Tempered Glass and Thermals

A simple question with a possibly-not-so-simple answer: Does having glass side panel(s) make things hotter/cooler inside your case than solid metal panels? And does the level of tint affect anything? (This is assuming the case in question isn't in direct sunlight or something, so there wouldn't be greenhouse gas effects occurring, which I'm willing to bet makes the latter a moot point.)

Does not matter what so ever. The material isn't going to make a difference.

Doesn't matter. What you need to look for is airflow through the front and top if you're concerned about overheating.

The side panel for the most part won't affect temps. 

What Matters is the airflow through the case and how chocked up the front panel etc.

Metal has more thermal transfer than glass so technically it might be cooler. But we are talking fractions of a degree. Certainly not anything that would make a difference in any application.

 

Air circulation matters much more.

i thought there were two layers of glass separated by air to prevent the outside from being hot. pretty sure glass is good at conducting heat

With decent enough design they can be *decent*. Not the best, but perfectly fine for most builds with the right fan setup.

Some non-glass side panels have holes for a fan or two. You could drill them in the glass panel if you're concerned.

You're better off just leaving it be and getting a mesh fronted case. The GPU temps aren't as good but you're at a much smaller risk of breaking the glass/acrylic and the GPU temps will be good enough.

You almost certainly could not drill holes into glass easily, and especially not tempered glass any any amount of force will cause it to break due to the tempering process causing the glass to be under high internal stress constantly, like a highschooler who's got three regent tests coming up all on the same day and they havent studied for any of them levels of stress. Any glass that has holes or bends in it was created with those holes pre made.

That's how tempered glass acts.

 

The tint has nothing to do unless the thickness of the glass differs with it (darker=thicker glass). 

 

It makes little difference though, metal cases feel (the amount of heat is the same) hotter because metal is good at heat dissipation. Avoid getting cases with glass/plastic on the front as they have shit air intake.

 

A lot of the times ovens actually have glass sandwich with a layer of an inert gas or vacuum as an insulator. If it was just a pane of glass it would heat up a lot
