Interesting point from LTT's review with an update to NVENC. There might be a "great for streaming" use case with the 2080. I imagine that'll develop in time. For now, everyone is testing games & complaining about 2 months of PR that they can't even test.

It sounds like 7nm TSMC stuff is already being taped out. I'm guessing Ryzen 3 drops next year Q1 on 7nm so I wouldn't be surprised for stuff to drop mid next year.

Though, obviously, all the fun of "capture/compression/decompression" issues, the DLSS and TAA look a little different. Lighting gets changed around a little bit and the DLSS is less sharp in the foreground. Which means it's a slightly better (or offloaded) upscaler, technology much more useful on the 2060 series.

It's good technology, but Nvidia seems to have oversold it. It's a trade off a minimal visual quality for massive performance, which would be much better in their xx60 series products. However, they're not going to get it there. 

 

The real key would be to compare it to an in-game resolution scaler and note the difference, in visual & performance. Being able to offload tasks onto the Tensor Cores is just outright valuable in the first place.

Navi may be Q2 2019, but Ryzen 3rd Gen is at least in the 2nd half of 2019. It's going to be a bit. AMD's wafer space at TSMC is going to those Rome parts for a while. The one tapeout at GloFo that has to be moved was the 7nm APU, more then likely. AMD lags their APUs a cycle behind their Mainstream parts, mostly due to the GPU side of the equation, I assume.

They won't be in the SM design. They can't push that type of volume on the size of chip that they would need.

Why get a 2080 instead? Unless the RTX cards get optimized later, the 1080ti is on par or better with more vram.

RTX 2080 is crap because GTX 1080Ti is noticeably cheaper and performance difference is only 1%.

 

Put the RTX 2080 to it's price/performance place and that's will happen easily! I am very proud of those idiots who pre ordered these RTX GPU's.

lmao. double lmao to those that pre-orders for >$1.2k. by the time we get a good quality ray tracing games this card gonna be obsolete.. like just over a year later.

DLSS will help the 2080, in theory, do ultra-high refresh gaming a lot easier for a minor visual quality loss, but, as I said in the thread, this tech makes a lot more sense in the xx60 GPUs.

I've watched 4-5 different reviews already, and here's my personal opinion after watching all of them, summed up in one word.

Meh

I mean, let's be honest with ourselves for a bit. If you don't count the price, the 2080 and 2080 Ti are solid GPUs. They make a solid improvement over their predecessors and especially the 2080 Ti is an absolute beast at 3840x2160, pretty much being the ideal choice for those who want to play games at that resolution beyond 60FPS.

 

Those people will have to pay a pretty penny, however. Given that you'll be more likely to buy an RTX 2080 Ti at $1199, that represents around a 70% increase in price for around a 35%-ish performance bump, which already is pretty bad value. This gets even worse when you plop in the RTX 2080, which is at best equivalent to a GTX 1080 Ti and at worst, 9% slower, at $100 more (not counting AIB partner prices, which are going to add onto that).

 

Basically, you really have to bank on both RTX ray-tracing and DLSS to really get your money's worth, except they won't be available until October. So that already puts a dampener on things.

 

I honestly don't know what to say but I'll probably sum it up with this.

• Buy the 2080 Ti if you already spent mega on a 4K 144Hz monitor and need a GPU that's best to pair it up with. If you can afford that expensive-ass monitor, I don't think a 2080 Ti should be much of an issue.
• Don't bother with the 2080 unless you're a certain Avram Piltch and you can't live without ray tracing. Buy the GTX 1080 Ti instead, which will be cheaper

It'll depend on wafer costs, I imagine, for when Nvidia will switch. Though it's really a question of "early 2020 or late 2020?". Nvidia should bring out the Volta successor, on 7nm, in the middle of 2019, even if it's little more than a die shrink. Even on a mature process, yielding >700 mm² dies is quite the "ask", with low yields. That'd be the thing that drives Nvidia into its next generation of cards, as AMD probably doesn't get back into the high-end until 2021.
