Just for fun, your GPU timeline.

ivanrcks95

This is just a bit of fun. Was scrolling through old photos i had and found this gem from 2012, when i upgraded from my HD5450, to a GT610. It got me thinking, what has been my GPU timeline, so here it is, i dont have pics of them all but ill try my best.

2007-2010 Nvidia 8500GT - was in a prebuilt my parents gifted me. My first gaming PC. no pics sadly.

2010-2012 Radeon HD5450 - this was the GPU i swapped into the prebuilt as an upgrade.

2012-2014 Nvidia GT610 - same prebuilt, just an upgraded GPU.

2013-2016 Nvidia GTX 660m - my main gaming laptop through uni.

2014-2016 Nvidia GTX 750ti - first ever actual build.(only have pic of GPU mounted inside)

2016-2019 Nvidia GTX 1050ti - upgrades to the first build i did.

2019-2020 Nvidia GTX 1660super - my second ever build.

276114.c26a206eed27bf555f4d89f761a6f7b7_1600.jpg.1bb771724a0b08af177e5c3791830929.jpg

2020-now Nvidia RTX 2070 - was a $50 upgrade to the second build.

20200908_163758.thumb.jpg.00c9a9c62cd7255fa22c3f385de0d961.jpg

This was a fun trip down memory lane. Also cool to see how ive progressed from sub-budget peasant tier cards, to an okay rig now. What has been your GPU timeline? Im sure people here will have cards far far older than my 8500GT, it will be cool to see!

For my main system(s) I went R9 290X ➡️ GTX 960 ➡️ GTX 980Ti ➡️ GTX 1080 ➡️  GTX 1080Ti (still using)

I wish I had pics of some of my old GPUs.

I have owned a few other GPUs as well for other systems a GTX 980, another GTX 980Ti, GTX 1060, another GTX 1080, RX 580, and the RX 5700 would be more recent.

But since I got my 1080Ti it is the longest I have not upgraded going all the way back to my R9. Waiting for a 3080Ti or AMD equivalent though.

- GTX 275. $20 to replace a dead GT210. In 2013 mind you, too old for games already.

- RX 470: First card when I wanted to start playing games. Sold during the mining craze

- GTX 1070: Guess where the RX 470 money went. Added about $120 for it.

- GTX 1060 6GB mobile: Studying in a foreign country, unrealistic to bring the old build out.

Also bought a GTX 295 and GTX 580 Matrix for the sake of owning one

We used to live in a tiny little apartment in central Houston around 2010-2013 and we had very little money, so much so that my bedroom was just a glorified closet, I had always watched a load of Minecraft, and always wanted to play the game. To my suprise I got a tiny office computer for Christmas ( not sure the specs but I know that it could barely run Minecraft in 2011 so..) at the time I guess I took it as granted but nowadays I realize that my parents definitely could have used that money for something else, regardless after about 3 years my parents found jobs in rural Louisiana in the oil company and we moved there in another apartment (this time with my room :) )  unfortunately in the moving process my parents decided to sell my first computer and I was crushed, I made it a goal to get the best computer out there and that I was going to pay for it with my own money. Fast forward to 2018 and we have full sized house in the same rural town but I just ordered a prebuild that had an i3 8350k a Zotac 1050 mini (2GB) and 8GB or ram, I did get some upgrades for it around a year later with a 1060 3gb and a i5 9400f. But just recently I build my first computer in august by myself with my own money from my first job without anybody’s help. 2080 super, 32gb trident z 3000mhz 5tb storage i7 9700k, liquid cooling and an 850w rgb power supply. Sorry for the long story, I just wanted to share my childhood goal that I just recently accomplished.

I think it was a GT210M or some NVIDIA gpu with a Pentium B950 in a Toshiba Satellite Laptop.

Then it was a GTX 1050 mobile inside an Asus ZX553VD

Then a MSI GTX 770 2GB OC,

And now I have a RX 480 8GB red devil.

I.... I can't remember them all.

So to shorten the list.

Several PCI cards (not pcie) example Geforce FX 5500

AGP cards, a few. MX 440 to Geforce 6800 GT

PCI-E lots of cards. The list would be long I think.

Also not limited to onboard and APUs.

