UK Mass Surveillance Law has just passed the Parliament's Approval

Guest

Surveillance has been one of the most debated security topics in the world because of how many people it would encompass

Countries such as China and Russia have been heavily criticized for their laws though they aren't the only countries that have been in the spotlight

A man named Edward Snowden revealed how large the surveillance operations of the NSA really were so it is no surprise that the topic has caught everyone's attention

Well, the UK Parliament has decided to put the rubberstamp on a bill that would legalize the bulk collection of data from Internet users

Quote

The UK's Investigatory Powers Bill has completed its passage through parliament and now only awaits Her Majesty's stamp of approval before becoming law.

Also known as the Snoopers' Charter, the legislation has been criticised as being among the most onerous in the world upon the civilian population, and will require British ISPs to retain a curtailed form of their customers' internet browsing histories – including what websites they had visited – for 12 months so that various authorities could request it for investigative purposes.

Additional powers are legislated for, including offensive hacking, despite concerns about the State finding an appropriate balance between creating and patching exploits, and the collection of bulk personal data by government spies for the sake of running enormous queries on surveillance data sets.

The bill went through the Conservative party who strongly supported the bill and the Labour Party whom decided to abstain

The scary part would be the implications of such a bill and the power the authorities now have

Quote

He also flags up what he describes as the bill’s “woefully under-debated” new power: aka Internet Connection Records (ICRs) — the requirement on communications services providers to collect and store real-time data on the websites accessed by all users for a full 12 months.

“This unprecedented level of micro-surveillance is accompanied by a machine to make sense of the mass of data, called a ‘Filter’, but is in essence, a search engine. It can match these ICRs with your mobile phone location data and call histories. It can, we believe, be used to profile the social relationships and the sexual and political activities of every U.K. citizen,” says Killock of ICRs.

Yes, the bill has a part that states that every UK citizen will be given a profile based on their sexuality and political views

The only way the bill can be prevented from being implemented is the Queen's command

I'm pretty sure the UK already has some sort of program going on though legalizing it would basically open up more doors for surveillance to become widespread

It would be funny if it wasn't so true.

Jeez, when will my government actually sort out the real problems? I've abstained from voting in previous elections/referendums as I can't find reliable trustworthy data on the issues at hand in the first place. Politics in this country is basically non-existent as it doesn't matter who gets into power it'll go to hell anyway; the little guy will always get screwed and civil servants will continue to not be as they have personal agendas.

Heck if they just asked me I'd tell them...

I'm 33 years old, white and have been a UK citizen my whole life, my sexual preference is straight, I like watching hardcore porn and masturbation porn (strangely so goes my GF) and my political view is fuck the lot of em.

I guess I'll be using much more of the 100GBs of secure VPN access I just purchased than I originally planned because while I'm fine with telling them I'm not fine with them just taking my personal information.

Let's see how my database entry looks when in 12 months time it shows I've only ever accessed a single encrypted webserver.

Also inb4 they ban the use of VPN to hide your activity.

At the point QE2 can barely lift a pen to do her crossword puzzle. She's 90 and hasn't made a public appearance in months. I'm wondering if she died already and they're just keeping quiet to piss of Charles.

EU to stop their surveillance efforts.

1) They are still currently in the EU

2) Do you think they are the only ones spying on their citizens

Terrorists and other criminals necessitate precautions like using tor and/or VPN's, are governments that collect this info just trying to catch the criminals dumb enough not to use tor and/or VPN's because other than that they're just getting info from average citizens.

The smart move would be to invest in some VPN clients.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.
