Discord Purge Has Begun

So from what I've been hearing Discord has executed Order 66 and thousands of accounts and servers are being banned, anyone have some more information on this? i.e. Like why so many accounts are being banned, if the discord admins have commented on it, ect.

If it's true it'd probably just be inactive accounts having their name and numbers refreshed so discord can clear anything being unused...

I can't help but feel like Discord are doing it for the same reason YouTube was..

AFAIK Discord is used by some paedophiles as well as being used for things like underage dating servers and other criminal activity, so it wouldn't surprise me if that's the root cause of all of this.

Aren't every voice chat i.e TS/Skype/Discord used for shady shit like underage dating etc? How can you catch them unless you record conversations directly.

Probably. I've never been a part of anything shady so I wouldn't have much proof to back what I say up but AFAIK shady shit was also done in some text chats, and that's where Discord can get them.

I also think Discord's Trust and Safety team may be abusing their powers.. If the whole quackity situation is anything to go by I wouldn't really trust them that much.

nah that's just a myth people like to tell on the internet because MSM began to spread it, like when they said pedos use fortnite to send over cp and terrorists train themselves using counter-strike

 

you need a phone number in order to use the program so it's not like you can use it for "shady stuff" when the account is tied to your real name, address, mac and ip, id number, etc

not to mention every single of your messages goes unencrypted and is logged on their servers and their ToS mention they can access those messagees whenever they want for a variety of purposes

I'm not going to derail this thread, but none of your examples validate your point lol.

 

Needing details to use it does not prevent anyone abusing it. All of what you said can be circumvented. 

Logging also isn't something which would prevent it... If anything, it explains why so much stuff is being 'purged'. People doing shady stuff aren't necessarily the brightest bunch are they... And even then, circumventing the profiling of the user, would lessen the worry of logging.... 

 

So no, personally I don't think it is just a myth, having seen examples out there myself.

Unless you pay for Discord Nitro there is no address entered, you never need a real name to sign up and even IF you did need to enter a name you can easily lie, it's not like they require a license or anything to sign up. MAC address is link local between two endpoints on a network, it does not go beyond that so that's never logged unless you're directly connected to their servers physically, and you can hide/spoof an IP in about 10 seconds.

yeah but if you already know how to spoof your IP and MAC you wouldn't be using discord, you'd use an end-to-end encrypted program with no remote or local storage of the messages

for me at least it would be plain dumb to use it when you already know what they do with your data

Like, I know several people on Discord who run servers with shit posting and nsfw and nsfl channel with some really fucked up shit posted, and so the 2-3 server owners who had channel like this purged them so there server doesn't get taken down. Some of the regulars on the servers who post the fucked up shit also got banned.

This is more likely in regards to the recent Unicorn Riot leaks rather than porn sharing.. Discord does not want political dissidents to organize on their platform. Keep in mind they are venture capital funded and operate at a loss -- this kind of thing being in the news cycle can break their business.

Don't forget: correlation attacks are a bitch. Below is an excerpt from the FBI complaint against a member of Lizard Squad. They had checked for connections to a particular twitter account, and then worked backwards until they found a particular Comcast account that just so happened to be connecting to a vpn service at the same time that twitter account was being used. This is the same strategy used to nail down Tor users. If you live in a five-eyes country you should not assume that whatever you learned about proxies back in 2005 still holds true.

That is true, but so was/is IIRC used for the same thing. to me what youtube did and other social media sights are like killing a fly with a sludge hammer.
