I think this is a good year for basically every price point in the Android market and I don't see any space left for a disappointing OnePlus 7 which now finally settled.

Wish they'd come out with a pro version or something with an OLED screen. I own a Zenfone 5 and the screen isn't bad at all, but it's no OLED.

The ability to take panoramic shots by itself is pretty interesting to me. Also so happy to see it going near stock, ZenUI is pretty trash tbh.

This looks great other than a couple of things.

1. That camera will last one drop when the camera's in selfie mode. OnePlus' solution on the 7 Pro is much better.
2. No OLED. Cheaper phones have had OLED screens for years. I mean they're not exactly new tech. The original Galaxy S had one and their A40 which costs about half as much as the Zenfone also has one so there's not really any excuse

Okay well that might work. It just seems less elegant than the OnePlus camera.

What about OLED burn in? Has this issue been solved?

Besides, well done LCD screen is not really that much worse than OLED.

I mean I've been using OLED screens on my phones for years, as have the rest of my family. Never had even the slightest hint of burn in on a phone.

Seems pretty reasonable. I don't give a flying fuck about OLED and I don't take selfies, so neither the camera or the display would be an issue for me. I just don't have particularly good opinion on ASUS.

I kinda like this implementation because it might work for those sky high shots where you tilt the camera upwards while the phone is in the portrait orientation and the camera rotates upwards while you can still see your composition window, alongside panaromas.

Is 48MP really needed on a phone camera? I mean you're not going to be taking professional photos with it, so what's the point?

It's so close, soooo close to perfect. Under display fingerprint reader and I would have done my best to scrape up the money but I guess I'm sticking to the G6, especially now that I don't feel I need the performance upgrade anymore. I am super happy it had a headphone jack though, that's so nice

Is this necessary though? Isn't 12MP 4000 by 3000? You're not going to be taking professional level photos on a phone, so why is it needed? Also if it is 48MP, why not let people take 48MP photos, seems misleading, even if it is pointless.

The smartphone would benefit quite a bit from a larger sensor with larger individual photodiodes for a multitude of reasons, mostly down to better high ISO noise performance in low-light alongside other reasons. 

 

However, the cynic in me feels that the whole “48MP” thing is a lot about marketing and bigger numbers. I’m not exactly sure why they couldn’t do a 1/2” 12MP sensor with much larger native photodiodes but apparently, this is how they’re going to do it, by utilizing a higher resolution sensor combined with a special filter that allows 4 of these pixels to be combined into a single, larger one (well, almost).

 

And apparently, it is possible to shoot at the full 48MP. Don’t expect good results, though. If you really need such a high pixel count, get a Sony a7Riii/Nikon Z7/LUMIX S1R.

I think the little plastic lens in front can't provide enough resolution for 48MP. In big DSLR world, how many lenses are sharp enough for that many pixels? Only a handful of really expensive lenses. Zeiss Otus, anyone?

A larger sensor also means a larger image circle produced by the lens. And very likely the lens with multiple elements will be thicker/longer. With modern phone getting thinner. It's just hard to package a big lens group without a big chunk sticking out in the back of the phone.

Interesting take on camera, it's quite impressive really. Good they didn't sacrifice the display with cutouts. The big battery capacity is great for sure. For specs and all the price is very good actually considering some twice the price phones. Sure, depends what everyone is seeking and values the most what each phone offers over the others.
