Unreal Engine 4 is now free

Rafy

So it looks like this announcement happened without it being noticed. Here is the jist of it:

Unreal Engine 4 is now available to everyone for free, and all future updates will be free!

You can download the engine and use it for everything from game development, education, architecture, and visualization to VR, film and animation. When you ship a game or application, you pay a 5% royalty on gross revenue after the first $3,000 per product, per quarter. It’s a simple arrangement in which we succeed only when you succeed.

The source, Marketplace and support will still be fully available in the free version.

For those of you who have been with us for the last year, thank you! With your input and participation, we’ve worked insanely hard to make the engine better, more useable and more powerful, releasing 7 major updates and more than a dozen minor updates.

In going free, we’ll be issuing a pro-rated refund to current subscribers for their most recent month’s payment. And, everyone who has ever paid for a UE4 subscription will receive a $30 credit that can be spent in the Unreal Engine Marketplace.

Current subs will be getting a full refund for their latest month of subscription along with a 30$ voucher for use in the marketplace for anyone that ever subscribed.

Beyond the tools and source, Unreal Engine 4 provides an entire ecosystem. Chat in the forums, add to the wiki, participate in the AnswerHub Q&A, and join collaborative development projects via GitHub. Buy content in the Marketplace, or build your own and sell it there.

To help you get started, the engine includes a large number of video tutorials and documentation, as well as ready-made game templates, samples, and content.

I just got the press release a few minutes ago.

yay i can play around with unreal, :D

after all the only reason i have but off playing around with game development is because the engines cost money (note i know other software required is costly as well but i have access to alot of software from uni)

Omg this just made building my 3d building with my team a whole lot easier.

Still annoyed they changed the layout in 4.7 though.

What's surprise me more is that they also made the source code available in the free version, so any dev can tweak it for their needs, this rekts unity on all levels unless you want to male a simple game like 2D games

this is one of the greatest thing that has happened to me recently, and it happened on this forum, those involved have my eternal gratitude http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/198850-update-alex-got-his-moto-g2-lets-get-a-moto-g-for-alexgoeshigh-unofficial/ :')

i use to have the second best link in the world here, but it died ;_; its a 404 now but it will always be here

I though that 19$/Month + 5% Royalities was good enough, but free is even more awesome. I payed for Unreal for three months and this is awesome.

Epis also has a no-strings-attached-fund for UE4 projects that only has to be in working prototype stage

My team and I just cheated a bit and payed for once month then used it for like 3 before paying again to update.

Didn't they always do it so that you could pay once and then un-subscribe and still use what you got? You wouldn't be able to get updates but nothing stopped you from using what you got.

Anyhow, it also nice that they offer some store-credit for customers who already payed for it.

Does the Epic Games Launcher work for you guys? It won't connect to their servers for me.

Funny thing is he was pronouncing it right until one day he did not... Plus my name is really simple.
