What would u do if ur school forces u to handover Usernames and Passwords of all ur social media accounts to them?

Shammikit

So recently a famous local school here has posted the following rules shown in the image to all their students. In short its: handover ur social media accounts or stay home. Obviously u would be pressured by ur parents to hand them over or deactivate them because no parent wants their child to be kept home just because of a social media account they have. And during the said parents meetings they would surely outline only the bad things of phones, computers, internet and social media to make all of them look straight out bad and there is zero good in them and most parents will surely take this on top of their heads and ensure their kid doesnt even get near a phone or computer. I have been to a couple of schools during my school times and I know how the so called computer staffs handle things in most places. They are just people with a basic IT certificate who only know how to install windows and how to press the next button during a software installation. So here when they say they will maintain a record of usernames and passwords, what they probably mean is one of these IT staffs will put them all in an excel sheet and keep them in the desktop of their account. God bless the security of the students accounts.

Personally I think all of this is illegal because as I know accounts like these contain personal info. So unless u decide to give access to an external party they cannot forcefully take them unless they come with police with a court order. And all of this is really bullying the students.

If i was still a kid and if i was studying in this school i would put all of my accounts visibility to friends only or only me and tell the school I dont have any accounts. However once the said parents meetings are done my parents like most of them here would have only one thing working in their brains: 'phones, internet and computers = 100% bad'. So i would probably be banned from using any device at home and the internet would be taken out as well.

If u were put in this situation as a teenager, what would u do? And how would your parents react?

sadly in countries like ours these sort of things are given almost no priority. No parent will be bothered to take legal action in the first place and even if one does I doubt if the legal departments will even give 2 hoots about students social media accounts being taken away. The old farts working there will even tell its a gud thing because most old people hate tech and they think it spoils children.

This would be entirely illegal over here and I'm no longer school-age, but -- just in theory -- if this happened here and I had a school-age kid, I would fly off the handle. I would very much tell my kid to never, EVER hand over their credentials, no matter what the school-administration said and I would also instruct the kid to not even tell them about any social-media accounts the kid might have in the first place. No random fucker, no matter who they are, should have access to my kid's credentials.

I would not punish my kid by removing the kid's access to tech or the Internet. I would probably instruct the kid in closing all their social media-accounts and find some way of rewarding the kid if they agree to do it and agrees to stay off social media until this insane overreach was turned over. (It'd also be good parenting to explain why such draconian measures are bad for everyone and why some people still insist on going for them. Don't ever leave a kid to guessing, when it comes to the big questions like this.)

Well, truth to be told, phones and Internet do have a scary side, but requesting username and password is downright invasion of privacy. Would you give your bank account number as well as PIN? Certainly not.

Dummy account is one, but for me, I just said I don't have one, and just don't bring a phone to school. If there's anything, I will bug the principal office to call my parents for pick up or something. Sure it is cumbersome and annoying, but well, better than having some unknown adult checking my Facebook account.

However, come to think of it, what if the teachers could use the username and password to log in the account, only to spot some messages that could hint that one of their students is going to commit suicide? What if the teachers found out that their students has befriend with a shady people or buying drugs? Hmm... If they can use it for the good, does this seems bad and unreasonable? Of course privacy will be an issue, but this could potentially save a kid from committing suicide or doing drugs. Who knows?

Still, well, I don't know. Before I hand my username and password of my social account to them, I would need to make sure that those who handle my social account are accountable, safe, and responsible.

I have ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). More info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autism_spectrum

I apologies if my comments or post offends you in any way, or if my rage got a little too far. I'll try my best to make my post as non-offensive as much as possible.

Big difference.

Considering I literally don't use my real name on social media and mostly just use it to either comment on some webpages (facebook) and somewhat "talk" to randoms on twitter..., I can just say "I don't use social media". They can even look at my phone, there's no social media app on there and no online search will give any result about me when looking for my name.

Anyone who willingly put out their real name and personally identifying information about themselves online, are frankly fools looking to get doxxed, stalked, harassed and more. There's no such thing as privacy online when you're the one putting out that info for all to see.

I might consider making an account with my real name if I'm literally forced to for a position, but you can bet I'll never be posting anything on there unless forced to.

If I was underaged, I'd upload nude pics then hand them over all my accounts and start sharing those nudes and persecute and sue the school for child porn possession and mismanagement of data and "leaked nudes" $$$$$$$$$$$

I would refuse. I would look through Canada's Constitution and the human rights charter. If I was in the US I'd be hitting up the ACLU, I'm not aware of a Canadian version.

This is atrocious. Just because you go to school does not mean you give up your civil liberties, rights and privacy. I hope whoever came up with this idea is fired. There are kids smarter than this

So, if this is actually how you present it, meaning that any pre-existing social media accounts are expected to be handed over? That would be illegal in any modern democracy. In Canada, it would be highly illegal, and the administration forcing it could face jailtime.

If, however, it was an exercise in which student's created new "dummy" social media accounts? That's not necessarily the same thing. I still don't agree with the students handing over their usernames and passwords though. If anything, students should be taught the opposite.

Yea this seems like a dangerous exercise of getting kids used to the idea of handing over their personal and account details to authorities.

I know in Canada authorities cannot compel you to hand over any passwords or anything. If it does, I think all evidence is thrown out taken from that. I forget the exact term, but it's a wrong admission of guilt

I don't know that much about Canadian laws. Our buddy @dalekphalm would know more about this than either of us. But yea I think if they don't have a warrant (if that's possible to even get for social media accounts), they can't use dirty tactics to try to trick, bait, or force you into disclosing it.

Quote

In Canada key disclosure is covered under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms section 11(c) which states "any person charged with an offence has the right not to be compelled to be a witness in proceedings against that person in respect of the offence;"[10] and protects the rights of individuals that are both citizens and non-citizens of Canada as long as they are physically present in Canada.[11]

In a 2010 Quebec Court of Appeal case the court stated that a password compelled from an individual by law enforcement "is inadmissible and that renders the subsequent seizure of the data unreasonable. In short, even had the seizure been preceded by judicial authorization, the law will not allow an order to be joined compelling the respondent to self-incriminate."[12]

In a 2019 Ontario court case (R v. Shergill), the defendant was initially ordered to provide the password to unlock his phone. However, the judge concluded that providing a password would be tantamount to self-incrimination by testifying against oneself. As a result, the defendant was not compelled to provide his password.[13]

copy pasted from the wikipedia page for key disclosure law. Would love to hear from Mr. dalekphalm, assuming he's a lawyer
