AMD officially launches 35w Ryzen APUs

AMD has officially launched their 35w Ryzen 2nd gen APUs.


We knew about the existence of these APUs back in January ish I believe due to leaks but they are finally here officially.

So yeah, the new 35w APUs are the Ryzen 3 2200GE and Ryzen 5 2400GE featuring slightly slower clocks and a lower TDP. We do not know the pricing of them at this time.

The new processors with integrated Radeon Vega graphics, have a 35 W TDP, and at this point in time will only be initially available to system integrators enabling the latter to build small form-factor PCs, rather than directly selling at retail.

AMD’s Ryzen 3 2200GE and Ryzen 5 2400GE APUs pack four Zen cores running at 3.2 GHz default frequency (with multithreading for the Ryzen 5) and integrated Radeon Vega 8 or Radeon Vega 11 graphics respectively. In a bid to reduce TDP of the APUs to 35 W compared to the 65W vresions, AMD had to reduce clocks of the GE chips by 300-400 MHz as showin in the table below. For the integrated graphics, they remain untouched: the Ryzen 3 2200GE has 512 stream processors at 1100 MHz, whereas the Ryzen 5 2400GE has 704 SPs at 1250 MHz. The supported memory controller also retains parity: two DDR4 memory channels up to DDR4-2933.

Anandtech makes a good point about the pricing (or lack thereof) of these APUs.

So yeah, cool chips (no pun intended) for HTPC builds and other small form factor stuff :D.

I’m curious to see what the tdp reduction did to all core turbos. If it didn’t do much then it’s pretty impressive they got it in 35w.

Well thats intresting, That means maybe AMD is capable of making some kind of thing like this but for laptops? My R5 2500U's 15W TDP isnt enough xD

It's a weird situation. Most of the benefits of zen+ are present but we're still on 14nm.

 

Otherwise, i find it impressive that we can now get apu's with performance comparable to the ps4 and xbone (original releases), all in a 35w package

Are you able to manipulate the TDP in the BIOS? Cos all the Ryzen Mobile chips have Configurable TDP.

 

So far only not a single OEM that I know of has taken advantage of 25w Configurable TDP limit.

I doubt it but that would be a good feature.  I have a feeling that configurability is designed to be used by the manufacturer and not the end user though.

Yeah it is normally although in the past some OEMs have left these kind of features in the BIOS.

I think OEMs like to take high performance chips (well, relatively speaking) and configure them to a much lower TDP.  People see a model name they recognize as being powerful, not realizing it's been knee-capped, it allows them to make the device thinner by skimping on cooling, and of course increase battery life as well.

Now put those 35W cpus in laptops. My HP 4540s has i3 3110M cpu which uses 35W TDP.

I want laptop with most powerfull AMD iGPU + 4 core AMD CPU

Computer users fall into two groups:
those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail.

From what I've seen. Some OEMs are selling 25w (Higher TDP version of 15w) Intel 8th Gen Coffee Lake CPUs in their higher end products.

 

The thing is, OEMs don't seem to be taking Ryzen Mobile seriously and are not using it in the same places that CoffeeLake would be used in the first place.

IDK, they might be, last ones I saw were Skylake. Honestly Intel's constant re-branding makes me forget that Skylake is several generations old by this point.

Well my Envy X360 does go up to 25W plugged in but thats about it

They're lower TDP 2400G and 2200Gs. So whatever architecture you'd consider that, this is it. I'd say it's closer to Zen than Zen+, though the IMC is upgraded.

The reason no price is listed is that they're OEM-only for now. I hope we'll see retail availability soon. And I hope we'll soon see them in a BGA package for laptops. That would be great.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...
