I Feel Wrong for Random Things that I Like... Should I?

PlayStation 2

Serious thread, because I've always felt pretty bad for my tastes in, well, everything, from music to cars to just about everything that I like.

I tend to like things no one else does, not in a hipster "I like them because they're unpopular" type of way, but more of a genuine "I dig weird ass things" type of way. For example, I really like the Chrysler PT Cruiser, but everyone else seems to hate it with a burning passion. I dunno, I just kinda feel bad for everything that I like because it seems like no one else does. Should I feel bad for it or should I try to embrace it more?

Check out my guide on how to scan cover art here!

Local asshole and 6th generation console enthusiast.

Lol don't feel bad about it. Embrace it. Whether you see it as a good or bad thing, you'll probably find other people who really love similar things that you do.

I mean fuck I think I'm the only person who frequents this forum who is even interested in vintage keyboards, much less collects and uses them on a daily basis (well, use them every day, not collect them sadly lmao).

I'd say you feel some type of way about that stuff because it is in opposition to what is "socially acceptable". Outside that circle of influence, though, you're likely to find there are dozens (DOZENS!!) of people very similar to yourself. As to whether or not you should feel wrong? It depends. For the vast majority of the stuff, it's just your chocolate to their vanilla. Don't trip, tater chip. It's all gravy.

The PT Cruiser is pretty ugly, though. The HHR, however...

There's nothing wrong with having different tastes in things that others may find odd, it helps to define you as a person and makes you unique. People have a predefined expectation in their mind of what they deem acceptable as being 'normal'. Everyone's definition is different depending upon who you ask.

Nothing wrong with liking different things. A buddy of mine loves PT Cruisers as well. I myself never liked them. But I do like estate vehicles or station wagons as we call them here in the US. I still miss my old Volvo wagon. It literally rusted apart.

Many people like different things. It’s life.

withiut choice how can we have passion. Not everyone wants to be a lawyer. Some so. Not everyone wants to be a doctor. Some do. Not everyone collects VHS tapes. Some do.

without all these interests, we just can’t have these things. Appreciate who you are - everyone else does xx

If the things you like aren't hurting people, then you shouldn't feel wrong or bad about them.

In terms of cars, different people have different tastes. I suggest you watch this...

Personally I like a lot of cars made under The Austin Motor Company/Morris Motors>BMC>BLMC>ARG>Rover Group>MG Rover Group along with cars made under the Rootes Group and some old Citroen's. I'm not ashamed of that either.

Shit, nice. I have the mentality that the only way a Volvo should die is saving someone's life, but rust is a bitch.

Hopefully you enjoyed it while it lasted.

You should take a look at some of the weirdness of Doug Demuro. The guy kept a Nissan Cube next to a Ferrari some time ago.

I remember riding my bike to a friends house and his mom drove me back with my bike in the back. When she put it in the handlebar just popped a clean hole right in the headliner.

Really, the front of it looks okay, but the back end is just a mistake.

Yeah, he didn't actually like it either, with it's weird ripple headliner.

But everyone else in here is wrong. If you like kicking bags of puppies and murdering children, you should probably stop that.

Its not wrong to like the PT cruisers design. Thats all just subjective.

But it is wrong to like the PT cruiser just in general. Like a typical early 2000s Chrysler car they are horrible mechanically, their transmissions are made from plywood, bubblegum, and Juergen Schrempp's desperation to keep his marriage made in hell together.

Sure it has got its fair share of issues but at the end of the day it's a car. If it can get you from A-B with minimal fuss, then it's doing its job. Some people like to live with the hardship because they get a buzz from it.

I have a very simple philosophy on things...  if it brings you joy/pleasure and isn't harming anyone else in any way... Then 'fuck' what anyone else thinks... if you like my little pony, the watch the crap out of it... if you like dressing up in a furry outfit and running around the woods with other like minded individuals... have at it. If you like shitty cars, own one and love every minute of it.

Any one who tries to tell you that you cannot, or should not like things that you do... tell them to go fuck themselves... or turn the tables on them and start picking out things they like and telling them how terrible it is to like that... assholes hate being called out for being assholes.

My mum and my late dad liked the PT cruiser... I hate it... but not because it's ugly... because it's badly built, unreliable and rusts. If my dad had gotten one, I wouldn't have tried to stop him... I'd have tried to steer him towards something more reliable though.

I'd love a quirky old car from when I was growing up... either a car my dad had when I was a kid or my first ever car... that car was really old when I got it... and few exist any more and those that do are almost as costly as a brand new car... But If I had the money to burn.  I'd own a 1983 Vauxhall Cavalier fastback (but the SRI version rather than the basic one I could afford).

So get one... and deal with the consequences of ownership... IE a lot of expensive bills.  :)
