The annual Group of Twenty, AKA the "G20", meeting of governments and heads of banks around the world has just wrapped up in Japan, and one of the announcements to come from US president Trump during discussions at the meeting is that he's agreed to allow US companies to continue selling their tech to Huawei.

Barely a month after the U.S. government placed a ban on companies doing business with Huawei due to an unspecified national security threat, President Donald Trump has seemingly softened his hard stance. In a press conference at the G20 Conference Saturday, he announced that “American companies will continue” to do business with the beleaguered telecom giant.

 

While it’s unclear whether that extends to the 5G network technology that Huawei is developing, it most certainly applies to Google and Android. Under the terms of the previous ban, Google was barred from selling an Android license to Huawei, meaning its phones could use the base open-source code, but would not have access to the all-important Play Store and Google apps.

 

While Trump didn’t specifically mention Google, Qualcomm, or Intel in the announcement, he made a point of calling out the “complex and highly scientific” products created by U.S. tech companies: “What we’ve done in Silicon Valley is incredible and nobody has been able to compete with it, and I’ve agreed to allow them to continue to sell that product (to Huawei).”

 

While the ban hadn’t technically taken effect due to a 90-day reprieve, it was already affecting the development of future products. Huawei had confirmed that it was working on its own OS and was reportedly reaching out to other China brands such as Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi as partners. Now that Google can continue to sell its Android license to Huawei, the company will need to decide whether to continue pursuing the project or stick with its EMUI OS.

 

One thing that isn’t changing, however, is Huawei’s ability to sell its phones in the United States. However, Trump didn’t close the door on that possibility either, saying the two countries “will have to save that to the very end” of their negotiations over tariffs.


I hope things work out for Huawei regarding their phones, but I'm still going to be waiting to see if this actually plays out as it's being reported. Is it a secured commitment from Trump or is there a chance Trump will flip on his position again? Is all the stigma against Huawei phones simply going to disappear, and is business going to carry on like nothing happened? Is Huawei going to continue to develop and maybe still release its own OS in the future?

 

Yesterday, Huawei claimed, "if we don’t load Google’s system, Google will lose 700-800 million users in the future". That would be a lot fewer people for Google to sell the personal data of and for the US government to spy on.

 

It has been reported that US companies would lose huge potential profits if the ban on Huawei went forward. I expect there also would be a huge risk to US patents and unique technology if Huawei wasn't allowed to use them and so created its own versions of them. It has also been reported that California technology giant Apple could suffer tremendously if China decided to restrict Apple's access to China in response to the US' ban of Huawei. There also have been reports that China is looking into restricting its exports of rare earth minerals to the US and for use in US technology if the US bans Chinese technology in the US.

Can we please not turn this into another one of your conspiracy-oriented threads?  The second-to-last paragraph was pretty arbitrary.

 

It's good news for Huawei, and potentially good news for Google, so long as Trump follows through and doesn't have an over-broad definition of what constitutes a national security problem.  Someone's P30 Pro isn't going to hack the power grid.

So it looks like its pretty much just Huawei being able to assemble their phones, with ARM and Android etc. I don't think the Huawei 5G is included, without stringent tests to prove no security risks.

I would have to disagree. This legitimized some of the bad rumors around the company and highlighted the illegal practices they have been doing for awhile. Not a huge fan of trump but I dont think this is the thing that is tarnishing his administration. Anyone who liked him or disliked him likely haven't changed their mind with this move.

I would rather argue that it caused damage to the US's reputation. They, without hesitation, banned huawei from interacting with US firms and have shown not only Huawei but the world that they are open to using such tactics. In the long run, this will probably be seen as the beginning of the end of America as the biggest economy as from now on firms will look to distance themselves from US firms. Obviously this will not happen in the next couple years, or in the next five years, but nevertheless it will happen.

Not really anything for people to like Huawei or not, but a companies reputation will limit their opportunities in the tech space. Some companies might not want to risk doing business with them etc.

The US taking a stand against a company that has been illegally copying others peoples products is not going to degrade their reputation. If their reputation was degraded then companies wouldn't follow the mandates. The simple fact is that the US is one of the biggest markets in the world and no sane company would distance themsleves from such an important market. I mean in what practical way would companies distance themselves without going against their best interest? I honestly cant think of one.

It's also a two way street/situation, which is why this is very much a standoff with no one actually willing to shoot.

Actually it has, whatever the in US opinion of Trump he's pretty much seen in a negetive fashion. What the US government says doesn't mean a lot to the citizens of most other countries. But things the US does that hurt their day to day lives. That matters and they're not pleased with the US here.

Yeah, there are definitely areas where you can question the US' grudge against Huawei (accusing it of spying while never providing public proof), but IP theft isn't one of them.  The whole T-Mobile incident is evidence enough!

Likely, both the US' and China's reputations have been damaged by these policies. Certainly within the US and maybe places like the UK, which has also taken a hard-line against Huawei, the prejudices fostered by fear-mongering propaganda aren't simply going to reverse with the snap of a finger. I see on Facebook in articles promoting Huawei people telling others to not buy Huawei and to stop selling their stuff, seemingly unaware that the US tech they're purchasing is, if anything, more compromised than what they might buy from Huawei.

 

And perception of reliability in the US has been diminishing for some time over other issues, with many countries having stopped using the US dollar in their international trade as a result - which is a major issue for stability of the US' currency. As you can hear it said by the US government here, concerning a proposal to ban crypto-currencies, a huge amount of the US' power (and wealth) comes from the US dollar being the currency of international trade and reserve currency of other countries.

 

Preventing countries from stopping their usage of the US dollar in foreign trade (like oil purchases, hence the term petro-dollar) is actually a major part of why the US invades so many countries. Iraq, Syria, Libya all have something in common, which is that they dropped the US dollar shortly before being targeted by the US for military action. Venezuela and Iran have dropped the US dollar, and they're also being targeted. And Pakistan dropped the US dollar in its trade with China in 2018, and just one month later the US government placed Pakistan on a watch list that moves Pakistan closer to having further action taken against it by the US.

 

Restraining other countries' ability to compete and surge ahead is a primary motivation behind a lot of US sanctions, tariffs, and rhetoric in recent years. The bans on Huawei are a part of that, and I think they wouldn't be walked back from if China didn't have so much salvo it could fire in response.
