XFX TS Series 550W is this the same as TS bronze in tier 3? can anyone recommend this for budget built or is there something better

CX550, CX550M and Be Quiet Pure Power 10 500W are better than it, for example.

Look at the G3 reviews on TomsHW,  1 died under OPP, 1 nearly melted the bulk cap casing due to shitty OTP and one gave 11V on the 12V rail under OCP/OPP

I need to change that actually. The bronze TS are the Seasonic S12 so I gotta bump that down.

I've had 3 corsair TX750m last year paired with an undervolter rx vega 56. The first randomly got fried. The second got fried and fried the Motherboard with it. The third has just done the same 2 days ago, fried the new motherboard with it. If it's tier one.. my god.

Can you elaborate on the frying thing? PSUs "frying" components (sending too much current) is usually the fault of the component that got fried, not the PSU's.

I would start to think my grounding may be an issue.  3 PSUs seems quite unlucky.  Were they all the same motherboard model?

Well, both times the motherboards got fried (not working at all) after the PSU stopped working too. The first time the PSU itself caused my PC to shut down and after some days it's gone. Then, the second model did shut down again by itself in idle and it fried my asrock b350 pro 4 too. Then, I bought a third Corsair and an Asus pro x370, the PC shut down while playing a game, PSU stopped working correctly and the motherboard is gone too.

I've 3 other PC with other EOM Psus at home and in much years I've never had a problem.

Are the higher tier PSUs more resistant to power surges/brownouts? I had a power surge to about 300V (it should be 220-240V in normal conditions)  and it fried two of my ram slots so now I can only use my two sticks of ram in single channel. I have a corsair vs650 and I'm considering the RM750x. So I just wanted to ask that will a higher tier PSU protect my pc from a power surge?

An RMx wouldn't be a bad investment either way, but it's no replacement for a good surge protector.

Sounds like you need to use a surge protector or not reuse cables from an old PSU, or something along those lines. 3 times with the same PSU is odd.

Yes, but there are exceptions like the Super Flower Leadex Gold which has tons of issues with supplying power to systems where the AC outlet doesn't give it a steady supply of power.

Fried RAM slots are odd. Make sure you don't have bent CPU socket pins first.

The RM750x has good protections. First, it would be best to get a surge protector/UPS before getting a nice PSU that might just get killed again.

I would like to see a breakdown for myself on the criteria.  My understanding is still kind of limited, but what I do know is that:

  • Value (price) does not factor in
  • Acoustics don't factor in (I believe)
  • Reviews heavily factor in
  • I think the capacitor quality is one of the things that can put a PSU under Tier 3, even if the rest of it is built ok.
  • All PSUs can and will fail eventually, but the cheaper ones tend to go out with more of a pop because of poor regulations/quality.  They can damage your components when they fail.

I think Chieftec should be avoided but somebody else can chime in.

You have a different power supply then. CX550 was released in 2016.

If you bought this mysterious PSU in 2012 then the warranty is most likely expired, shame. You could have just rma'd it otherwise.

Turns out I made a mistake xD

I'm not home right now, had to call my dad yesterday and I asked him which power supply is on my PC, turns out it's a CX430, not a CX550, those with the green name on the side. He (my dad) bought a CX550 for his PC last year, that's why I switched the names. My bad!

Btw, I decided to go with a G3 550W, it's already waiting for me when I come back home, let's see how it performs. Thanks for poiting out my mistake!

Added it. At the same time I bumped the Seasonic Focus Plus Gold to T2 because they perform nearly identically.

Only because their product line is so confusing. lol. I just bought a Corsair PSU for a client build instead of an EVGA because I didn't know which EVGA model to go for and most that were in the same price range were worse quality than the Corsair. :/
