Linux OS: How good is it compared to 5 years ago?

The title says it all, how good has Linux become in the last 5 years. Visually, user-friendly, gaming, program compatibility, etc.

What should I be looking at and what should I be staying away from?

 

I've only used Windows and Mac OS. I haven't dived into the penguin realm yet. Just tell me, how stable is it?

Depends on what distro you install and what you install it on.

It depends on which distribution you get. Some are more use-friendly than others. But for the most part the ones I've used have remained fairly consistent.

 

Application availability depends, but I feel like more and more productivity apps are getting ported over. Otherwise, there's likely an equally good substitute on Linux, you can use some compatibility layer like WINE, or worst-case scenario: run it in a Windows VM (some VM managers have PCI Express pass through so you can run the GPU in there)

 

As far as reliability goes, the core of Linux is stable. It's just the things around it that can be sketchy.

I wasn't in Linux 5 full years ago but from what I have heard from others it has improved greatly. Many videos games from steam can run on it now. Late to the game my experiences with both desktop & server variants have been quite well. Very stable. Fast. Visually appealing. Packed with features. Many many distros still 100% free.

I used Linux Mint on my laptop for about 6 months last year. Wanted to test it out.

 

It was buggy garbage. Finding functioning drivers was a struggle, Google Cloud printing just plain didn't work, making partitions was impossible, and the OS itself didn't let me install programs where I wanted to but rather placed them in pre-chosen places, and programs that worked fine on Windows 10 such as OpenOffice had whole new bugs on Linux. 

 

Eventually, an update completely screwed up the OS and rendered the laptop unbootable unless I used a previous version of the OS, preventing me from getting further updates.

 

I'm not a computer wizard by any means, but I'm competent enough to be able to build and maintain my own computers, and to even be something of an unofficial IT guy at my previous work. I shudder to think what a torture Linux Mint would've been to a less knowledgeable user. 

 

EDIT: Also, with Win10 costing like $5 on ebay, I don't see why anyone who doesn't need Linux for coding or servers or some specialized task like that would ever willingly opt for Linux.

very much depends on which distro you want.

 

ubuntu and mint are generally user friendly

arch and gentoo generally not.

Gaming has improved a ton. Stuff like manerjo exists. Also depending on the flavor you don't ever have to use the terminal

5 years ago Ubuntu did not have systemd, I'm still not really used to it, but I guess, it's better having systemd.

In the server space, i didn't really notice the difference with Centos 5 to 7 (10 years span).

Each distro has its pros and cons and your experience mostly depends on the drivers of your hardware.

Figure out if you have substitutes or if the apps you use are compatible with some distro of Linux. Otherwise you're not going to like it.

 

Otherwise if you want a "I want the OS to be as easy as possible", I've stuck with Lubuntu. I've tried Linux Mint which was alright. And I've seen, but not tried, Elementary OS (despite that it looks like it has a paywall, you don't have to actually pay). Though all three are based off of Debian.

Linux 101, avoid any software's whose version isnt a whole number. E.g. version 0.7, 0.8, 0.9. I hate these software's. Most are unstable and so full of bugs. Don't use these unless you absolutely have to. Get at least version 1.xx and above.

Actually, is there a distro that's visually customizable? I would like it if I can change the icons, cursors, themes, and colors. Something similar to Rainmeter for example.

I started using Linux Mint in 2014, with version 17.  I'm now using 18.3, and when it's time to shift again I'll probably head to Manjaro.

 

I did briefly try Mint 19.1, and it just didn't work right for me.  I don't know if I screwed something up or what, but lawd a lot of things didn't work right so I pulled back to 18.3.

 

I haven't really had many issues with system stability.  I have seen Cinnamon occasionally restart, usually because I did something stupid.  I've never actually crashed the OS, I've never seen a kernel panic.

 

There are a couple silly little issues.  Sometimes my laptop will suspend when the lid is shut, then it'll wake itself back up four seconds later.  A couple times I took the machine out of my bag after a long trip only to find it MIGHTY hot.  If I'm going very far, I just shut it down now, it takes about 13 seconds to boot.  I've seen much worse quirks out of WIndows machines.

 

Windows boxen tend to slow down as they age, and I haven't seen that out of a Linux system.

Stick with something fairly close to Ubuntu and go with whatever desktop environment you like.  Since they're all built from Ubuntu, you'll find they have more similarities than differences, particularly in available software.

 

Speaking of available software, this forum post is brought to you by APT I personally haven't had much of a problem with gaming, though my tastes just happen to have aligned with the availability of Linux-ready titles.  There are several rants here that I will omit, suffice it to say my beloved indie games like FTL: Faster Than Light, Kerbal Space Program, Antichamber and Undertale run perfectly in Linux in my experience.  There are others on this forum who'll insist I'm insane...As an aside, have you ever seen a toddler addicted to those surprise egg videos on Youtube, and tried to take their tablet away, and they just SCREAM?  Some of the folks here remind me of that when talking about gaming on Linux; they can't get Call of Halo, Assassin's Redemption 2: Revisionism running on their first try and oh they'll put even MY bitching to shame.  If I were a betting man, I'd put money down that your experience would be somewhere in between my experience and theirs.  I'll also note that due to the nature of Wine and DOSbox, it may be actually easier to run retro games on a Linux machine than modern Windows. 

