- Smallest pickup

- 2.4L Hybrid standard; 40mpg city

Hybrid or not, this could fill a pretty big use case since they made the Ranger almost as large as the 150.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

It would fit in my garage, that's for sure.

Most people who buy trucks don't use most of what trucks are capable of; this would fit the use case for most people.

And it's cheap and efficient, without the worries people would have for full electric of plug in-hybrids.

For me I feel like this is the same thing as a honda ridgeline. It doesn't have the space, the payload or towing to be useful as a truck and it doesn't have the seating capacity or enclosed cargo space that you would get with an SUV. The lack of locking diffs and a tcase for 4High and 4low also kind of kills it for me since the lack of 4x4 is also massive loss of possible utility. To me the entire point of a truck is utility and I feel like this is a perfect storm where it simply doesn't have any utility other than you can have a piece of plywood hanging 4ft out of the truck.

Ultimately though, everyone's needs are different and I can't make that judgement call for anyone but my self but for me its a hard pass lol. 🙂

That's the thing though - those features are available in vehicles that already exist. For people that need those things, obviously the Maverick isn't the right vehicle for them.

The Ridgeline is a good point to bring up. It's not as capable as a "real truck", but it's priced in competition with them. The Maverick corrects that problem by being more capable than a compact car, but not priced to compete with actual trucks.

As for SUVs, at this price point, it's difficult to find one that has the same capabilities.

This isn't for truck people. It's a "truck" for non-truck folks, with the most compelling parts being it's low price (cheaper than a Honda Civic) with a fuel efficient hybrid system.

I'm excited for the new Lightning. I've got a 150 now, and there's times where I wish I had a bigger truck. If I'm still in the states in a couple years the Lightning might be the next vehicle purchase. 150 goes to old lady and electric for around town and dump runs. That particular one I need to see how it does in Alaska winters... -30c isn't too uncommon where I live. Plus range is necessary (85 miles each way from Anchorage which has almost no charging stations yet). This Maverick could fill that spot if the lightning doesn't do well in cold weather.. If there is an FX4 or 4wd version.

I did not notice that price. I was definitely under the impression they were going to pull the bs of if it looks like a truck it will be priced like a truck lol. That definitely makes things a lot more interesting since thats like 16-20k cheaper than anything else. I think for the 20k US they're asking that's very reasonable for what it is. That's about a price point where many of these smaller trucks should be or at least like 20-27k USD range. That's one thing that bugged me when I was truck shopping in 2019, price was definitely a sticking point for me. I was originally looking at Tacoma's, Canyon/Colorado and the Ranger but I ended up going with a Sierra 1500 simply because it was like 5k CAD more for a 6'6'' box and way more towing/payload. I couldn't justify what I was spending on a smaller truck when I could get the real deal for not much more.

Same thing for me a decade or so ago when looking at Frontier, Tacoma.

Ended up getting a Ram 1500

The Maverick will also be available in a non-hybrid version with a turbocharged 250-horsepower engine that can produce up to 277 pound-feet of torque.

Eh that 2.0T engine is in pretty much the whole lineup. Not really unique or interesting tbh. Also don't think it will be what most people end up with in this model. The base hybrid is going to be most common.

So basically my car is now a truck when it comes to towing 🤔

Time to put a hitch on it.

lol I mean why not if it supports it?

Lots of things share technologies and parts, it what makes things cost effective.

For the longest time Dodge just put a truck engine in everything to make it "muscle" but that doesn't make them trucks.

It's just easier that way than having something specific for just one model.

The "New Ranger is the same size as the F-150" meme is not really accurate.

Nevertheless this looks like a neat little vehicle, much more practical for most users than most of the full-size trucks that a certain type of person buys as a luxury vehicle now. I used to work in an office building where a couple of floors were used by ATF and DHS and lots of ex-armed forces guys worked there. Parking lot was full of lifted, extended cab, extended bed pickups, always spotless even after weekends, and most had probably never hauled anything bigger than new armchairs from Nebraska Furniture Mart.

Will keep an eye on it next time I need to replace my commuter.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

When I had my RAM, I used it for maybe 2 or 3 events where it actually came in handy (hauled my dad's boat once, and another time carried back a bunch of bricks) but for everything else, it was not used in a capacity that this little pickup couldn't probably also do.

Regarding bricks, I ended up just ordering them delivered anyway because there was no way I was doing that many trips with the amount of bricks I needed.

All vehicles are getting huge.

I had a 2017 Civic Sedan...thing was as big as my 1994 Accord.

My 2016 Acura TLX (Read: Honda Accord) is as big as the old Acura Legend, which was a full size lux

Right. So the new Ranger is closer in size to the Maverick than it is to the F-150. Of course, adding 90's models of the Ranger and F-150 to the comparison might be instructive as well.

I was really hoping for a plug-in hybrid. My commute is only 11 miles round, wood mill 30 miles, and wood tools 68 miles. This would have been perfect as I've been eyeing the Prius plug-in.

I was really hoping for a plug-in hybrid. My commute is only 11 miles round, wood mill 30 miles, and wood tools 68 miles. This would have been perfect as I've been eyeing the Prius plug-in.

Can we get a 2-door with a longer bed instead?

I think both of those would have probably increased cost, and I think they wanted to really aim hard for the "$19,995" mark to say it's under $20k.

Tooling for just one body style is cheaper for sure, and those extra components/design for plug in hybrid would probably have made them unable to make it to that price and/or allow the hybrid to be "standard".

I like the fact they want a smaller truck, but it's still to large.  I'm still glad I have my 98 Chevy S-10.  It's the perfect size for hauling my motorcycle and project materials from home depot or Lowes. If I need a bigger truck, I take my Western Star with my 53 foot trailer.

Think it kind of had to be - there's no way to have accomplished that without a regular cab, and this probably had to have 4 doors to be viable for the general public.

There is no market for a compact 2 door truck with a longer bed. There wasn't even in the 90's and 2000's, they all got decisively outsold by the extended cab models. There isn't even any market for 2 door models of full size pickups like the F-150, except as work vehicles for businesses.

I guess it makes sense if you need to haul a few things, but the base comes with a CVT so I wonder how well it would actually haul or tow stuff.

But I think the hype for this truck is that it starts at $20k, but I'd be curious how much it actually costs and what the options are.

It would be a good fleet vehicle though, cheap and good fuel mileage.

My parents had a Ford maverick.  Wasn’t a pickup.  Not sure what it would be the same as.  Smallest cheapest car Ford made.  Had a fake spoiler built into the back trunk lid.
It was considered my moms car.  Had vinyl seats.  Story is one year my mom sat down in the car and the seats shattered because the vinyl got too cold.  Thing I remember most about it was it was the first time I caught air in a car.  I was late for a dentist appointment and the sitter drove it kinda hard.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.