Things really haven't gone smoothly for me on the GPU front lately:

2015-2019 GTX 750

2019: GTX 750 > RX 580 > GTX 750 > RX 590 > RTX 2080 > GTX 970

2020: GTX 970 > RX 5700 XT > GTX 980Ti

Geforce 6200 in 2004, died in months.

Geforce 6800 ultra in 2004, still in pc, sitting unplugged near current pc.

picked up 2nd used 6800 ultra for sli, don't remember year.

Intel iGPU on atom in 2009, still have that system

gtx 1050 in 2017-2018

Removed to use intel iGPU, ran games well enough. was simpler to get multi-monitor setup with old vga monitors working with iGPU.

late 2019-early 2020 put gtx 1050 in new ryzen 7 build

early 2020- now rx5700xt

near future, 5950x in current x570 mobo with rx5700xt(I know it is not balanced, odd use case),  ryzen 7 moving to new 450 mobo with the 1050 put back in.

Probably odd in how much I moved around a 1050, used iGPU so much, and have 16 years of computers sitting in row....

1060 ==> 1070 ==> 1080 ==> 2070 ==> 5700XT ==> 3070

Japan has a great used market so all the above only cost me about 1000 dollars in total.

2003-2011 - I had weird HP prebuild PC with ATI Radeon GPU. I don't know which model, it was red and no fans I think. During end of it's life it was artifacting but not crashing. I had to remove 1 ram stick from PC to start any software. Still games didn't crash!

2011 - HP laptop with integrated GPU. HD 3000? Maybe. It overheated and melted in 2 months. Screen stopped working.

2011-2015 - GT 650M, I bought a gaming laptop it for light gaming and school work. I almost killed this one with a cup of coffee. Saved by a rice bag.

2016-2020 - GTX 970M, another gaming laptop GPU. This was honestly way too expensive for what it was worth (it had maybe 1/3 of performance of actual 970).  It still works and I think my relative is playing Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 with it and told me it runs flawless.

2020 - RTX 2060

Fun post!

Home gaming set up

GTX 660

GTX 760

GTX 970 (this felt like a massive jump from my 760 for 1080p gaming)!

GTX 970 SLI (added a second used one in to eek out some more performance before upgrading to 1440p)

RTX 2080 for 1440p

RTX 2080 SLI (for 4k)...got tired of SLI and sold them both though

RTX 2080ti, custom loop (and currently happy with it)

Work PC

GTX 1660ti

RTX 2070

RTX 2080ti...sold on ebay by someone who apparently was happy to overpay (plan to ultimately replace with 3080 as it went for 1000$)

AMD 5700XT...immediately returned due to malfunctioning, freezing, blue/black screens.  Wont be going AMD again

(hilariously) 1660ti again...best card they had at bestbuy in store when I returned the 5700XT P.O.S.  Now a placeholder until 3000 series becomes available.

Amazing thread!

To start off, GeForce 256. I have no idea when I got it. I think it was paired with a 400Mhz Celeron in a horizontal beige case, but that's about all I remember

2006-ish - dad surprised us with a brand new gaming rig, with a 7600GS in it. Not exactly cutting edge, but it ran Oblivion like a champ. A lot of fun was had

2007 - my first venture into Gamer with a capital G territory. After working my teenage butt all summer, I updated the previously mentioned rig with a 8800 GTX. This was a shitty prebuilt with zero ventilation. My mods included breaking out all of the PCIe covers ant making a cardboard barrier to place in between the card intake and card exhaust, duct taped to the card of course. Dropped like 10 °C. Ran Crysis like a champ, and a hell of a lot of fun was had

2011 - Enter the dark ages. Between moving out and the beginning of the uni life, I had to ditch the desktop for a laptop. Enter Intel HD graphics. Ran, uhh... Medieval 2 Total War, if I recall correctly, like champ. Still fun

2015 - Still the same era, but a hell of an upgrade. Geforce 940M. Ran Skyrim like a champ. A lot of stealth archer characters were had

2019 - I'm back, baby. To commemorate finishing my dream degree and getting into my dream specialty (future pediatrician here btw), my parents and sisters pitched in cash for a build-it-yourself gift. A ridiculously overkill compensator-level PC. You can probably tell where this is obviously going, a 2080Ti. Runs Control like a champ. Also, folds like a champ! Currently in 52th place in the event. It's not looking very likely, but I still got hopes for top50
