This hack, called ‘Freebird,’ is an application that gives owners of modded Switch units the ability to change the GPU clock speeds on the fly. This has made for some interesting results when it comes to playing in handheld mode, as under normal circumstances most games tend to downgrade their graphical fidelity to compensate for the reduction in available processing power. With overclocking enabled, these negative effects are mostly nullified. Some games which had stuttering issues also run a lot better.

Might be useful in docked mode but I would imagine the thing is already hot enough and battery life would be destroyed in hand held mode

I've read a bit on this and a few developers are saying that overclocking the GPU causes HUGE increases in heat output, whereas overclocking the CPU is not even a measurable difference.

One developer who overclocked both without any thermal management (as he was using Linux) had his battery bulge.

 

So I'd be rather wary as I highly suspect Nintendo chose these clocks to protect the battery both from power and heat damage.

Switch doesn't really get hot. The reduced clock speed was on purpose because Nintendo wanted the battery to last longer. The chip itself is designed to run much higher as its essentially just a Tegra X1.

What's funny is how many people are under the illusion that the dock somehow improves cooling, it doesn't.

 

The dock has no active cooling (heck it doesn't even have passive cooling) so running your Switch at docked speeds in handheld mode is no worse for the console than running it at docked speeds while in the dock. In fact you could argue that surrounding the console in plastic is worse for cooling.

 

Nintendo dropped speeds in handheld mode to save battery, not for cooling reasons.

Yeah I am not sure why that isn't super obvious. Running it at ducked speeds while in hand held mode would burn through the batter like pretty fast. Who know maybe the battery wouldn't even be able to produce the power required to run at those speeds. Also of gaming laptops need to be plugged to use the dedicated gpu because it needs better power delivery.

The common concern amongst people who know what they're talking about is that the additional heat from the LCD being on could negatively impact thermals. The implementation for overclocking actually requires the official charger to be plugged in due to increased power draw.
