Do you use the right shift key?

  1. 1. Do you use the right shift key?

    • Use it all the time to type!
    • Use it semi-frequently.
    • Use it rarely / not at all.

So watching today's ShortCircuit video I was struck by the notion of using the right shift key. This isn't the first time I have watched an LTT video where the commentator complained about the smaller size of the right shift key. After thinking about it for a little bit, I was a bit perplexed because I hardly ever use the right shift key at all. I always use the left shift when typing, personally. I think someone could remove the right shift alltogether and I would be no worse for the wear.

I'm curious to know how other's use this. Am I in the extreme minority or are there others like me who never touch the key at all?

It depends. Usually I use left shift, but I have very occasionally used right shift because it was more convenient at that particular moment in time.

I use Firefox at home and Chrome at work. I have a love/hate relationship with this shortcut. I use it wrong at least once a day.

CTRL+Shift+p opens Private Browsing in Firefox, CTRL+Shift+p opens the advanced print dialog on Chrome, and CTRL+Shift+n restores closed windows on Firefox. CTRL+Shift+p is much easier on one hand though. ;)

The right shift key is so invisible to me that I literally stretch my hand across the keyboard to do something like that, didnt dawn on me how crazy that was until I read that.

The way I learned to type (and I pretty sure how it’s supposed to be done) is to use the left shift when capitalizing a letter from your right hand and use the right shift when capitalizing a letter from your left hand. I try to do that as much as possible, but I often end up using left shift anyways.

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I’m wrong.

I do, I have both hands on the home row, no matter what letter I need capital, I will use my left hand to press shift and then press the letter with my right, as long as it is on the right side of the keyboard.

Now and then I use it but not very often.

I use it every day.

I am left handed so I use the arrow keys to move and the right shift key to either sprint or climb.

Every time I have to use Shift Del  (erase, skip recycle bin)  or  Shift+insert (paste when i don't use Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V)

Also Alt+Shift+Enter in total commander to get the size of every folder in the current folder is very useful.

So yeah... i voted semi-frequently.

Personally I occasionally use the Right Shift, but that's quite rare.

It's usually when I am typing something with one hand or when I am doing a certain keyboard shortcut.

I did a poll about this last year and found that about about 73-86% of people (reportedly) exclusively use Left Shift (for all actions; capital letters, special characters and shortcuts).

This was a sample size of 38 people though, so not too many. Plus, it's quite heavily biased towards people who use their keyboard quite often; it doesn't take into account people who use their keyboard a lot less.

Honestly I just never touch the right shift key.

Every time I need to use Shift I just use left shift.

What happens when you break the left shift tho! You need a backup shifter...

Yes, I know people that do use the right shift for this exact reason. They can't buy a new keyboard either so they make do using the right shift.

I use it to capitalize a lot of the letters(&symbols) on the left AND right side of my keyboard.
(Which is what I learned by written this... muscle memory is a strange thing, you think you don't use the thing, but then you start writing and suddenly you've use it like 11 times in a single post.)
