Yes, it is, but I was actually just going for the sound difference in the O and A. And you'll want to pronounce the A like in "bra" and not as in "automobile". The "au" combination as in German doesn't really exist in an English word, that's why I was focused on the basic difference between the very first letter. Wikipedia lists "vow" as an acutal word for comparison of the vowel (actually diphthong; double-vowel as a single element).

The "a" in "bra" is pronounced the same as the "ar" in "Park" (which is a word in both German and English).

A better analogy would be the word "out", which translates roughly to "aus" in German. The pronunciation of the first syllable is the same for both.

Thanks for reading all this by the way!

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

There’s some linguistic spelling system that actors amongst others use to describe such things.  I understand it even includes click languages.  It’s probably the most useful tool to describe this.  I’m not familiar with how it works though. I heard about it on a documentary on the making of some Mamet film I think.  Apparently John Hurt studied it.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Could be it.  It’s apparently huge.

The one mentioned I hadn’t heard about until I watched that documentary.  Could be that still.  Aparently it’s wildly sensitive.  They had examples of the same word in the same language spoken by people in the same city and they didn’t even look similar. Apparently it doesn’t exclusively use the Greek alphabet.  Russian and other characters are used as well.

What I think he was going for is the fact that "ow" in English is pronounced like an open-mid back rounded vowel (think "autism" or "automobile", which is not what Audi sounds like), while the German pronunciation of Audi is an open front unrounded vowel (think of the word "bra").

Not exactly on topic, but um... those are supposed to be pronounced differently? I pronounce the "ow" in automobile and bra the same way... but apparently I pronounce quiet a few things weird.

So the beginning of "out" would be the correct way to pronounce Audi, right? I think I've only heard someone pronounce it differently once, and it really threw me off.

Remembered another one I was going to mention before: most profile pics that are gifs are annoying as f*ck and we should have the option to have the gifs show up as just a static picture instead. I often have the forum page pulled up on a second monitor while working or doing something else, and it’s distracting as hell to see a spinning RGB parrot in my peripheral vision, to the point where I have started just opening a new tab and keeping the window on that. There are exceptions ( @wkdpaul ‘s comes to mind), but in general I don’t understand why people would choose a fast looping gif as their profile pic and how other people aren’t annoyed by it.

You can get a firefox extension that does that. I haven't yet found a satisfactory alternative for chrome unfortunately

"Story driven" computer/video games are lackluster and boring.

People that praise stories in games obviously need to read more books, because if they did they would realize how embarrassingly bad stories are in ALL games.

Game play firstly and atmosphere/world secondly is what makes a great game great.

This quote from John Carmack from the 90ies (i think) encapsulate it very well

Quote

Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important.

That is, indeed, an unpopular opinion.

Personally, I grew up in low-contact martial arts (pads, no head hits, etc) and I would never want to compete in MMA, but I respect the effort put in, and I am frequently fascinated by the skill on display.

It may have (often serious) health consequences down the line, but the same could be said for american football, which I find faaaaar less interesting.

American football using their head as an disadvantage.

So many brain injures and some deaths, and how bad practices are used. Like with the some american school trainers, there to fuck you up like the rest of the USA.

Speaking of American football, didn't Congress banned a football Tactic around the early 20th Century, due causing major injuries.

A bunch of them. There are dozens of rules like that.  You may be referring to “spearing” but there are so many it’s hard to tell.  There was a famous early one for example called the flying wedge that used to get a lot of people killed.

Another opinion to add to the list.

The "Treehouse of Horror" episodes of the Simpsons aren't all that great when compared to the rest of the season they are in.

I also don't subscribe to the philosophy of "everything after season X was terrible" - I believe it has been a gradual decline, and everything up to about season 13-17 was perfectly watchable, though most of the absolute classics are of course in seasons 3-9 which are usually described as the prime of the series. Even in the most recent seasons there are some excellent episodes.

They are generally designed to reduce injury.  Before boxing there was bare knuckle boxing, which had an even higher injury rate.  It is limited though.  Olympic boxing is significantly safer than pro boxing because headgear is used.

Flying wedge was old.  Like leather helmet days old. Been illegal for a long time.  The rule about illegal formations was going after the flying wedge though its been used for other things as well.  The flying wedge was so effective it more or less ruined football as well.  It killed a lot of people.  The kickoff would happen and the entire team would link arms in a wedge formation with the ball carrier behind it.  The only way to stop it was to break the wedge.  A lot of people got trampled and killed trying.  The eventual demise came when a college player was sewing suitcase handles to the uniforms of the team.

I have to disagree. I wouldn't say they are all good but games like Portal 2 and Half Life had great stories. Though not every game thats story driven is good. But there are those that are.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
