Gravemind reacted to Biggerboot in Will this PSU fit in this case?
Even though the ATX standard is pretty reliable, some smaller cases like this Apevia do have limits.  Any longer than the PSU I had wouldn't have worked because the cables came really close to the hard drive cage.

ye it will fit that psu is standard size its not till like 800w and above they start to get longer but even with a longer one should still fit

    you majorly fucked up.
touching the platters is a no-no if you want your data back, same with opening up the hard drive altogether, as they are usually in a vacuum, or in some special helium blend.

honestly, your only option would be to turn to a professional data recovery service. there is no way i know of that could help you in this case

If you touched the platter, you're more or less boned. You can try sending it off to a data recovery specialist, but an exposed platter in any environment other than a clean room, especially one that has fingerprints on it is essentially gone.

If a lot of people complain about leaks, then just stay on the side of caution and move along. Even if it's a good cooler, it's not worth possibly destroying your system over.

What kind of CPU were you looking at? You need to decide that first, then look for a compatible motherboard.

Gravemind reacted to another random person in Best deal you ever got on computer parts?
So basically every so often I scroll through gumtree (Australian used online marketplace) looking for deals and I come across this ad saying that they were selling 12 Lenovo IBM desktops, 2 Optiplex's and a few other pretty decent computers for about $150 AUD, which is an absolute bargain. Counting it up I figured that if I refurbished those desktops I would get a pretty good $500 AUD net profit off them. Well, I went to pick them up and I didn't notice at first so after I paid the guy, loaded the lot into my car and drove home, I realised that they were left in an unsealed dusty roof space, no not the attic Americans have, it's just literally the space between the ceiling insulation and roof tiles. so basically the first thing I did was pop all of them open and I swear I have never seen so much dust caked up in one spot before. It was as if the guy had used the desktops as a dustpan from sweeping the floor for a decade. Well, let's just say it took me about 5 bags full of dust before I could even get the desktops into an air compressor cleaning state. As it turns out the desktops worked fine (phew) and I managed to make around $650 net profit off the sale of them.

Yeah the inflation because of the demand is honestly digusting, the people making over MSRP because of hype. I was so fucking lucky staying up all night and getting the 8gb for $250

Gravemind reacted to SpaceGhostC2C in Need help finding a type of board
It's perfectly fine, they are backward compatible. The GPU doesn't need 3.0, it will just use it if available (typically graphic cards don't exhaust the PCIe 2.0 bandwidth; 3.0 is a standard allowing for more bandwidth). I have a pair R9 280, which are also "PCIe 3.0" running in an AM3+ board with PCIe 2.0 only.

There's no AM3+ board with PCIe 3.0 apart from a rare version ("Gen3") of the Asus Sabertooth 990FX. The reason is that the AMD chipsets for these boards didn't have 3.0 (it wasn't a thing back then), so manufacturers would have to add their own controllers to manage it, and graphic cards don't really need it. It's becoming increasingly important for PCIe SSDs, but that's a different story.

if it zapped the modem, it's more likely the mobo than the psu.

Gravemind got a reaction from Cryosec in Do you use Antivirus software or not?
Well, if you're gifted at recognizing and removing malicious software manually, then you can live dangerously and just go with whatever your OS has by default, like Microsoft Security Essentials.

But not having an antivirus at all is a terrible idea. Even people who just Facebook and Youtube can occasionally get nasty bits of software.
