The All AliExpress PC

AlexTheGreatish

We constantly make videos of weird stuff we find on AliExpress, but we've never built a computer completely out of AliExpress parts. Today that changes.

Maybe just buy a PC from somewhere that will get it to you fast:

What mains voltage is run at LMG HQ? Is it standard Canadian 120v?

The PSU is 240v (down to 170v I assume to allow for dodgy infrastructure brownouts) so it's not going to be delivering anywhere near it's stated wattage if it even barely works at all!

I am just waiting for someone to pour some isopropanol over that laser cut acrylic case.

Quick tip, don't. Laser cut acrylic will crack if exposed to IPA. Non laser cut acrylic is though fine.
The cut edges have stresses in them, and tends to form really tiny cracks, even if one has a well dialed in laser cutting settings for it. The IPA somehow just makes it crack...

That case though looks fairly good all things considered, maybe share a link to it so that GN can do a case review on it.

Also, that bottom intake is indeed rather lackluster. The case could need some actual feet. But at least it gives me ideas for what I can do in my laser cutter.

In regards to the power supply, have you checked that it can run on freedom voltages? I would be a bit surprised otherwise, considering that China partly runs 120 volt, and their neighbor Japan runs 100 volts.... Though, maybe the supply is just really cheaply built and doesn't have enough output capacitance to keep up with the load changes. (Easy test could be to just open it and see. I would personally expect at least 1mF of output capacitance on the 12 volt rail at the very least, preferably more...)

ps, that undead dragon mouse pad isn't dragony enough to be fair... Trust me, I know my dergs.

Ok, look. I know the video was a bit of fluff. For whatever reason, despite "China builds" or whatever being something of a trend right now, my go-to guys for both pretty good information and watching a bunch of dudes muck around with stuff just can't be bothered for some reason. Acknowledging I don't have the credibility to say something like this, this video was beneath your typically high standard.

The dance-break, glamour shot was deliciously silly. Credit where it's due.

The folks from LMG actively and consciously purchased a 400 watt power supply and then dismissed the power supply as junk. I mean, it almost certainly is not of a outside-of-Asia-market standard, but that's ridiculous. The gimmick with AX shopping is to go at it on that marketplace's own terms. Instead of trying to get something of a Western standard, go for a "garbage patch" board, an old Xeon, quad-channel DDR3 ECC for effectively modern memory speed, and a 1660, if even that much of a GPU. "Cheap and cheerful" was coined for a reason.

And get the above items for under $600 delivered to the US, Canada will almost certainly be different or not and who the [heck] knows anymore about shipping. This isn't the first time deliberately expensive parts were ordered and then judged not to be worth the expense. That is defying the object of the exercise. I don't have the credibility to hold you guys to a higher standard. I'm just some old retired geek, but you are just better than this. /old

I was very surprized to see Ryzen in this build. What's the reason of buying it, when you can buy used Xeon there? If the point was to make the cheapest pc from aliexpress, you should've gone with X79 or X99 Huanan Zhi motherboard with Xeon. It will use DDR3, which is also very cheap.

Example:

12 core CPU for just about 100$ https://aliexpress.ru/item/10000181392680.html

gaming motherboard for it, ~70$ https://aliexpress.ru/item/33057387836.html

32gb DDR3 ecc reg ram, ~65$ https://aliexpress.ru/item/4000409529087.html

fun note

the "1000w" psu they had there couldn't even do 400w, so i took some time for myself on AliExpress and went off to find a good PSU

https://aliexpress.com/item/32824114589.html

I present you, a decent PSU at actually quite a decent price

(and fits well with the Colorful theme, since they own Segotep)

@AlexTheGreatish I also want to know if the PSU was plugged directly in to the mains (120V?) or if it was running 240V AC input? Does LMG have 240V mains for the server room?

I think the same thing might have also happened in the wish PC build where the PSU also didn't work, though that could have also just been DOA considering the cheap quality of those unbranded PSUs.

Yes you can just paste the link up to the (.html?) without all the extra parameters. That would make it cleaner.

Yes, honestly i hate seeing the video. He doesn't take this seriously like other build projects.

There was a prejudice from the start, even from the parts picking process.

Acrylic case? Come on, is this 2005? Theres a ton of cool proper looking case on Aliexpress.

CPU, fine, i don't see why you would get a brand new 2700, when the price is practically the same.

That Snowman heatsink is also not that bad. You can get it cheaper than $40 if you look hard enough.

The worse part was he ended the video without even trying to solve the problem or at least try to make that pc run (like having another working PSU).

Too much goofing around.

This isn't a "How to build a PC from Aliexpress" guide video. This is a "We built a PC from Aliexpress and this was what happened" type video. They were sharing their experience of building a PC from hardware bought off aliexpress.

I think it's fair that they stopped after it wouldn't work because of the PSU. If someone was to buy parts themselves off aliexpress and make their own aliexpress PC then they won't have a warehouse of spare hardware to swap out when parts fail or are DOA. If people buy a PC off aliexpress and it doesn't work then that's it. Good luck shipping parts back to the seller, if they even take refunds it'll take weeks to ship it and the cost of shipping it back might be more than what the item is worth. If they swapped the aliexpress PSU for a working PSU from their warehouse then it would no longer be an aliexpress PC, and they're not going to delay the video another few months waiting for another PSU to arrive.
