UK Bank NatWest Trialling Debit Cards with Fingerprint Readers

UK-based bank NatWest is trialling new debit cards with built in fingerprint readers, in order to improve payment security.

 

Currently, in the UK, NFC payments can be made with your card under the contactless scheme for payments up to £30, without the need for any further authentication. Adding the fingerprint sensor to the card will allow users to remove that cap, effectively replacing the current chip-and-pin system. NFC payments made using Apple or Google pay are already unrestricted in many major stores.

 

The technology has been developed by Gemalto, and is explained in their video here: 

 

All fingerprint data is stored locally on the card and is not transferred to the bank's servers. 

 

Hopefully this will improve the security of contactless payments, and I think it could be a step in pushing reluctant adopters to use it more often.

This is actually great for old people who are having problems remembering all the card PIN codes.

Nice, was wondering when this tech would become useable... I've literally been at stores with my mum and have been cringing watching her try to use the chip and pin system and thought it'd be nice if they increased the limit or used other tech to make it easier for her. Hopefully other banks follow as Natwest is part of RBS IIRC. Only thing I wonder about is, if they do this they'll surely have to have all cards delivered securely to the proper recipient then to make sure someone else doesn't register that card with their fingerprints instead. Unless they will have something like you have to go onto your online banking and activate the card or soemthing... but then the elderly in my experience don't like using or aren't even set up for online banking.

Regardless, I hope to see this kind of tech get more widely used, as it stands with NFC/contactless cards can be cloned etc... wouldn't be a big deal for me to spot unauthorized payments for me as I get notifications immediately and can lock the card straight away. But for people like my parents, they wouldn't notice until their next monthly statement perhaps, which could be a BIG deal.

Nah I still think something like ApplePay is the best option with the single use authentication codes

I have trouble enough to get my phone to recognize my finger print... even after making multiple entries for the same finger... So to me, this wouldn't work that well.
I prefer just being able to tap and leave for purchases under 100$ and requiring a NIP above that.

Hope this removable cap can be applied to google pay. Much has having a card or cash in my pocket not really affecting me. I'd rather just have my phone and pay for stuff over 30 with it.

Item is presented such a card in conferences in 2017, launched a pilot with JCB in Japan in April 2018, and they're launching it with Société générale these days as well...

I guess it wasn't covered by the usual tech press used here because it's a non UK firm launching it outside of the UK/US, but still is quite older tech now, it's just not mainstream yet

You can already do that, I regularly spend well over the £30 limit and use Google Pay

Not very useful for people that have had their local branches closed though... nearest to us now is 11-20 miles away IIRC for Natwest. We used to have a Natwest for at least 30 years where I live, and closed about a few years back, and just recently both the local branch and next nearest branch of Barclays closed too.

For me it's not a problem as I don't usually use branches anyway, mostly use cards and online banking. But for people like my mother and the rest of the elderly or technically uncoordinated people, they like using the branches as it seems easier and has always been their way of doing things.

I was refused a £70 bill only yesterday with Google Pay, even the shop assistant said it should work and yet it didn't.

 

Entered my card, used my pin and it went through immediately.

I decided to go and look at the Google Pay help and yeah, it should have worked. According to Google payments upto £30 require nothing except a tap, over £30 and you have to unlock your phone for it to go through. Hmm, I might have to ring my bank if it happens again.

Not really. Don't tell me you never ever had a situation you had to enter a PIN and you couldn't remember it for a second or two. Or you were hitting it in already and you had a moment of "shit, am I hitting it in the correct order"...
