What's on your "to do" list for projects? hardware/software related

paddy-stone

What's on your "to do" list?

Either hardware or software projects etc.

For me, I have a couple to plan out:

  • Get my homelab set up again. Try out proxmox again.
  • See if pfsense is usable on one of my old low wattage systems, maybe re-config my micro-server for this.
  • Try out an HTPC build again, to see if picture/performance is better than Nvidia Shield.... already have the hardware set up, just configuring it is required, and testing.
  • Try out some more Rpi projects.
  • 10-gig networking for my 2x Freenas boxes, and 1 or 2 PC builds.
  • Set up unraid on a 3rd server build possibly... low end hardware.

Please quote my post, or put @paddy-stone if you want me to respond to you.

  • Buy a New Ryzen processor. enough for a balance between performance and budget.
  • New graphics card, preferably something like a RX 580 or 570
  • New PSU to support all of this
  • Motherboard to support all of that lmao.
  • Wipe all of the unneceassry clutter on my HDDs for when I'll be upgrading to that new rig.

Either way, I'd be a looooonnnggg time since I'll be back earning enough to pocket cash to buy these types of hardware where I'm from.

I like seeing what other projects others are up to, sometimes it can be useful to you also, sometimes it gives you an idea for something else.

ATM mine is more focused on the NAS/server side, but mostly because I already have enough PCs and that side of things... hell I have a few unused systems sitting in my spare room, they just need PSUs for the most part, which is one reason why I have some of the projects in mind, to make use of the unused hardware.

I have a couple:

Getting my WiFi set up properly

(Hopefully) Upgrading my mother's laptop from 4GB ram

Fixing up the cable management and airflow in my PC, maybe upgrading to 32GB ram cause it's cheap right now

Getting a GPU that makes sense to pair with the rest of my system

Fixing the broken power button on my father's PC. Or rebuilding it in a new case.

Yep, that's the way to do it. If you just said "Hey, I'd love the new GPU that's out now", the answer would be something along the lines of "why, what's wrong with the one you have? you play on it enough, so it can't be bad!" 😜

Right off the top of my head:

  1. Pick-up a Radeon Pro WX 3200. I want to experiment with MxGPU. The AMD equivalent to NVIDIA's vGPU technology where-in a single physical GPU is able to graphically accelerate multiple virtual machines.
  2. Design and build a prototype USB enabled light that turns on when it gets dark. This is mainly for personal reasons (non-backlit keyboard) but if it peaks anyone else's curiosity that's more motivation for me to get that project rolling.
  3. Switch-out my dual Intel Xeon E5-2670v1 virtualization server for a AMD EPYC 7551P & DDR4 RAM.

...there's definitely more but I can't remember it right now.

Oh boy, I do have quite a list:

  • Tons of ML papers that I want to turn into some silly instagram filters
    • One of those is specially nice since it's an upscaling algorithm, so I want to kinda do my own DLSS
  • DIY HDMI capture card with a FPGA I have lying around
  • DIY UPS system for my modem and router (I have over 30 18650s lying around)
  • DIY RAID controller with a FPGA
  • A GBA emulator for my NDS
  • Touch up my CHIP-8 emulator with some nice debugging tools
  • Get mainstream µClinux running into my NDS
  • Get mainstream Linux running in both my PS3 and Wii
  • DIY lab bench power supply from an old ATX PSU I have lying around (with a nice case)
  • A DLNA player so I can easily stream stuff to my TV
  • DIY ESR meter
  • Port DOOM to my cheapo blue pill
  • Make a dead simple serial monitor (akin to the one found in Arduino's IDE, but without needing the IDE itself)
  • Toy with a genetic algorithm for frame packaging in a CAN bus
  • Find an old Sun Ultra case and build my new setup in there

Along with other not so interesting projects.

