dog thread

LukeSavenije

My Mom had to take in the dog blankets from the garden due to heavy rain and storm. In true Jabaluni fashion she knows how to make herself comfortable with any blanket situation:

Also Jessie always gives me this look when you say her name and either food or the phrase "wanna go out ?" in the same sentence. In this case I offered her some biscuits because I was eating my desert and even though she knows exactly that she can't have that she always gives her best and beggs anyways.

You can take a look at all of the Tech that I own and have owned over the years in my About Me section and on my Profile.

I'm Swiss and my Mother language is Swiss German of course, I speak the Aargauer dialect. If you want to watch a great video about Swiss German which explains the language and outlines the Basics, then click here.

If I could just play Videogames and consume Cool Content all day long for the rest of my life, then that would be sick.

Jessie has to go out to Pee every single night at exactly 2 am in the morning and she always goes and wakes up my Mom by scratching her arm and licking her face so that she opens her the front door to let her out. We have a dog latch through the window in the kitchen that leads out to the garden and she uses that during the day but she is too "scared" to come downstairs in the night and go out through the dog latch by herself ? She is 7 now and has been doing that since the first couple of weeks we had her. Jaba on the other hand (is 2 years old btw) sleeps like a baby and you never hear anything from her during the night except when Jessie is done Peeing at two in the morning she sometimes starts barking at random noises and then she obviously wakes up Jaba too and then she goes outside too and provides barking backup ? For all the bad habits that they have they are unreplaceable and are the most important thing in our lives.

Dink's been acting weird the last few days. Been whining a lot, and wants to try and get behind the armchair, and when she manages it she scraps at the carpet there... we looked and there's nothing there. Also has been wanting to get underneath my mum's chair (it has legs), and also going off into her bed to be alone.

When she did it last night, I took her out for a walk, to see if that calmed her down, and to see if she wanted to go toilet... but no, nothing seems to satisfy her so far. I'm hoping we'll find out what she wants soon.

Sometimes dogs act weird. It's not uncommon, so don't worry too much. ;) For a while, not too long ago, Olivia became afraid of out kitchen (and afraid to walk through it to go out to the backyard). She doesn't like when the pots and pans bang around when we're cooking etc, so that was part of it. She's ok with going through now, for the most part. Occasionally will be weary of passing through, but then scoots through anyways. It's really odd and we still don't really know what her issue is or was.

To help get her over this, we put her on leash with the prong collar and gave her no choice but to move forward into the kitchen. When ever she tried to flee, I simply held her in-place with leash pressure. When she willingly chose not to flee without leash pressure, she was heavily rewarded. Correct the behaviour you don't want, and reward the behaviour you do want.

How old is Dink again? If she is 8 months+, it is also likely she is "becoming of age". When dog's approach maturity at a year old, they're behaviour can change. Sometimes quite significantly and you may start to see new behaviours begin to manifest. We noticed this in Olivia (not so much Moses), and that's when she started to exhibit aggressive and reactive tendencies (which is what started me on this whole dog training journey in the first place).

One thing you can do is if she knows the "down" command (lay down) and the "place" command (go to a bed or a mat on the floor), you can have her go to place and practice remaining in a down and not moving from place until you release her. If she get's up and leaves place, just say "wrong", guide her back to place and down again. Practising duration by staying in place will help teach her patience and calmness, and that she doesn't need to be so concerned or frantic about things, regardless of what they may be.

You can also do confidence-building exercises or teach her special tasks. Anything to work her brain. :) She may just literally be bored. Sometimes Olivia gets bored, so we just start doing command drills or teaching her something new.

One of ours is TERRIFIED of the stove and oven running because sometimes it sets off the smoke alarm which then triggers the whole house. Now ANY shrill beep starts her shivering and jumping into our arms. Also she got 'attacked' by a bullfrog ONCE two or three years ago now every frog, toad, or thing that looks like a frog or toad she's completely avoidant of. Tiny little toad, she'll rip your arm off to go to the other side of the street.

I used to dog sit an adorable little PITA dachshund that would wake me up every hour all night to take care of business. When I let him out, he would sniff around for an hour (ok, ten minutes;  it just seemed like an hour) before he would finally hike his leg and deposit exactly six drops (more or less). I would have to drive to work the next morning with toothpicks holding my eyelids open where I had to drive forklifts, etc. Not good.

I finally figured out that, if I took the little guy outside and toss a ball the length of my lot, he would tear after it like a little brown streak of lightning, grab the ball, then bring it back to me and drop it at my feet (his owner didn't even know he liked to play fletch). I would rinse and repeat until he was almost tripping over his tongue (how he fit all that tongue in his mouth is beyond me). He would then sleep through the night although I had to make sure I let him out to make his deposits as soon as I dragged my ample asset out of bed in the morning.

She's just over a year old now. We've tried loads of things to entertain her/distract her, but she's adamant that there's something she needs to get to behind that chair etc. She's now gone off carrots today too, whereas she'll usually go though as many as you can give her all day long. She still eats her food though, so not that worried, and she still likes playing etc.

It could be boredom, cos if she's not eating or sleeping, then she wants attention all the time, and if she doesn't get it she has been known to chew things, so maybe she's just adding to her repertoire of annoyance :D

Oh, yeah, she loves "training" time - I just wish it weren't so damned cold outside right now. So right now I can only do mostly indoor training with her. I'll see what I can add to her bag of tricks. Thanks again for being helpful, I'm not useless when it comes to dogs, but always good to have another outlook, and different things you can teach... appreciate it :)
