Technically, models done around two weeks ago by actual researches and their results reviewed, the R0 observed in the numbers from China would - if unchecked - eventually travel through 40% to 60% of the world's population. So it would be easy for someone to redo the model and come out as a face for hire for interviews. We covered this a number of pages back. While researchers found it interesting to play the numbers out so far, they figured it was pointless to calculate so far out until there were good numbers to use. Instead they were focused on identifying transmission, tests, treatments and the usual knowledge required for developing new treatments and vaccines.

“You should ask your children’s schools about their plans for school dismissals or school closures,” Nancy Messonnier, a director at the Centers for Disease Control, said during a press briefing on Tuesday. “Ask about plans for teleschool.”

Messonnier warned at that time that her agency is confident an outbreak will occur in the United States and is now mulling “exactly when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illness.” A few hours later, federal officials, including Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, sought to downplay the urgency of the earlier warning from CDC officials.

Coronavirus spreads into third Canadian province

TORONTO — Public health officials in Quebec announced the province’s first case of the novel coronavirus on Thursday, bringing the total number of cases in Canada to 14.

The affected woman had traveled to Montreal from Iran via Doha, Qatar, and is in self-isolation at home, the province’s health minister, Danielle McCann, told reporters.

Corona Beer, the third most popular brand of beer in the world according to a YouGov ranking, has taken a hit in recent weeks. Google searches for “corona beer virus” spiked a couple weeks ago, jokes have proliferated online and sales have gone down dramatically. Shares of Constellation Brands dove 8 percent this week.

It’s not the first time that a product shared an unfortunate name with a virus. In 1988, the manufacturer of a diet candy called Ayds sought a new name to distance itself from the AIDS virus, its sales having dipped 50 percent because of the association.

A cruise ship turned away from multiple ports over unsubstantiated fears of coronavirus will be allowed to dock in Mexico and its passengers may be allowed to disembark, officials said Thursday.

The MSC Meraviglia has berthed at the Mexican island of Cozumel and is waiting for health officials to board and conduct customary checks, MSC Cruises said in a statement Thursday morning.

On Wednesday, the company expressed dismay that authorities in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands had turned the cruise liner away, saying the ship’s medical records showed only a “single case of common seasonal flu” and that it struck a crew member whose travel history did not include territories hit by coronavirus or subjected to “international health restrictions.”

If proven the virus can be transmitted from human to dog, and from dog to other human and dogs. Oh, I don't know how this epidemic can be contained.

We'd have to stop all of the door-to-door dog salesmen?

IF it turns out to be valid, it would just be another transfer path to address. It's not like there's 500 million dogs going around the streets of the U.S. unrestrained, biting/licking person after person as fast as they can. (Dogs in Thailand, Chilie and a few other places may be somewhat of an issue)

Curious that this report comes out in news after Moscow gets criticized for a stray rat, cat & dog roundup/elimination program they say is to contain coronavirus.

There was a study that was looking at SARS-CoV-2 receptors against future outbreaks being initiated by further zoonotic transmission, and said that among other things, they didn't match that of dogs (and cats?). Will certainly be interesting to hear what this is about.

In places with large outbreaks. Just to lock down towns and cities is already troublesome for the governments. How do you restrict movement of stray dogs and cats? Moreover, if the owners tested positive and required isolation. Do we quarantine the pets as well? For a small scale outbreak like in Hong Kong, it can be done. If you have a large outbreak like in S. Korea. I doubt you will want to spend the resources to test and quarantine all the suspected cases of pet. In less developed countries, it will be even harder to deal with. If further studies confirm human to dog, back to human, transmission is another possible path. I have no idea how we handle this crisis.

I certainly hope this is a false alarm.

Unfortunately most media these days is the same.   Every media article I have ever read on a subject I am educated in has left me shaking my head,  The only thing I can say for the better outlets is that at least they don't cut up the quotes and leave them contextually intact.

That is sooo right... even more so in the US... Just look at the Videos or the articles about that concerning the US

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/27/us/politics/coronavirus-us-whistleblower.html

Quote

Did they learn nothing from Spanish Flu? We need to be on top of this, while the US may have a lower death rate, what about other cournties?

Obviously not, but you know... All you need is one not very bright "leader" of a big country to drastically cut in annual budget funds for Public Health several years in a row, fire specialists and professionals in rapid response plans in case of outbreaks, remove a seat created in the National Security Team "just because", not listen to professional advices because it doesn't fit his narrative and... say publicly that it's not as terrible as the Terrible Flu (with the 0.1% mortality rate), after all Coronavirus only has a 2-3% rate and all you need is to wash your hands regularly until spring.

But hey! It's not as if all that already happened, right? Oh! Wait... ?‍♀️

/s

And why would the US have a "lower death rate"? It's not has if people in the US didn't have to pay a lot for all the health tests, and as if not every and each citizen had access to medicare.

Didn't you read the case of the man we talked earlier in this thread who had to pay a lot ($+3,000) from his pocket for a simple flu testing as his insurance company demanded for proof of "no preexistent condition", because he didn't want to immediately be tested and have a CT Scan for CoVid-19 as it would be way too costly for him... a simple flu test, more than $3,000. If THAT doesn't prevent others to get tested...

So... Maybe the US has a not so bad health system but.. it's only for a minority of the population. What about the rest?

Your assertion here reminded me of the 5 first minutes of the 1st episode of The Newsroom. ?

Quote

The 3rd world? They even stated that a Vaccine might not even happen and if it does it could be up to a year before its ready.

What I read it's that it would take at least a year for it to happen because of the different testing phases... Not that it wouldn't happen.  Many options available.

IMO, the problem with the CDC lies here:

https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/trump-defends-cuts-cdc-budget-federal-government-hire-doctors-coronavirus-2020-2-1028946602

I don't want to be "political", but at some point some actions have some harsh consequences. And right now the whole of the US is confronted with one of these consequences.

There is an entity, the CDC, which has been emptied for several years now from its ressources (specialists, money, infrastructure etc.) and for such an entity to develop response plans, to train professionals, to simply function as it should, it needs money. Just as simple as that.

Yeah I know. I don't want to get political here as well. The US should be leading the fight of this global epidemic. Instead..

California has 33 confirmed cases. With ~8300 people under observation. Many of those 8300 people should be tested. I'm speechless.

When they want to start a war. No one will ask how to fund it. No one will ask about budget deficit.

When it comes to healthcare. No, can't do it, because we have no money.
