Memory inductors on older Nvidia GPUs are failing

Nvidia Reference cards are having there memory inductors exploding!

Source(s):

Quote

Based on his research of looking at what type of memory inductors that are available and based on the size of the inductors that are there, they really are not rated for the type of amperage that is being pushed through it. -UFD Tech

GPUs affected: GTX 780, 780Ti, 980Ti, and Titan X (Maxwell). And possibly more that are yet to be discovered.

Quote

Basically this is speculated that this was a cost saving measure by Nvidia to save money when there building the PCBs of these cards not putting high enough rated memory inductors on the PCB - so these things are popping because Nvidia cut corners- UFD Tech

But its not the end of the world!

Quote

replacing the inductor that is there with a bit of soldering can make it as good as new, mostly. You can get the card working again - if you have the soldering skills - but who knows what could happen to the card after that. -UFD Tech

So it would seem that Nvidia is having more issues with older reference GPUs, granted these are old and reference but this should not be happening and is still a problem. It seems to be 100% a result of Nvidia cost saving measures.

Its also a little interesting that LTT talked about on the WAN Show as to why Nvidia is not used in Apple products, Nvidia seems to have a tendency to cut corners to save cost, and they did it again.

Wow LOL. I was thinking about buying a used 980Ti but not now.

They would cut corners like that again, now hopeful the community will punish them correctly.

They are dying because Nvidia is cheap and gave them Memory Inductors rated below spec.

By exploding do they mean like Galaxy Note 7 exploding?

And this is why the 2018 refresh of the 15” MacBook Pro will likely use an HQ Intel processor and mobile Radeon Vega graphics taking advantage of that EMIB.

This sort of thing generally doesn't apply to the mobile gpus Apple seems to be so fond of, besides they could get the card engineered to whatever specs they provided if they wanted to.

I suppose this is why you don't buy reference cards... although I've had this happen on my R9 290 too in a different part of the pcb, probably due to a faulty capacitor rather than to poor pcb design (it was in the power delivery system and since that thing was absurdly oversized I just scraped off one of the 6 60A lanes and the card was as good as new).

It's pretty unforgivable on the Titan X though, the damn thing launched at 1200$ and could only be purchased from nvidia... what excuse is there to be cutting corners with a card like that?

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

cutting corners. some lcds from LG are known for their shitty capacitors that will die for sure in some time, not maybe but for certain. They just don't make things like they used to i guess.

True, but they card is not exploding. Neither is the GPU. Just the inductor fizzles.

Given the Samsung tablet fiasco, people might assume their 980TI could set the PC ablaze with that title.

It's probably a case of they used min spec for a card that most people OC, either way I never buy reference anyway for good reason and it is part of why EVGA has such a good rep, they greatly overspec.

(for reference I'm referring to their custom PCBs and motherboards, see some of buildzoids other content for examples)
