Alberta scientists develop memory potentially exceeding hard drive capacity 1,000-fold

NTDaws

University of Alberta scientists say they’ve created the most dense, solid-state hard drive in history, one that could exceed the capabilities of current hard drives by 1,000 times.

“Essentially, you can take all 45 million songs on iTunes and store them on the surface of one quarter,” said Roshan Achal, a PhD student in the department of physics.

The individuals are looking to release there memory within 5 to 10 years when the time is right, the goal at this time is to increase read/write speeds.

I feel like we won't see the ability to store data consumerly for a long time. This could possibly replace that meanwhile.

Please be respectful of mine and others posts, there is no given reason to object in a disrespectful manner.

The team of scientists said the next steps will be increasing readout and writing speeds, which will allow for more flexible applications.

Well that makes me really wonder how slow this stuff is

Great post.

I've no idea what kind of memory it is, but I know the ugly mugs of its inventors.

Everytime I see an ad(s) or news for storage devices and use pictures, or songs(MP3) for metric somehow I couldn't take it seriously, and that was an ads

But when the actual scientist doing it? Really? why not just say how much it actually store or give the actual datasheet.

Read this when I woke up, interesting. Unfortunately I don't think we'll see it come to fruition for a long time, mostly because if you leapfrog that much ahead, where's the profit?

Just another reason the world would be so much better off if we dropped the whole capitalist society. Profit profit profit.

After all, it's been many years since I read about removing a layer in the LCD panel to drastically increase battery life. Simple. Did it ever appear? Nope.

I don't doubt we'll see this technology, but it'll be in 20 years once they've milked everything in between.

Most memory advancements are slow when they're still in the very, very early research phases ;)

2. Patented and buried

3. Both

Not feasible why?

You're reading a post from a news agency. It's put in terms like that so that common people have a better grasp of how much storage it is.

It's not a research paper.

Is quantum entanglement feasible for mass market, even if limited to industrial use?

And game engine graphics tech demos. No game has yet matched the best tech demos from 10 years ago.

Not saying it isn't feasible. If it is, that's where point #2 becomes reality.

I have no idea what that is, but I'm going to go with what I usually say; perhaps not now, but there's always room for advancement in the future.

It's foolish to think anything isn't going to be one day feasible for mass market. Just takes someone to put in the work, or a breakthrough.

Toasters playing league of legends load faster than these disks will. And by toasters I'm not referring to the gamer term for low specs PC's, I'm talking dual slot toasters burning either 1's or 0's into the sides of bread and the information being read from those on a conveyor belt...

Call me when we have feasable 100TB of silicon transistor perma storage memory for <1000$ running at 4Ghz linked directly to the cpu, you will no longer need to load programs into RAM, because ram will not exist anymore, everything will be already loaded in a fast silicon memory.

No point in storing 100TB per cmm square if it doesnt have ludicrous access speed/bandwith/latency, maybe usefull for long term storage of non common data like old logs, video logs from security cameras and so on.

what year is it? when will we stop measuring data capacity in itunes songs? that alone show that who wrote or said that is totally out o the loop and makes me question their know-how.

this ridiculous i remeber when cd's were pretty new thing and labeled with how many minutes o music they could hold.

you know what actually that sound fun. from now on ill only refer to capacity by comparison to other things.

my ssd can hold 45,3 bluray movies and my phone can hold roughly 60000 whatsapp messages

also my car uses 1840 tea spoons of gas per 100 km and my bank account holds about 3,5 macbook pros

also im 1.8 "6 year olds" tall
