So what? If you track everyone what's that really accomplish? I don't support it but what exactly are they trying to find. If it is terrorist and criminals they are not going to be using the Internet bare. They will have Tor, VPNs, Proxies, and so on. Not impossible to see through but a lot harder then just collecting people's data.

What I find most disturbing, is that the mind behind this bill and the person who is largely responsible for forcing it through, is now our unelected Prime Minister.

 

Yet, people are so blinded by the EU and the Brexit shambles, literally ask 100 people on the street which intrusive spying bill just passed, and I'd guess 1-2% would be able to tell you. The fact this bill will be passed into law soon, hasn't even been mentioned by our mainstream press.

Indeed, but it's no surprise. Labour have been abstaining on anything remotely important for almost a decade. There's no opposition, the Liberal Democrats are the only party that opposed this bill, but they committed political suicide by propping up the Tories in coalition in the first place (they have 8 MPs left, haha). Even the SNP abstained, and I am clueless to why they would do that, their manifesto even stated they opposed the bill...

 

People's apathy really pisses me off, the mass data collection that the GCHQ was doing was judged to be illegal by a recent enquiry, yet instead of the populace being hugely pissed off, we just sort of shrugged and let them pass new laws to legitimize the bulk data collection (otherwise known as spying on every single one of your own citizens).

Below is all you need to read to know how this is going to be overused abused (just like all legislation aimed at catching dem terrorists, it'll be about a week before it's used for minor offences). The difference this time, they're not making much of an effort to hide that fact.

  • Require communication service providers (CSPs) to retain UK internet users' "Internet connection records" – which websites were visited but not the particular pages and not the full browsing history – for one year
  • Allow police and intelligence officers to see the Internet connection records, as part of a targeted and filtered investigation, without a warrant

This isn't about terrorism at all, it's about letting people know they can be watched at all times so that they wouldn't do anything that the government might not approve of.

 

There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time.



But at any rate they could plug in your wire whenever they wanted to. You have to live - did live, from habit that became instinct - in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized.

Usually the goal is to gather meta-data so you can pretty much reconstruct 'who's talking to who'. It can be quite useful in counter-terrorism efforts. So for example when a phone or a laptop in Iraq is captured, you pretty much milk it for data, then crossreference it with the meta-data here and see if any user matches up.

 

Likewise, it can be very useful once a group slips through and actually commits a succesful attack. Although it doesn't prevent the first attack, it can be extremely helpful in tracking down the rest of the cell, thereby preventing the same group from succesfully committing attack after attack after attack.

You only have to look at the statistics to see how succesful these programs are. In the 70's, terror cells often managed to stay active for years. Nowadays, even in 'intelligence-failure-Europe', it's rare for groups to last after a first attack. Plenty of them get busted in an even earlier stage.

 

That isn't to say there aren't more shady uses for this kind of big brother stuff, but there are genuine well-intended good-guy uses for it. 

 

I'm still surprised so many people think VPNs will really be the answer to this. There's a good chance many of them have at least some kind of cooperation behind the scenes with intelligence services, if they aren't outright ran by them. I know I would. 

Strange how people don't trust their government, yet put supreme confidence in a random VPN provider you really know nothing about. At least the government is bound by law and has oversight. What do you know about your VPN?

Details: 12GB ram, GTX 1080, USB card passed through to windows 10 VM. VM's OS drive is the SATA SSD. Rest of resources are for Plex, Duplicati, Spaghettidetective, Nextcloud, and game servers.

That doesn't matter much if the intelligence agencies start breaking laws, get their approval from secret rubber-stamp courts, abuse their powers and flat-out lie when asked about it.  And if this all happens with permission from the very top, circumventing government oversight, you get what basically happened in the US between the approval of the Patriot Act and Snowden's revelations.

I agree it's a mess and some paranoia is justified. That being said... it's not an easy black and white topic. Most people working in those jobs genuinely try to protect the public, and feel like they're hamstrung by the privacy laws. All these 'big brother'  programs have shown promise in the past. So the problem is that privacy and security are conflicting values, and mutually exclusive in practise.

 

Whichever is more important is up to society to realize, but one has to realize it does come at a cost. Right now it just seems like most people don't feel privacy is 'worth it'. I know these kind of meta-data programs aren't popular, but they have saved lives.

That's also why 'the people at the top'  tend to keep on the side of the intel agencies here. When they're confronted by the rundown of what these programs have achieved, it makes it very hard to strike them down, knowing it'll likely increase casualties that you will wear political responsibility for.

 

Now I'm not saying it should go one way or the other, I'm just trying to clarify it isn't as black and white as people consider. It's one of those very grey areas.

 

And my point was mostly to underline that people have a misplaced trust in VPNs. If you use a VPN because you don't 'trust' the government you're really only relocating the problem, as you're pretty much taking a blind gamble at the trustworthiness of the VPN provider.

In most police states it's actually rather unwise to use a VPN or encryption on your home connection as it simply identifies you as a target of interest.

Somebody is going to quote me and ask why I posted what I did because they are going say that this has nothing to do with govt. surveillance since most of those I quoted died prior to the technology ... well my reply to those is this ... read the quote and research the ideology behind them and the understanding will come to you, if you cannot understand it then well I am not sure how to explain it to you without disrupting your perception of politics and government intervention.

 

But alas I will still be argued against any how...
