Covid-19 hit a psych ward at a South Korean hospital

Quote

The windows are sealed shut in the psychiatric ward at South Korea's Daenam hospital to prevent possible suicide attempts. The patients sleep together on futons in communal rooms.

And when the coronavirus made its way inside earlier this month, the hospital administrators and South Korean health officials faced a choice.

They decided to put the psychiatric ward — and its more than 100 patients — on lockdown in an attempt to contain the virus at the hospital in Cheongdo County, the center of South Korea's outbreak.

Of South Korea's more than 3,150 confirmed cases, 101 were from patients in the psychiatric ward. Seven patients from the ward have died — among a total of 17 around the country. All but two in the psychiatric ward contracted the disease.

Care was mandated by the government, but it’s not clear who has to pay.

Frank Wucinski and his 3-year-old daughter, Annabel, are among the dozens of Americans that the government has flown back to the country from Wuhan, China, and put under quarantine to check for signs of coronavirus.

Now they are among what could become a growing number of families hit with surprise medical bills related to government-mandated actions.

... accepted the U.S. government’s offer to evacuate from Wuhan with Annabel in early February as the new coronavirus spread.... a two-week quarantine at Marine Corps Station Miramar near San Diego. During that time, they had two mandatory stays in an isolation unit at a nearby children’s hospital. The first started upon arrival in the United States, and the second was a few days later, after an official heard Annabel coughing. ...

Both have repeatedly tested negative for the virus.

After their release from quarantine, Mr. Wucinski and his daughter went to stay with his mother in Harrisburg, Pa. That’s where they found a pile of medical bills waiting: $3,918 in charges from hospital doctors, radiologists and an ambulance company.

I'm pretty terrified, tbh.

My mother is 70, hypertension, diabetes.

My father is 71, hypertension, insulin dependent diabetic, end stage kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, has numerous amputations on his lower extremities.

They live the next town over, but I do stop by pretty much every other day. I brought them some supplies and tried to educate them. They're Trumpkins, though, and will pretty much listen to everything Fox News says. That is a challenge.

My son is 8 and has asthma, but i don't know if that increases his risk much since there doesn't seem to be much data showing deaths in children.

My daughter is 6, and doesn't have any real issues except allergies.

My wife is 39, and smoked for about a decade, but otherwise healthy except for migraines.

As for myself, I am 38 and have mild hypertension and diet-controlled diabetes.

This is definitely the disease that has the potential to kill both of my parents and maybe even me. It would be devastating to our family.

Not to defend trumpet (because I really really really don't want to), but most high profile politicians and front people don't read, they don't have time, they are handed notes with tidbits of information priming them for what to expect in the interview/press release etc.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

An interesting graphic from this article.

Although the article is dated Feb 28, 2020, strangely, the authors, all from "Resolve to Save Lives, an initiative of Vital Strategies, working with countries to prevent 100 million deaths and make the world safer from epidemics", are somehow unaware that the numbers being used are not from the study they mention, nor the earlier smaller one, nor the more recent ones in the 900 to 2,000 range, but are from the 72,000+ cases study. They appear to have no knowledge of the studies done in the past three weeks!

Quote

was documented in a single-site review in which 6 out of 138 (4.3 percent) confirmed patients died. In the same study, 36 out of 138 (26 percent) required ICU care. These estimates are based on a small number of patients, and future estimates are likely to be more accurate and generalizable.

For anyone who's followed just about any level of what's going on, the following article is pretty much useless.

https://www.thinkglobalhealth.org/article/how-save-lives-covid-19-pandemic

In short, the article is largely a meaningless, obvious or already underway, bunch of words disguised as wisdom. But the graphic is interesting. As it shows the range, it's not relevant if their irrelevant article got the numbers wrong.

Interesting article in the NYT...

Mostly a bit of history and a LOT of common sense.

But hey, that last quality is gold precious and rate! ?

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/29/opinion/sunday/corona-virus-usa.html

  • Plan and prepare
  • Invest in state health departments
  • Fund federal health agencies
  • Forget isolationism

It's insane that people refuse to believe we live in a global society and what affects one country affects us all.

People here in the states are pointing the finger at China, and while they definitely deserve some criticism, regardless helping them in their crisis helps us all.

OH! Btw have you (all) heard of the US marine ships which have been ordered to quarantine at sea (forbiden to dock in US ports) if there were docked in any port from an infected country in the last 3 week?

What do you think happened? Just in case or something actually happened?

the hospital staff hooked me up to an IV, mostly as a precaution, and used it to administer magnesium and potassium, just to make sure I had plenty of vitamins.

Even I know that Magnesium and potassium are NOT vitamins! ?

But if that's the level of knowledge he's displaying, as a nurse, how much time would you spend

mad2.gif.d9b17618525dc8b9ef1d2ef15cc900f3.gif

trying to explain it to him. lol

Once while staying in hospital, I told the nurse about a bat I saw fly into and out of my room in the middle of the day. From the look she gave me, she thought it was the meds. An hour later, they caught the bat in the hallway. Then she was conflicted: did he or didn't he...

I've heard stories from buddies of mine that all U.S. aircraft carriers that had interacted with Italian, German, and South Korean Navy in the past month were ordered to not port or dock with other ships. They've been told to continue operations as normal, but they heard rumors that some people aboard a couple specific carriers were panicked and had to be put on medical leave temporarily. Considering there is close to a crew of 3,000 on just one of the small carriers, I can see how the larger carriers which host 4,500+ crew may be a little scared. To put into perspective how many servicemen may be affected, the U.S. has more than 15 nuclear powered aircraft carriers.

They have a different level of "required up time".

And it's not their first rodeo. They have the history and procedures. As long as no one has dicked with it or slashed budgets.

Plus the carriers have to have some kind of filtration system in water and air to prevent the spread. They have full hospitals on the big carriers and clinics on the smaller ones. Considering our lovely tax system, I hope they are functioning at full capacity. There should be no excuses to stopping the spread of the virus on an isolated military installation like that.

Well... They have all the water needed to wash their hands regularly and frequently! Not sure the fish will appreciate the soap taste! But you can't make everyone happy!

Different levels of reporting.

Plus, different standards of charting, charting under chaos, disclosure policies, and so on.

See the CSSE leaderboard dashboard for the gathered Confirmed, Deaths and Recovered.
