Are you in a position to take full advantage of your speaker setup ?

Hi,

We live in a locality where the distance between the buildings is very narrow. There are kids who are students. There are also senior citizens.

If I increase the bass level of my subwoofer to the full people start complaining. You guys may laugh at me but the fact is I use headphones to

watch movies to avoid disturbing my neighbors. 

 

Are you in a position to take full advantage of your speaker setup ?

Using only Linux since 2007. Not a single MS Windows or Mac client at home.

unless you are rich it is completely impossible in this day and age to fully take advantage of speakers. that's the sad truth. nearly everyone these days lives like a rat and has neighbours  who can hear every moan

And with good reason...

Frankly, anyone who use a sound system with the subwoofer cranked up while living with neighbors right beside them, are complete scumbags who have zero respect for anybody. As such, they don't deserve to be respected either.

 

I had one such neighbor before.

We couldn't even live in our apartment because they would be playing their shitty music at all time of the day and night. Our beds would literally "vibrate"... and not in a good way... Could barely even hear ourselves think.

Calling the cops resulted in a fat load of nothing because not only would they stop their music quick enough to prevent the cops from hearing it (even if they hear it on the phone, it's not proof enough since we could be the one playing it and trying to frame them) but then THEY decided to be upset at us for that and starting calling the cops on us saying we were making too much noise... even though I've literally been walking tiptoed around the house since my youth to avoid making noise in the first place. But go prove you weren't bashing the floor, right? Like, bitch? Are you serious?

 

They sucked. I got zero pity for people who do that kind of shit in the city. 

You want to play your shitty music for the "world to hear" ? Get yourself a house away from anybody.

We live in a God damn society, you don't get to be selfish and be a complete asshat to everybody around, unless you're literally all alone in the middle of bumfuck nowhere. 

 

 

All that said, I use my headphones 99% of the time. I do have a cheap set of speakers that I use maybe once in a blue moon, it has a subwoofer too, but I've set it to the lowest, barely audible setting. Not just because of the neighbors, but also the sound quality. I prefer having clear audio since the stuff I listen to are usually "vocal" heavy and a cranked up subwoofer just make people sounds like complete shit in movies, youtube, twitch and what not.

I agree with TetraSky. If you live in a college town with house parties you'll quickly develop a hatred towards it. There was a house half a block away that would have so much bass when I would sleep I could feel it in my pillow. This would go on from friday night to monday morning

Thanks friends for the replies. At least now I know I am not alone. In future if I am able to arrange the amount of cash that is required to hire professionals who make rooms sound proof only then I will be buying a expensive Dolby Atmos setup. 

Using only Linux since 2007. Not a single MS Windows or Mac client at home.

Funny enough I do live in the middle of no where and I still don't crank the bass to max.

I'm not really an expert at the sound stuff. The manual doesn't really say about bass level on the receiver.

I bought my set up for watching movies on disk and I set the subwoofer to the settings recommended in the instruction manual.

I turn the volume up on the whole system sometimes when I'm watching a new movie that I'm excited to see but I'm after the best big movie sound.

Not the loudest bass vibrating through me to the exclusion of everything else. If you know what I mean.

It is super annoying to feel that especially if I don't even like the music. Which often I can't hear anything but the base anyway lol.

I've got an old head unit with some tube amps in it, but I run it through headphones. It gives a really nice tone, and I can listen as loud (or quiet) as I want. I like hearing, so I keep my volume down.

 

The acoustics of the room I'm in are absolute garbage, so I generally use the headphones only. I do have some JVC speakers, but they aren't the best quality.

This is why if you live in an apartment, you want one that has a concrete frame rather than those 5 or so story ones with wooden frames. Then you should be able to enjoy a movie without bothering your neighbours provided you don't have an IMAX setup or something.

I don't have to worry about neighbors but my setup isn't really in a big enough room to take full advantage of what I have acoustically speaking. It still sounds really good but I know it could be better. 

 

Sadly, due to the room size, only a 5.1 setup really makes sense despite my receiver being able to do 7.1 and I'm pretty much stuck with bookshelf speakers. I mean, they are really good bookshelf speakers but I do wish I had the space to do full standing speakers and 7.1. An Atmos setup is out of the question until I move into a bigger place.

No. I have 2 K12.2s (2K Watts) for me L/R and a KS112 (2K Watts) for my sub. They are meant for playing gigs, so are very much overpowered for my living room. They are connected to the TVs headphone jack, though, and each unit is self-powered. I just have them set with the LF only going to the sub.

 

If the sub is turned up to max, on some songs, I can shake the opposite corner of the house. So, I keep it turned down for the most part, and adjust it as needed for movies or music.

I don't laugh at you. In fact, I applaud you for not being an asshole and actually using headphones. Lower sound frequencies can be heard at a greater distance because the sine wave is so large, it's capable of traveling farthing and even penetrating more solids (such as wood and sheetrock used in houses). I live in a trailer park, you don't have a yard here. The "yard" is literally shared with the other homes around you. You still cut the grass of what would be your fair share though. But that's how cramped our homes are in here. It fucking sucks and should be illegal imo. But I have some asshole neighbours who watch movies and listen to music. They don't have their volumes up super loud either, but still louder than normal. I will admit to having called the police on them (it triggers my misophonia). Not to mention we do have township, and even HOA noise ordinances.

 

That said, I run sound for a few different churches. One of them just got a hella good upgrade (the whole room, sound, lighting, and projection system costed about 1.1mil. All good stuff too). I am excited to play Supernova by Laszlo (the LTT theme tune) and of course will crank that bass. But only because it won't disturb anyone near by, because the church is more remote.

That's a very nice setup there. One of the other churches I do sound for has two K12.2's and a KS212C. It's a really nice setup that's actually too powerful for the smaller room they're in right now. Once they move into a much larger space, it'll fill perfectly. The sub actually really should be turned down a bit yet. But I like to keep my bass guitar players happy.

Wait, so your definition of "being able to take full advantage" equals being able to crank the bass all the way up? Yeah, no, I do not agree. I have zero wish to crank the bass all the way up and I definitely do not see it as taking "full advantage" of the setup.

It depends on what kind of audio it is. For example if I am watching the news there is no way I want deep bass but if I am watching/listening to a music video then a good amount of bass sounds good to me.

Well I just gave my oldest son my Yamaha receiver and Klipsch reference speakers (no sub needed cuz they had the boom booms). Currently using Samsung 5.1 surround for home theatre and headphones for pc.

I don't care about neighbors if its a jammed packed situation. I lived in a paper thin wall apartment of a major brand for rentals and I never had a complaint and I am half deaf.

Yes and no. I have a house with a dedicated media room. I don't have to worry about neighbors but I do have to worry about my own family. There is no real soundproofing so I have to keep the volume low for nighttime viewing.