 

Watching movies is straightforward. Amazon Prime Video, Netflix etc. pretty much all work in Chrome.  NOT Chromium, Chrome.  You need the Google extensions, but it will install and run.  VLC will also happily play DVD movies, assuming you're a Victorian luddite like me who still owns a functioning optical drive.  By the way, use VLC.  Doesn't matter what OS you run, VLC is excellent.

 

Graphic design on Linux is a total diaper fire.  No Adobe products.  Instead of Photoshop, you've got GIMP.  GIMP, to its credit, is capable of accomplishing basically everything Photoshop can, but the UI is nigh incomprehensible.  I use GIMP at work to prepare raster images for laser etching; for this I need the rescale, zealous crop, desaturate and remove alpha channel functions.  Any time I try to get basically anything else done with it, I end up needing to get drunk.  Inkscape is a little less stupid, it's your Illustrator replacement.  I have actually gotten things done in Inkscape, but it always involves googling.  In deference to wasab, I think Inkscape is at Version 0.92 right now.  Doesn't help that I'm more of a CAD guy, and those silly artists seem to think that lines are supposed to have width. ?  Krita is a straight-up drawing program.  I'm not good at straight-up drawing, so I have no opinion, but I have actually seen some people who are good at straight-up drawing enjoy Krita.  All three of the above packages are available on Windows, so maybe try them before you trap yourself with them.  Note:  My personal favorite image manipulation tool is a terminal utility called Imagemagick.  Yes, I photoshop in the command line.  It's too late for me, now.

That, we can HANDLE.  All of your common desktop environments are going to be very customizable.  gnome-look.org is a good place to start, the themes, icon packs, desktop wallpapers etc. all number in the hundreds or thousands.  Google "ricing linux" if you feel like falling down a particularly deep rabbit hole.

If you're looking for something customizable, Plasma KDE is the way to go. It is, by far, the most customizable desktop environment I've ever used, and I still use it.

Linux is the best it's ever been right now. KDE Plasma and Steam's Proton are by far the most significant advancements in Linux in a while.

 

KDE Plasma's desktop environment is downright sexy. Aside from the default cursor speed, I absolutely love and adore the look and feel. If you're looking for a beautiful DE, KDE Plasma is hands-down the way to go. I cannot recommend it enough!

 

As for gaming, Steam has recently released Proton, which is built-in to the Linux version of Steam and supports running previously Windows-only titles such as The Witcher 3 and more! It's the real deal and seems to genuinely work. They're also constantly updating it with improvements and compatibility fixes. There's also DXVK which I haven't looked into myself but see and hear great things about.

 

So overall, I highly recommend giving Linux a try. As for distributions I'd recommend (in your case): Ubuntu, Debian Buster and Manjaro.

I have swapped full time to Linux on my main PC and it has been great but not problem free. I have gotten to a point where games run great using Lutris and native stuff, normal web browsing feels much better and the general desktop experience i would say is better than anything else i have used for an extender period of time. I have a coupple annoyances like the screenshot tool being garbage compared to snip in windows but compared to my Mint experience a few years ago when no games ran besides natives its gotten a lot better, even compared to four months ago when i tried to experiment a bit with playing on Linux and found that not much worked and then finding everything i play worked pretty much now :D

 

this is probably incomprehensible as i am tired as hell but Linux has gotten really good, just dont own three screens and an NVIDIA GPU, thats my main source of problems atm with graphical artifacts on my third screen :/

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

I ALMOST FORGOT! My laptop is a Samsung Notebook 9 Pro and has a touch screen and it comes with a Samsung stylus. Will this make my touch screen or stylus run into problems?

As far as my experience with Linux, been using it for around 15 years, and as my main OS for about 10 and I work with Linux. 

 

It's gotten better over the last 5 years as far as drivers go.   Most larger companies all produce Linux drivers.    Ease of use is about the same for various distros.  Ubuntu and Mint are both new user friendly.   Not too sure on gaming since I dual boot for that. 

 

I'd suggest buying a small SSD and installing Linux on that and testing the waters so to speak.  

 

Yes, you might have to open a... text editor every once in a while but it's just a different OS than Windows is.   With something different there's always a learning curve.   Most people grow up on Windows and don't want to learn a new OS all over again, and that's ok.  But don't blame having to learn a new OS on the OS.

1) THERE IS NO LINUX OS!

There is OpenSuSe Leap and Tumbleweed, Ubuntu, Gentoo, Manjaro, Debian and a ton other I forgot.

 

2) depends on what you want to do. But it seems always a bit behind and there seems to be other bullshit that has nothing to do with the product going on.

 

3) How stable depends on the Driver and Update Routines.

A Rolling Release might sometimes kill itself, the "normal releases" usually don't.

But there's also the Graphics driver wich can also kill your shit...

 


In the end: Just try it.

I recommend either Ubuntu, Mint or OpenSuSe.

Although it has been about 3-4 years since I last tried Linux Mint my experience was pretty much the same. It was a complete dumpster fire to get any drivers to work properly. Let alone to install anything and get anything outside of a few basic games working. Now I'm giving Windows 10 one final chance with Pro. So far so good but if it starts to irk me the wrong way I'm probably just going to give ubuntu a shot and avoid Mint like the plague.

Not very. Running Linux for a desktop is far from great. You're better off looking at a Unix distro like TrueOS.
