How to run higher than the maximum resolutions on your display

Monitor: Achieva Shimian Q300-IPSM 2560 x 1600. 

Running with an Evga GTX 780 Classified.

 

I can't achieve a resolution above the native one. However, I can overclock the refresh rate through the Nvidia Control Panel. Should I OC my refresh rate?

Question. When the new ROG monitor comes out should I do this? It's already going to be 1440p but I may want more if this is going to make my graphics way better. Do you guys recommend me to do this?

I thought I'd add my share to the upcoming database, so let's get this going.

 

I'm running an MSI N660-2GD5/OC to an Acer AL1703, with a SINGLE DVI-I to VGA adapter, using 1280x1024@60hz as default rez.

This is a tricky setup in itself, because of the monitor's capabilities.

 

First, I couldn't get the custom resolution working at all, I was glitching all over the place, so I figured something must be off because of my unusual 5:4 ratio, then googled "5:4 downsampling" and found this excellent post, after which I was able to solve all of my problems. As it turns out, the DVI and the VGA cables have a much lower maximum bandwidth than modern alternatives.

 

The DVI specification mandates a maximum pixel clock frequency of 165 MHz. With a single DVI link, the highest supported standard resolution is 2.75megapixels (including blanking interval) at 60 Hz refresh. For practical purposes, this allows a maximum screen resolution at 60 Hz of 1,915 × 1,436 pixels (standard 4:3 ratio), 1,854 × 1,483 pixels (5:4 ratio), or 2,098 × 1,311 (widescreen 16:10 ratio).

Then below it also notes DVI-D resolutions to include: 

WQUXGA (3,840 × 2,400) @ 33 Hz with GTF blanking (2 × 159 MHz)

Which is a higher resolution, though at a much lower refresh rate.

 

So, I ended up setting my resolution to 1854x1483 and it worked perfectly!

 

This is why I love the Masterrace; you can enjoy your shit way beyond the normal capabilities of the gear you're using.

Even though this is nowhere near the 3000xWhatever resolutions you guys can produce, I'm still very happy right now!

Acer G276HL Doesnt rescale back to ten 1080p it just attempts to display the higher resolution. So my monitor odes not down scale it just distorts the image quality making it look worse

ive got a samsung s22c300 led up to 260x1440 at it starts to blur? is it supposed to happen?

Saw this thread back when it was first made and ive been doing it for 1440p since but i never pushed it further than 3200x1800 but today i got it to 3840x2160 and simcity looks pretty incredible even tho its pretty damn laggy and barely runs also 4k only runs when i have my second monitor plugged in if i dont have it plugged in i get black screen also i had to change the timings to the ones that the guy used in the nvidia link.

I have a GTX 660ti and the monitor Im runing a LG E2242 and Windows 8.1, I achive 2560x1440. But Its a bit blurry. In game performance i didnt see a big hit.

i have a dell 3007WFP (2650x1600 native rez)  (using dual link DVI)

there is something odd

when luke was  in the control panel "adjust desktop size and position"

 

it showed "perform scaling on" Display

 

for me it shows GPU and i cant choose anything else

 

anyways i clicked over ride anyways and tried 3840x2160 and 3840x2400 and said "test failed"

maybe its because i have an old GPU or something

I have a crappy LG22M35A 1080p monitor connected with D-sub only-.-(using dvi to d-sub adapter) and i was suprised that i could even run @2560x1440. I tested it at bf4 because that's the only game i play right now.

According to fraps, these are the numbers: Avg: 57.183 - Min: 44 - Max: 63 everything maxxed out ofc. It blew my mind.

 

Then, i tried 4k ofc but the monitor couldn't support it.

After that,i tried 2880x1620(that's 3k isn't it?) and it worked.The fps is more surprising: Avg: 45.183 - Min: 29 - Max: 61.

I'm running a PA238Q 1920x1080 60 hz via DP with a MSI GTX 770, the highest resolution i could get to was 2928x1647 and i was able to overclock the refresh rate on that resolution to 71 hz, whereas i normally use it as 1920x1080 @ 80 hz

using a Acer H236HL bid 23" monitor and a GTX 670 and able to do 2560 x 1600 but looks funny because not using all of the screen and only using half so then, I down scaled it to 2560 x 1440 and looks the pixels look kind of blurry with words

A lot of you still aren't doing it right.

 

Open NVC>

Go to "Adjust Desktop size and position">

Select "Perform Scaling on GPU">

Tick "Override the scaling mode set by games and programs">

Go to "Change Resolution">

Click "Customize">

Create resolution ex: 2560x1440>

Test, if successful click "OK">

Do not set new resolution as your current one, if your native resolution is 1920x1080 then leave it at that. Running a non standard resolution forced onto your monitor will degrade picture quality>

start game of choice>

Go to game's options menu>

Set custom resolution as chosen resolution>

Confirm Settings>

Play>

Enjoy better image quality and adjust settings for performance as needed

Been looking for this for a while thanks for posting it ^ ^, downsampled to 1080p from 1440x900.

This fix my stuttering in dota 2 for some reason.

from 1440x900 had random fps: 150 to 90

1920x1080 stable 120-110fps.. weird as hell.

Unfortunately I could not get this to work on my DIY Gsync Monitor.

I'm running:

4670k OC 4.6ghz

maximus VI gene

Evga 770 SC

Asus vg248qe  with DIY G-sync kit.

 

If anybody has success with a similar setup please post it, I would really like to try this out!

edit:  I did try going down to 60hz and still no luck, I also tried disabling G-sync and that didn't seem to do the trick either

 

edit2:  I finally got it to work!! I'm not sure how I did it but I'll post what I did and maybe someone will have luck with it also.

1. disable g-sync

2. power cycle monitor

3. change custom res to 30hz 1440p

4. increase refresh rate by 10hz until 60

5. Enable G-sync

6. profit

 

Unfortunately it is too much to ask my privileged eyes that have been gaming on 144hz to play on 60hz, so while this is cool and the extra screen real-estate is useful, I am going to have to revert to native resolution

I was unable to get my ASUS PB278Q passed its native 2560x1440p   :angry:  Monitor didn't crash or anything just got an error that said test failed at XXX resolution. 

 

Win 7 was being used. 

 

I did however get my Dell u2412m to 2880x1620 mo problem but its not that much different from 1440p anyway. The u2412m failed to reach 4k.

Didn't work in 4k, the screen just went black for about 5-10 seconds, and back to the dialog box with no confirmation box or anything. 1440p did work.

The desktop and browser does look kind of bad, so if there's a fix on that, let me know.
Battlefield 4 does look a lot better, in my opinion.

ok so im using a  Dell s2340m 1920x1080P monitor. i have it at 2560x1440 right now. and games look fine but my desktop is blurry. it makes me not  even want to surf the web or do anything outside of gaming.  how can i fix this. i was messing with the scaling (text size) settings and trying to make some stuff larger being that everything is smaller when i do this, it helps out a little but text and apps still have blurred text and just looks like im running a lower resolution than native on the desktop.  its driving me nuts.
