OnePlus One Reportedly Explodes In Its Owner’s Pocket

PillowSmoke

We’ve all heard horror stories about exploding phone batteries and unfortunately it seems that OnePlus has caught their first case of an exploding battery so early into their existence. According to reports, it seems that there has been a recent case where one user has reported that their OnePlus One handset had exploded in his pocket while he was out and about.

The explosion not only destroyed the phone, but it also resulted in him getting burnt in the process. According to the poster MiYzu, he claims that there wasn’t any external stress to the phone prior to the explosion, suggesting that there could be a hardware defect in the phone. Interestingly enough the OnePlus One handset uses a lithium polymer battery as opposed to the more common lithium ion.

This apparently makes it hardware to damage via external pressure, thus corroborating speculation that it could be due to a hardware defect that caused the explosion. MiYzu has since submitted a support ticket and a OnePlus representative has managed to get in touch with him about the issue.

Assuming that this is indeed a hardware defect, it could prove to be a big blow to OnePlus who not only have had trouble getting their phones into the hands of their customers, but have also come under fire recently for some of their more controversial marketing tactics.

LiPO batteries are pretty dangerous. They have extremely fast charge and discharge rates, but their lifespan is less than ideal, and they are known to explode.

I mean, I know it's a $300 smartphone that has the specs of a $600 smartphone, but damn, exploding phones? Nope, I'm good. I realize that other phone manufacturers have this problem as well, with the most notorious being Samsung. I really hope that this was just some fluke. If I start to hear more news of exploding OPOs, then uh...that's a big ole red flag.

And as an FYI, I don't nor have I ever owned any Samsung smartphones. They're great phones, don't get me wrong, it's just that I hear way too many stories of their phones literally burning. Hell, it even happened to my mom's Galaxy S4. Her screen was LITERALLY burned from the inside. That's just insane, and no phone should be like that.

Not surprised, Do they even have a QA/QC department?

Apparently they don't have a Legal department to check with before they made their stupid contest either...

Cyanogen guys:  "hey, let's get into the market! yay!, look at this company  'OnePlus' let's partner with them, what could possibly go wrong?"

this has nothing to do with the CM guys, its defective hardware, regardless if the phone has shitty build quality or completely sucks, this opportunity was good for them, it gives bigger recognition

What genius said yes to putting LiPo in a device THAT WILL GET ABUSED.

FFS. Those batteries are not to be trifled with.

It's one thing to have them in hobby vehicles and UAVs. Quite another to be in a "mass" produced product people have with them on a daily basis.

I said "mass", because OPO seems more concerned with bullshit contests and invites than simply selling every last unit they have.

Yeah, I was surprised to see that this phone actually ships with a LiPo. One of my hobbies is RC trucks and helicopters that use LiPo's so I've seen how volatile these things can be.

Put it this way - many RC hobbyists including myself store their LiPo batteries in a FIRE RESISTANT POUCH. It's even a requirement at most if not all RC race tracks to store your LiPo's in a fire resistant bag of some sort when they're not in use.

Don't think I would want to be carrying one of them around in my pocket every day.

Also, when in the name of almighty did a phone need the kind of power dump that a LiPo can provide?

wanting to run your quadcopter while lifting a 7D w/lens? Yes. You need that kind of raw grunt.

Using a phone? Honestly.

Did they do it cause it sounded cool? Cause thats what it seems like. They couldn't have possibly thought it was a smart idea on any level. The most pricey LiPos with the most sophisticated maintainers and chargers can still go tits up, so what the hell were tey thinking for on a phone?

Despite this one case where a phone exploded, I still say they made the right choice in battery. My OPO has the longest battery life of any phone I've ever had. I only need to charge mine about once a week. I think the big reasons they chose a LiPo battery was for the slimmer and more flexible design of the batteries, to reduce weight, and for a much longer life span. And by longer life span I'm referring to that lithium ion batteries don't age very well, after the first year there are usually noticeable signs of reduced performance. I also tend to pamper my electronic devices, so I have no real worry about the battery being less durable. As long as you don't abuse the thing there's really no issue here.

Except there was nothing illegal about it ;)

Other than it barred men from participating, which is sexist.

Something can be legal and you still can get sued for it.

True, but considering it was a woman only contest, and entirely voluntary, it would get thrown out of court. Not to mention that it made requirement that you had to be naked, or otherwise scantily clad, to win.