FX6300 @ 4.2GHz | Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 R2 | Hyper 212x | 3x 8GB + 1x 4GB @ 1600MHz | Gigabyte 2060 Super | Corsair CX650M | LG 43UK6520PSA
ASUS X550LN | i5 4210u | 12GB

  • Buying new NVidia MXM GPU for Zbook (yes, a laptop, WX4150 sorta worked but isn't providing native fan control)
  • New SSD for Zbook (from 250GB to 500GB)
  • New ODD hard drive caddy for Zbook (another SSD maybe)
  • Replacing parent's desktop monitor for a better one from my room
  • Organising photo data on my external drive
  • Cleaning my desk, brother's desk, and parent's desk.
  • Cleaning the computers, giving them a dusting, including mine.
  • Testing if the WX4150 GPU works in my old MSI GT640 (if it does then great, I might repurpose the MSI as some transcoding server or something)
  • Cable management for parent's desk and my brother's desk

That's kind of all for me.

- Finish my NAS/Plex/Security server build. Need to buy some hard drives and make a cabinet for the garage.

- Install my backup generator electrical so I can backfeed my panel instead of using electrical cords. Also, look into converting the LP gas portion to Natural Gas.

- Build a new desk with integrated pc cases.

I might be interested in that.

Aaah, that's pretty nice then, a much easier selling point if they're into gaming too :D

Yeah, I didn't bother listing my "other" to-do list... that's massive! stuff like clearing the garden, ready for a new shed build, laying a new concrete path, making a new fence/gates etc too.

I've also just completed over the last 2-3 days, re-arranging my desktop, blowing the dust out of the pcs/servers etc, re-arranging my network cabling. Sorting out my spare room that has my computer spare parts on rack shelving. Also my in-the-house tools etc... I have been really busy, and still only hit like 2-5% of my household to-do list, and maybe 5-10% of my computer projects to-do list 🤣

Complete community fibre project (UK openreach) for gigabit internet (from adsl 7/1)

tidy up networking wiring (doesn't sound like a lot but its an enourmous job)

upgrade unifi controller software so I can use new managed switches and aggregate link to NAS

Ram upgrade to plex server (6GB to 16GB)

Figure out why my 1TB nvme drive decided to become 240GB (I used the seagate copy tool to copy my old PC         C drive that had a 240GB sata ssd.

Sounds like it just copied the partition across... IIRC you should just be able to extend volume in disk management, as long as the un-allocated space is towards the end of the drive... which it should be.

I really wish I could get gigabit FTTP, but not likely where I live... I saw some "news" about it the other day, where they reckon it might be 2025-2030 before most of the UK gets gigabit :(

BTW, lucky you... I am glad you're getting upgraded from ADSL speeds.. is that because you couldn't get it before? or just that you didn't want to pay for a better plan?

I'm planning on getting a NAS and some better networking at home. Havn't even begun planning though.

Also most likely getting the new Occulus Rift :)

  • Buy and setup NAS/home server
  • Learn Python (this is also because of school)
  • Setup PostgreSQL database locally, while improving SQL skills
  • Improve home and portable streaming/casting setup (this has some bottlenecks that can't be fixed in a year)

Rebuild my cooling loop. Gonna replace the reservoir with one where the pump is integrated into the rest, so I can use less fittings.

Just gotta order more fittings. Because rotary fittings are a pain in the ass and leak all the damned time.

Rural scotland so theres a bunch of subsidies but I'm in my parents home and my dad works from home and so do most of the people living nearby so it's partly paid for by us and partly by the goverment. Hella expensive tho.

I was reading they need red tape cut for them to save 8billion in infrastucture costs but it sounds like it would be worth it to do so they can speed up rollout.

Sounds like it just copied the partition across... IIRC you should just be able to extend volume in disk management, as long as the un-allocated space is towards the end of the drive... which it should be.

I would have thought so but when I tried to do this last weekend I could not use that setting within windows disc managment. I will retry this weekend to see if I overlooked any aspect of it though.

Yeah, it should be straight forward. If not, make a post in storage forum, and include a screenshot of the disk management, as it might help narrow down the problem. Hope it goes well for you though.

Please quote my post, or put @paddy-stone if you want me to respond to you.
