My wife and I love pits too! If you've skimmed through this thread, you've probably seen many pics of our Olivia. She's 2.5 now, black brindle and is now my wife's service dog. She goes everywhere with us and is changing people's minds about pits one person at a time showing how calm, focused and friendly she is.

 

Where we live pits are "banned" but it's a joke because so many people here have pits and pit mixes, and no one really cares, lol.

I'd rented a Canon C500 Mark II for a long weekend.  During said, I decided to goof off a bit with it and set it up in my kitchen; you can see the edge of my kitchen table in the lower left corner of its recording.  Whoops.  The second camera angle is my iPhone 11 Pro, but I really should have positioned that in a better spot.  Perhaps on the counter next to the fridge instead.

 

The massive PITA was trying to color match the output.  The iPhone's default video just POPS too much; it's way over-saturated and punchy.  The Canon's is far more natural looking, because: duh, it's a better camera with a much nicer sensor, AND can deliver RAW video.  So the work involved was trying to make it look as "fake" and punchy as the iPhone's.  I think I mostly succeeded, but it's still not 100%.

 

Anyway, enjoy me goofing off with my pups.  They keep this ol' man young.

Ah goddamnit. As soon as it's remotely warm outside the Ticks come out again and of course Jaba has already got one on her forehead above the right eye brow (You can see the tick on my last post here). She absolutely hates it when you have to do anything on her (e.g taking out the ticks or even just cuting her hair back behind the ears).

As I was driving home from running driving and waddling errands today, I saw a woman walking two small dogs (or was it the other way around?). She had each dog fastened to a short leash and each short leash was fastened to a longer leash. The dog on the left was trying to go to the left, the dog on the right was trying to go to the right, and the woman was almost being dragged along. It totally cracked me up. I wished I had had time to snap a picture.

Ticks are terrible and can carry so many bad things (like lyme). We already started Olivia on her tick treatment a few weeks ago when it started to get warm. She got 2 last year, but we found them on her within a few hours and were easy to get off with a tick removal tool.

It's almost not worth the hassle of waiting till "it gets warm".  Just keep them protected year around, even in the cold of Canuckistan.  I keep Seresto collars on my two knuckleheads all year 'round.  New collars in June and December.

I've lately been using the Bravecto flea and tick tablets for Dink, she only has to have one every 3 months, and they kill the fleas/ticks/mites when bitten... apparently this stuff resides in the skin, so no nastiness in their blood IIRC. I've been buying from an online pet meds store to keep costs down a little as our vets want £38 or more for 1 tablet, I kid you not. The pet meds place are almost 50% cheaper, so get a prescription from your vet (ours costs £11), that lasts say 6 months, but can be longer depending on vets.. so even with £11 going to the vets, the meds themselves cost £18 per tablet, and then next day delivery for around £6, still works out to just 11+36+6=£53 for 6 months treatment, compared to £76 from the vets. I don't feel bad about the vets getting less money, they charge enough for everything else to easily cover that... plus they're getting £11 for a piece of paper with their stamp on it (or digital paper in my case). Would work out cheaper if they did a years cover too of 2 tablets and refill.

We tried spot on treatments, but she doesn't like them, are difficult at best to apply without the stuff getting everywhere else and in some case don't bloody work either... and they work out more expensive than the tablets if used each month as supposed to. Also tried some "natural" remedies... that seem OK, but have the same problems as spot on... Dink is much happier with a chewable, tasty tablet

Yeah with the weather we have here in Ontario in winter lately, it makes sense to just treat year-round.

One of the chihuahua's we had many years ago had a bad reaction to Bravecto. We now use a natural treatment called Earth MD, flea and tick prevention, which you just mix in with their food for 1 week, every 6 weeks. As with most treatments, it doesn't stop ticks from attaching, but it does stop them from engorging and will usually drop-off on their own because this stuff makes the dog's blood not so suitable for the ticks. The 2 ticks I did find on Olivia last year were very easy to remove and had only been there for a few hours. We also use a sticky roller (for lint on clothing) after every walk which can help grab any ticks sitting on their fur. 

 

And apparently also feeding raw makes your dog's blood less appealing to ticks as well. We don't really see Coyotes and Wolves in the wild completely infested with ticks and they live in those tick-filled environments. Makes sense.

 

I have never liked the topical treatments. They say not to touch the dog for X number of hours after applying and it just makes me wonder, if it's that poisonous to humans, how is it ok to put it on your dog's skin? Not knocking anyone here who uses those meds, just something to think about though.

Yeah, we don't really find ticks on our dogs where I live, maybe very occasionally... not sure if it's related to being by the coast or not, the place we would get them from if anywhere is on some "commons" which are basically similar to nature preserves, like scrubland... but even then we only had a few on Henry his entire life, and they were easy to get off with tick removers.

Yeah, I don't like the idea of using poisons on Dink, which is why I tried the herbal/natural ones first.. but she was almost always scratching, and whimpering as if being bitten, even with the treatments. So the lesser of 2 evils is best with the Bravecto IMO... we gave it a few months between treatments last time, just to see, but towards the end of the 2 months without Bravecto she started the same behaviours. So we decided to use it again, and fingers crossed, she has been much better... we also changed her diet to a kibble with anti-oxidants, and other stuff for sensitive dogs like lipped-mussels/beetroot pulp?/omega3  etc... she has been much livelier and less itching, and so on. We can really see the change in her coat, and no flaky skin like dandruff present after a month of using it... but also some of that could be down to the evening primrose oil capsules too. And she has also stopped her "phantom pregnancy" type behaviour, so we are very happy with how she is now

I walk her in the evenings as far as I can... with my limitations with the pain and stiffness etc I have. But I'd go through lots of pain for her if I had to... luckily my brother also lives with me, and walks her in the mornings too. And we are always playing with her, tugging ropes, playing ball/fetch, hiding toys for her to find etc... she's a pretty active dog and amuses herself if we are busy/tired etc, so I think she's pretty happy. I hope so.

We live in one of the worst areas for ticks (Rouge River valley and surrounding areas in Ontario), and we also live on a farm with the perfect conditions (tons of other wild animals that carry/transport them and plenty of tall, thick grass every where). So I'm not surprised even with the treatments, she had 2 last year. Actually surprised she didn't get more, considering she loves bounding through the tall grass like a deer, lol.
