Dutch company has first "Street Ready" Flying Car

 

IT'S NOW A REALITY    

 

PAL-V (Personal Air and Land Vehicle) is a Dutch company that is involved in the development of the first commercial flying car, the PAL-V Liberty. It is a compact two-person aircraft that can travel on public roads

• about $500,000 USD
• EU street ready
• delivery requires additional paperwork thus 2022 expected delivery
• beyond the street tests paperwork:
• Requires both a Driving & a Flying Licenses
• Two Seated vehicle
• described as quieter than a helicopter
• training for a gyroplane flying license at the PAL-V FlyDrive Academy
• in case of engine failure the gyroplane can be landed normally in a very small area equivalent to a tennis court

 

• The PAL-V LIBERTY is designed within existing certification requirements on the road as well as in the sky.
• ---For flying,       CS-27 (Europe) and FAR-27 (USA) are the standards on which the Type Certificate is based.
• ---For driving,     the road legislation directives of the European Commission and National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) standards are used.

Yeah we have a lot of tennis court sized places around here next to our streets, especially in tight city spaces, I don't see a problem at all with this "new" car. Lol

From what I can tell from pictures, it's just a car that pretty much converts into a helicopter, using the already problematic 3 wheel driving approach. I can see this going bad fairly quick.

The few Flying Cars I know about had wings that in "driving mode" that the driver/pilot had to manually fold them back in addiction to disconnecting the Prop Shaft from the Prop. BTW these were also Kits that had to be built.

It is a gyroplane, the large spinning prop acts as a wing would in a conventional aircraft generating lift. Its take offs are more like a regular aircraft so while you might be able to land in a tennis court* in an emergency, the company recommends a runway length of 900 ft for take off.

 

Looking at their FAQ, that tennis court comment seems to be only in "windy conditions". Probably meaning you need a strong head wind to land in such a small space.

 

I suppose everything needs a first step, but from a practical standpoint, you will have to drive to an airport to take off and then land at an airport. Anyone would be better off buying a trailerable gyroplane or other small aircraft and a vehicle cable of towing the trailer. That would be far more economical and practical.

Ah, I see. I thought it's more like an helicopter, that would definitely be better from a space requirement standpoint I think, even though of course also highly dangerous should someone decides to fly nilly willy through a city.

why would you want a flying car on the road? isn't the whole idea of flying cars that you won't need roads?

Flying Cars are still drive-able but you will need to fold the wings back or take them off.

Well reading the site. The Owner will still need a Separate Pilot license for Small Aircraft.
