Intel introduces a new motherboard size: 5x5 - Smaller than Mini-ITX

Intel launches a new motherboard format aimed at mini-PCs.

The new format is called "5x5", where it is 29% smaller than Mini-ITX, and allows you to install the CPU you want.

It is the smallest motherboard size for socket-able CPUs

- It takes LGA based CPU (Skylake right now, of course), up to 65W CPU

- USB and Ethernet

- M.2 Storage and 1x SATA plug to plug a normal HDD/SSD

- Wireless card can be installed

- Dual channel laptop RAM modules

- Sadly, no PCI-E plug like Mini-ITX, there is no room for it.

Due to the lack of PCI-E plug, it is definitely designed for system where at most Iris Pro Intel graphics solution is enough for the targeted system. For example, it can used as a video playback media center system, or streaming system, or Point of Sales, or kiosk, Web browsing & Office system where the user wants a small form factor, and such.

Currently there is no information on cases supporting it, nor motherboard manufactures making any of these, or available dates are unknown.

Why on earth would they call it 5x5 when it isn't 5x5? it's not even a square.

I wonder if it will do as badly as BTX (which would have helped Intel with higher TDP Pentium 4 parts)?

I think gimped is a more suitable name as its got what appears to be 2 lots of ports removed from the rear.

If this was socket for amd apus tho...

Broadwell beats any and all amd APUs right now though, future skylake processors with iris pro 6200 will as well.

and it will run hot, because even now U series cpu's in nucs struggle.

that still isn't 5x5. This is a company that works with nano-meters. I'd like to assume they don't approximate.

It's a motherboard form factor, not a motherboard. Like ATX or mITX. It won't be long until motherboard OEMs start making 5x5 boards with the FM2+ socket. Also, the Broadwell iGPU benchmarks higher than the one on the A10-7850K.

Thought it was a super great idea for a NAS, and then i saw it only has 1 SATA port on it and its missing the PCI-E to toss in a Raid card... Ill stick with my nuc under my tv because its so power efficient, this seems like its got all the problems of a small board, but all of the problems of a big cpu.

 

I guess at least with Skylake it will have a decent graphics chip in there, but that necessitates that you have a decent cooler on there, which seems kinda backwards.
