based on clocks alone, this should be a competitor to GigaByte's 980Ti G1

ASUS' 980Ti STRIX has higher boost core clock and VRAM freq; but looks like the price will be higher too

The new ASUS STRIX GTX 980 Ti Gaming card hasn't shown up on amazon yet, but it should be available soon for what I would expect to be around $699.

We can't Benchmark like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to shove more GPUs in your computer. Like the time I needed to NV-Link, because I needed a higher HeavenBench score, so I did an SLI, which is what they called NV-Link back in the day. So, I decided to put two GPUs in my computer, which was the style at the time. Now, to add another GPU to your computer, costs a new PSU. Now in those days PSUs said OCZ on them, "Gimme 750W OCZs for an SLI" you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was that I had two GPUs in my rig, which was the style at the time! They didn't have RGB PSUs at the time, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big green ones.

I just got the 980ti from EVGA with their ACX 2.0 cooler. Thing overclocks like a beast and barely hits 60℃ at 1450 MHz. Considering this DCU III cooler (and the gigabyte G1's too) is significantly bigger than the ACX 2.0 cooler, I'm thinking this card and it's huge cooler is a bit overkill for this chip...

It appears to be using a Matrix PCB, so the cooler isn't overkill at all, users would most likely be able to push this card past 1500 on the stock cooler with added voltage.

Looks to be a great card and my pick if it stays between $680 and $700. I'm holding off (missing holiday sale deals on other parts) until I see the USD retail price. The only think that looks strange is the backplate with the opening in the middle. My personal preference would be to use a ROG motherboard to carry on the red/black brand theme and quality standard in a PC case with large enough card headroom and good airflow to the 3 fans. So that will make me choose probably an mATX case instead of mITX even though I will only be running one GPU. I'm worried about the 'popular' mITX case I had wanted because of the 3 fans vs a reference blower design.

 

Dimensions:

  • ASUS STRIX GTX 980 Ti DirectCU III w/Backplate 305 x 152 x 40 mm (W x H x D) - price unverified
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti (Reference Cooler) 267 x 111 x 38 mm (W x H x D) - $650

So it's about 2mm thicker than the reference model. Would that matter much is a semi-small case like the Phanteks Evolv ITX, resting 2mm closer to the perforated PSU shroud for enough intake airflow?

That card is gigantic. It's over 30 cm long, making it 50% longer than a Fury X :lol:  :lol:  :lol:
