I love your naming convention, at my place we use a random name generator, e.g. one server is whalegrade, funny enough it's a little 1U atom server... such a big name. The NAS is Serapeum (short for Serapeum of Alexandria) though that was self named. Then there are a bunch of others on the ProxMox server.

yeah i just switched it used to be my name and what processor was in the system but that seemed stupid then some else mentioned they named a computer System scooty puff JR and the ultimate blame ends up on @Zberg for getting me hooked again...

I guess maybe I should start shit-posting in here rather than the C-19 thread since that's winding down.

Son of Foldy Puff Jr, Celeron G1820 which I de-lidded for practice, cleaned the glue, applied Kryonaut, then used the CPU retainer to hold the IHS back onto is running at stock voltage with an Arctic 12 passive cooler. CPU only makes about 25W flat out, it's sitting at 50-55C at about 50-60% load feeding the P106-100, not bad for a passively cooled CPU.

I'm curious, if the CPU isn't at 100% feeding the card then it's not bottle-necking the card right?

sounds about right if its at say 75% or less shouldn't be an issue if its at say 90% or more then it could be.

Good. I'd really like to keep that very low power passive CPU to reduce maintenance needed on the system long term. I'd love to rig some kind of large passive cooler on the P106-100 as well but I'm not confident in the VRM cooling and memory cooling needed for a passive cooling solution to work out much less the 100W of GPU heat to shed passively? That's a lot of energy to move without any fans. I'll just have to check on it from time to time I guess!

 

Ha yea. Now that I've got FAHControl working on my laptop I can monitor things and keep the other systems working, Foldy Puff Sr can get some GPU work now more often and I'm at 15.5mil points already!

Rule of thumb is that the CPU should be at least 1.9-2.4GHz YMMV. The traffic is bursts and nvidia cards put a spin-lock on the thread so you can probably enable some more aggressive power states on the CPU and as long as it spins up quickly when needed it should be OK

The G1820 is 2.7ghz X 2 cores so I'm OK on that front.

This particular sample seems run around 1 volt with Asus 'power saving' stuff turned on in BIOS, it won't undervolt any worthwhile amount in the few minutes I spent messing with it, at 25W (prime95 load!) it's still pretty low power. I'd guess it's about 15-18W while folding, I'm not sure if there's a way to view that power use in Linux but there probably is.
