "generic 3$ pen" before, even though you knew about all the features it has, where does the sudden 5x increase come from? That's rather steep. So you get to pick, show me a matching pen in the range of 3-15$.

That‘s for starters a 20$ pen, so over 6x what you claimed.

And still from AliExpress, so I‘d like to see if this has comparable build quality and ergonomics.

As I said you can get it somewhere else for less like aliexpress. I bought mine for 9$ there as a spare for the ipad.

As for quality it's a plastic pen and it's flat. It's basically just like holding a normal bic or 1st gen apple pencil but with more corners so it doesn't rotate much at all when writing which is great.

It literally does all the apple pen usb c thing does also it has a usb c port.

That's 3x what you claimed while buying from Ali and comparing to buying from a domestic US dealer/site. Apples and Oranges.

You got 4 reaction points though from people that enjoy a slapstick joke, though, so you got that going for you.

So this is cheaper than the 1st gen and 2nd gen, has the new interface (USB-C), but less features. Yeah I'm not seeing the problem. This isn't a replacement for the 2nd Gen, it's a new "lower entry" SKU for people who don't want to spend as much on the 2nd Gen.

As noted already, there are 3rd party options if people don't want to pay the Apple Tax, which is a known factor. I assume the 2nd Gen Pencil will get an update at some point with USB-C (though at that point they might simply call it the 3rd Gen).

For Sale: Meraki Bundle

iPhone Xr 128 GB Product Red - HP Spectre x360 13" (i5 - 8 GB RAM - 256 GB SSD) - HP ZBook 15v G5 15" (i7-8850H - 16 GB RAM - 512 GB SSD - NVIDIA Quadro P600)

2nd gen doesn't need USB-C. It's wireless charging. It's sitting on top of my iPad currently, at 100%. Honestly the product is perfect in it's current state. I paid $89 my my Pencil II. It goes on sale often! (A replaceable battery would be nice.)

Then, with the Apple Pencil I, it's stuck with lighting adapter awkwardness. This new USB-C thing SHOULD replace it. But noooo. Because the new thing is missing features, you must now choose between more expensive or less features.

Ahh - okay, that makes this current product make even more sense.

Honestly, I don't see a problem, given that it's already cheaper than the 1st Gen pencil. Either you want a cheap less features version, or the more expensive version.

Maybe they'll create a middle product replacement eventually, maybe they won't.

So Apple's biggest innovation this year is USB C on the iPhone and Apple Pencil.

They just had to give up a few features, but hey, I guess that's worth it, right? 😂
