[EOL] PSU Tier List rev. 14.8

Message added by Spotty

For help choosing a power supply please Create a New Thread asking for assistance including your budget and system hardware to receive the best answers relevant to your specific needs.

So I just found this list, and then found my PSU of almost 5 years on the "Unsafe at any speed" Tier E.

Obviously, this is distressing, but I've had trouble tracking down any data or explanations why the Lepa MaxBron B100M 1000W PSU is potentially dangerous. Can anyone please enlighten me? This thing has worked without complaint or hitch for years, but if I'm sitting on a timebomb, I'd like to understand why.

Apologies if this should be its own thread.

Salt SYSTEMs:

SYSTEM-Infinity+1(Centerpiece) -- Ryzen 5600X + RX 6800 XT + Galahad 360 + 32GB + Thermaltake P3

SYSTEM-Embrace (Portable) --Ryzen 5600 + RX 5700 XT + Galahad 240 + 16GB + Hyte Revolt 3

well... the undervoltage protection seems to be completely non-functional, considering it dropped to a staggering 6 volts on the 12v rail, with the Chroma connected to it indicating around 100a, and they stopped the test

below is a google translate version of the German review this came from (@hardwareluxx)

Quote

According to LEPA, protective circuits against overvoltage, overload and short circuit are on board, which can be described as sufficient. Our 40A load at 5 volts switches off the power supply, at 3.3 volts, on the other hand, despite the undervoltage of 4.5V, there is no switch-off after several seconds even at 40 amps. Things look similar on 12 volts. Ultimately, we were able to bring our Chroma up to 100 amps without the LEPA switching off. Since the voltage then dropped to 6 volts, we can definitely confirm the lack of undervoltage protection and also an OCP overload circuit. It would have been interesting whether or rather when smoke signals would have been seen, but in the interests of our equipment we did without them. However, since the ripple noise voltage values go through the roof beyond 60 amps, a system crash should also be seen as an overload warning. Ultimately, the LEPA MaxBron 700W is at a level that is inadequate for a branded power supply with regard to its protective circuits. Conclusion: As long as you use it in the normal operating range, the LEPA MaxBron 700W should work well. We would recommend avoiding overload or short circuit situations.

That's as humorous as it is discouraging. Yikes. Undervolt protection is kind of important on any sort of power supply

Thanks for clarifying. I wish the original review wasn't entirely in German.

Hey @LukeSavenije. I have a list of PSUs I'm interested in:

- Seasonic Core GM 650W $95

- Corsair TX650M $102
- Corsair TX750M $112
- Corsair RM650 $115

- Corsair RM750 $120

- Super Flower Leadex 650W $122

- Thermaltake Toughpower GF1 650W ARGB $113

- Corsair RM650X $122

- XPG CORE REACTOR 650W $120

All prices include shipping as well. Which one do you think is the best pick considering quality/price? According to the tier list, the Thermaltake Toughpower GF1 ARGB is Tier A Gold, but it's the 850W version, so I guess they might differ? Thanks.

Corsair who?

Like, you contacted someone in the Fremont office or is it some reseller or contractor?

I talked with Corsair customer support. They informed me the AX850 is end of life and no longer made. Those were the exact words. I was enquiring because i couldn't find the AX850 on their site anymore and was curious what they would replace my PSU with.

Wait, AX850 Gold or Titanium, since the Gold release way back in 2010 and has been discontinued for a while. the Titanium should still be in production.

AX850 Titanium I was told it was end of life and no longer made. I am disappointed, I suspect I am getting a store credit, so not sure what PSU I should be getting now. I don;t see may Titanium class available in the 850W range.

So you're in the U.S.?

If the PSU was DOA, why wouldn't you just return it to wherever you bought it from?

I am in Canada, bought it from Memory Express, but unfortunately i picked it up in Dec when I was putting together parts for my build, first build so I was naive to the parts shortage and it took till last week to get the CPU in. So the return to store date was passed and I did not buy the instore replacement gouge tax. Not that would have helped as it out of stock anyway.

My fault. I already have a thread made where I quoted you, but I don't think you noticed it. I made the post here to see Luke's take as well, but didn't notice that rule.

Blue - quiet operation under moderate load (see details in the spreadsheet)

See spreadsheet for changelog, methodology, detailed description of colors, sources, notes on grayed-out units including issues like GPU incompatibility or quality and performance issues, and other additional info.

Protections

Voltages

  Reveal hidden contents

12V rail

The most important rail in current PSUs, mostly used by the power hungry parts like the GPU and CPU, but also part of the motherboard and part of the molex connector.

5V rail

An important, but much less used rail, mostly used by storage and part of the GPU.

3.3V rail

A rail that gets less and less relevant, it provides power to the RAM (though this can be 12v as well these days), chipset and M.2 drives

Single- and Multirail

  Reveal hidden contents

Single rail

A single rail lets all the current of a voltage, in this case 12v go over a single trace or “rail” (see them as breakers in your house). This has the advantage of turning off less quickly, but does mean it allows full current to go through a single wire or connector, potentially melting or burning it before shutting down

Multi rail

Multi rail these days aren’t physical rails, rather they have multiple points where they measure the current (generally 2-8). it can shut down the psu earlier to protect itself, with a lower chance of burning through connectors and/or cables with a catastrophic failure.

Regulations and Topologies

Digital parts

  Reveal hidden contents

Digital Monitoring

Monitors current and reports it to software like NZXT CAM or Corsair iCue, generally using the OCP rail to measure.

Digital Circuit

Analog and digital circuits at the end have one goal: transmit data and process information into other forms(sound, light, etc). Digital circuits function on two fixed signal levels, 1s and 0s(binary). This allows for better control of switching frequencies under different loads and can achieve really high efficiency, but is also much more expensive to implement

Specifications

  Reveal hidden contents

ATX specification

A certification maintained by Intel that sets baselines for PSUs to meet.

c6/c7 crossloads

c6/c7 sleep states or “Haswell ready” connects to a sleep state used on Intel processors of 4th gen or newer. AMD has these sleep states too, but doesn’t specifically name them. most importantly it has to meet a crossload performance and that it has to be keepable to do a zero-load-power, that most group regulated units can’t meet, it’s highly recommended you pick something up for modern systems that meets this.

Ripple

Ripple is mostly the noise in DC not filtered out from the AC current. A high ripple can shorten part’s lifespan. Intel allows up to 120mV, but we prefer to keep it below 50.

Inrush current limiting

An inrush current limiter tries to limit inrush current, the instantaneous current electronic devices draw when turned on. This is normally done with a so called NTC Thermistor.

You know...you could just use the spreadsheet, which is updated way more often as more info and reviews are put out. You would know that the Legion Gold HX is already on there and is Tier B low priority. It's low priority since there are no professional reviews on it currently
