MIT research shows the hole in the Ozone Layer might be healing

This one isn't strictly tech related but it's relevant and great news.

In the 1980s scientists proved a thinning in the Ozone Layer over Antarctica, research over the decade showed this to be caused by a specific type of gas called CFC which we were using in compressed spray cans and as a refrigerant gas in both home and in business. Usage of the gas was banned worldwide in 1987 and it looks like this move might have worked.

In a paper submitted to the journal Science, Solomon's team shared their discovery that the September ozone hole has gotten smaller by over 1.5 million square miles (about 3.88 million sq. km) since the peak of depletion in 2000. The scientists expected the ozone replenishment to continue, and predicted that the ozone hole will have recovered permanently by mid-century, unless future volcanic eruptions come to disrupt the healing process.

 

1.5 million square miles is around the size of the Indian continent. The issue with CFCs is they use chlorine which causes a chemical reaction with ozone causing it to break down.

Chlorine originating from chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) triggers chemical reactions that lead to the destruction of the ozone layer. The Montreal Protocol, signed by most of the world's nations in 1987, sought to curb human production of CFCs in a global effort to restore the ozone layer.

This reduction seems to closely match predicted shrinkage from a simulation created by the same team giving hope that we are on track to repair the hole by 2050, that is as long as we don't have any significant volcanic activity between now and then.

This is excellent news, for once we seem to have acted as a planet early enough to save the ozone layer, just a shame we ignored global warming for so long that by the time the ozone layer is healed we will all be drowning under the melting ice caps.

Engine emissions cause global warming, not thinning of Ozone. Trust me, we have a huge reason to stop using fossil fuels as quickly as possible. Repairing the ozone layer will not do us any good if we are all drowned by melted ice.

I heard it yesterday and it's fantastic news. We have apparently solved a large environmental problem that we've caused by seizing use of CFC and the Earth seems to slowly recover. Disaster averted.

 

We still have a giant problem on our hands - namely climate change - and very few are willing to do something about it because people believe it's a hoax to presumably take your money and harms businesses (since when did you as a person hold businesses above your own needs anyway?).

Even if there is no apocalypse and it's a hoax, the reduced waste and pollution locally would be worth the cost. Hooray for reduced risk of cancer but of course that's not worth the investment it seems.

 

I think it was a mistake to use the term global warming to begin with even if the overall temperature on Earth is increasing slowly. The warming isn't immediately seen, however the more extreme and unstable weather is easier to notice because people will point to a very harsh winter and say where is the global warming them scientists were talking 'bout?

now to find a way to artificially keep the ice caps frozen

While this is a good step, doesn't solve global warming. 

 

However, I have solved it. I'll explain

 

We just hook up a bunch of air conditioners to solar panels and run them during the day. PROBLEM SOLVED! 

 

Kidding. It doesn't work that way.

We are due another Ice age I'm just waiting for us to have to get as much co2 into the atmosphere to survive.

The thing about that is, put enough of it in the atmosphere and by causing global warming it could actually trigger a new ice age.
