I mean, I would assume the brands would test the CPU before releasing it, but after release, it's up to you to decide when you want to buy it.

usually a month is good, because then you can wait for reviews for the CPU and (if you're planning to get a new motherboard) motherboard reviews to come out.

Which means that if the 3950X is a genuine monster, I'm blowing about a thousand dollars on my rig just to get onto Zen 2.

I think i waited 3 months after the release of the Ryzen 2700x to buy mine and then it died within 4 months, the memory controller on the CPU died and wouldnt accept Dual Channel Memory, we at first thought it was ram or Motherboard but turned out to be CPU.

for a new gen like zen 2 wait for benchmarks and supply, also flushes out most bugs, didnt do that for coffee lake cause we knew what we were getting. Still, preordering the 9900k cause me to get the wrong motherboard, no reason not to wait on x570 cause we don't know which boards have the highest memory overclocks atm.

i was considering 3950x but what's the point? who would need more than 3900x, realistically

Preorder and then send back if benchmarks aren't good enough. Then I'll order something else
