Nvidia: Unlaunching the 12gb 4080

The question now is Nvidia going to release it as the RTX 4070 or is it going to be something else. Even though it hasn't been officially announced there's no doubt that Nvidia would have finalised plans for the 4070 card months ago. RTX 4070 Super? RTX 4070 Ti?

For me based on specs and indicative performance the most suitable would be RTX 4070 Ti

This news came two day after the 4090 went on sale.

I wonder if pereliminary sales numbers for the 4090 made Nvidia realize that there aren't anymore VCs founded ethereum mining operations queuing outside AIB factories to buy pallets of GPUs at whatever price Nvidia demands.

Nvidia needs to go back to the drawing board to select new price points and names for the cards. The gap between the 4090 and the 4080 is gargantuan this time around.

If Nvidia ships the 4080 12GB and it's available for 850 euros I buy it day one (works out to 700usd without vat). It's still faster than 3080 and i'll pay the extra just to try the features and to have warranty compared to used market.

I payed this much for a 3080, in March, brand new, with warranty. 850 Euros is still a bad value proposition.

That's how much a 3080 still costs... The value calculation has shifted by a lot.

I'm guessing they have the 4070 already planned so this will likely be the TI, with whatever the 4070ti was originally going to be being demoted to a "super" card. We'll see though

I'm sure the AIB partners, who've almost certainly been building marketing, box art, silkscreens of "4080" etc on all the cards are just SO. ECSTATIC. to get to re-brand them all.

EVGA really coming out of this looking smart...

Even easier, make the RTX 4080 12GB China/Asia only SKU and just do a one off sale there of all inventory. Nvidia has done such a thing before lol

Don't forget there will be no compensation and the MSRP will probably get lowered too. 😂

Or make it OEM only. Dell and HP would not hesitate to slap "RTX 4080" on the spec sheet and use the cheaper 4080 12GB cards.

Realistically, Nvidia can't drop the price of what was the 4080 12GB without looking bad can they?

If they can knock $200 off the 12GB, then why can't they do the same for the 4080 16GB, or the 4090?

If they knock $200 off, then that's basically admitting they were overcharging, and I really can't see Nvidia doing that.

All they've said is they got the name wrong, not the price. I fully expect to see it, whatever they name it, at the same price

Nvidia probably realized they screwed up, either they thought they might get sued for having 2 80 tier cards with completely different specs, or AMD might have a competitive RDNA3 card.

Although the product stack makes no sense now, with the 4080 16GB at $1200, there isn't any room for a 4070 at $800-900. And the AIB's are getting screwed so hard if there were already 4080 12GB cards.

The actual planned 4070 probably used the same die.  I'm guessing they are just going to save them for that launch.  Hopefully at a decent price.

The 4090 for this tier of graphics card has sold quite well.  It is really the only good card of the bunch.  If they can get the 16GB card down under $900 it would be an ok card as well.

Off topic but how is that 1000w G6 handling the 4090? I am not in the market for one (I really want an all red amd machine with a 7800xt if it's not insanely priced) and I am guessing it will have a similarly high TDP.

How would it not handle it? 5900X + the rest of the system probably uses 250W max and the 4090 maxes out at 450W. That's if you somehow manage to load up both the CPU and GPU at the same time, which never happens.

How could you tell if it's not handling it? Not to mention any reasonable power supply will hold 120-130% load for a loooong time before shutting down so even if it magically became overloaded you wouldn't be able to tell.

Did they, though? EVGA sells what now? Super high end Intel Mobos and rebranded power supplies? It's like when Tony Stark's company Stark Industries stops selling weapons in the first Iron Man movie.

They make AMD motherboards now too

I dont think the AIBs got screwed over as much as everyone thinks with the coolers and such, if they didnt label them 4080 12gb and just 4080, they can just slap the coolers on the cheaper model 4080 16s and call it a day. The ones they did buy yeah they got screwed on which sucks, but they are use to that by now.

Nvidia still cant be trusted when it comes to this stuff, so i expect either a dump of GPUS in china or a completely diff product in a year when its out of the minds of people

It'll be interesting to see what will happen with all the 3rd party AIB partner cards that might already exist. The 4080 launch was set for November so AIB partners would surely have 4080 12GB cards made ahead of launch... Seems EVGA got out at a good time.

So, the box art, plastics on the card, and VBIOS will all report a 4080. But the relaunch will have a 40xx sticker slapped on the box at sale??

I hope the affix it at an angle with a font that similar to a rejection notice 🤣

I just don't know how they position the stack now. No one is going to buy a 4070 at $899, or even $799. The most expensive they could get away with would be like $649. Then they look like they were just trying to scam us

And they are going to buy the 4080 16gb at 1200? I am not sure why you would assume that they wouldn't sell the 4070 for 900 when they are selling the 4080 for 1200.

I haven't even pushed it much over about 700W.  I'm running an 85% power target so it tops off about 635W for the entire system.
