Apple iOS 11.3 updated leaves some repaired iPhone 8 devices without touch functionality

Source 1: http://www.news.com.au/technology/gadgets/mobile-phones/feature-in-apples-latest-software-update-is-reportedly-causing-grief-for-iphone-8-owners/news-story/2988a3eca031109c4f000decf4cdde3a

Source 2: https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/59jwvz/iphone-8-aftermarket-touchscreens-ios-update

  • Many iPhone 8 owners have found their touchscreens no longer work after updating to iOS 11.3

  • This issue affects phones that have had their screens replaced with aftermarket displays - i.e., not repaired by an Apple authorized facility

  • Issue is believed to be because of incompatibility a small chip that controls the screen and the aftermarket displays

  • Apple has a long history of discouraging third-party repairs and the recent battery fiasco also has some folks up in arms about this new issue, but it’s also entirely possible that this is just an accidental bug with the software

  • iFixit is currently trying to correct this issue on their replacement displays: https://ifixit.org/blog/9917/11-3-update-breaking-iphone-screens/

California the latest state to explore net neutrality protection after FCC repeal

Source 1: http://www.latimes.com/business/hiltzik/la-fi-hiltzik-net-neutrality-california-20180420-story.html

Source 2: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2018/04/nations-toughest-net-neutrality-bill-passes-california-senate-committee/

  • The California legislature is attempting to restore net neutrality provisions similar to the ones used by the FCC before their recent repeal

  • However, in addition to prohibiting “fast lanes,” throttling, blocking, and paid prioritization, it goes a step farther to prohibit “zero rating,” which is when use of a certain site (such as Netflix) doesn’t count against a user’s data cap

  • ISPs say zero rating is consumer friendly but net neutrality advocates believe this is just another form of preference toward certain sites and services

  • The bill needs to be passed by the California legislature and signed by Governor Brown - both chambers and the governor’s mansion are controlled by Democrats who have traditionally been more friendly toward net neutrality

  • ISPs are opposing the bill and may challenge it in court if it’s signed into law - may try and argue federal preemption and/or that the bill unduly burdens interstate commerce

Google Chat set to rival iMessage and displace SMS

Source 1: http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-43836504

Source 2: https://www.tomsguide.com/us/google-chat-rcs-faq,news-27024.html

  • Google wants to replace SMS on Android phones with a service simply called Chat through the Android Messages app

  • Based on a new standard called RCS (Rich Communication Services)

  • Supports video, read receipts, and higher-res images

  • Mobile networks will have to opt-in. If a recipient doesn’t have Chat, the message will still be sent over SMS

  • Other apps, such as Samsung’s messaging app, will support Chat

ASUS AREZ

“The speculation is now over as ASUS announced its strong working partnership with AMD through the development of AREZ (derived from Ares, the Greek God of War) processors and software. There is some information about the AREZ graphic cards below and I’ve also attached the news release as well.”

This is in response to NVIDIA’s partner program, which involves NVIDIA paying AIB partners to only use NVIDIA GPUs in their graphics cards

AREZ is a new ASUS sub-brand just for AMD cards - is ASUS not interested in joining the partner program? Not just some new cards with AMD chips, but an entirely new branding scheme

  • US has recently banned American companies from selling parts or software to ZTE, which is based in China, after ZTE illegally shipped phones to Iran and North Korea that contained American parts - these countries are subject to US sanctions

  • Huge problem for ZTE as they depend heavily on American-made parts, such as Qualcomm chips

  • They may still be able to come to some kind of understanding with the US, but relations between ZTE and the US government were already soured after ZTE, along with Huawei, were called out by some members of the US Congress due to concern their phones might help China spy on the US

Apple might finally allow third-party Watch face support

  • Apple is notorious for keeping their device interfaces consistent, so this is somewhat surprising

  • News was uncovered when a log message hinting at third-party watch faces was discovered in a watchOS update

  • Although this appears to be related to watch faces only, and not other device functionality, it could bring a lot more choice to the experience of looking at your wrist

That that sucks about mug shots, its a guilty until proven innocent system isnt it. Especially road side bans and tows. Instant license suspension and they tow your vehicle away just on a wim, no court to determine it until months down the road, then you are innocent and you get no refund of tow, cab money, lose job.

Just like that gang banger who got released because it took to long to go to trial. After 50+ months in the hole. Wherever he is living aint safe. I think the government should be sued and sued heavily, but Britain has its own laws, but governments in general dont care about nothing, they just overspend on useless things and cutting back on others. Sometimes it makes my blood boil, but I have learnt to ignore it as much as possible. Innocent people should 110% have every trace of their court system experience DELETED, mug shots, filings, disclosure EVERYTHING. Should be done IMMEDIATELY. What a shame governments have become, its an utter shame.

Netflix has a show, about Britain High Court officers. They show up and you have an hour to pack and leave the premises. If you owe money, they show up and seize everything in sight to pay the debt, like lock the tire of your room mates car to scare ya into paying whether its old rent, contract. They will take your couch. So I understand its a different system but by golly they are innocent people with mug shots.

We're not talking about brand name stuff, to be clear.

Disagree all you want, but if it's not stolen, it's a commodity item, made of commodity metal.

If it's really cheap, it's probably impure/fake. If it's a LITTLE bit cheap, then maybe the vendor can take slightly lower margin. But I've yet to see it make much difference.

So I checked out the Madrinas Coffee, one of the sponsor for this WAN show. The shipping is a whopping 11 dollars to ship in the USA. With half off LINUS code, the total comes to $20.50

LINUS.JPG.faa66587c13fd5414eee8f0cad3c7681.JPG

I found out their free shipping code "SHIP4FREE" and the total became $19.00

I mean I don't mind spending extra $1.5 for supporting Linus, but... to think that we are actually getting worse deal then everyone else for supporting Linus feels kinda bad.

This sounds concerning. iMessage and WhatsApp don't need carrier support.

It might be, that it's because it's only over the carrier's network, menaning that you can't use it over Wi-Fi, so you'll have to pay for it even if you have Wi-Fi.

This is what happened for me with Savage Jerky... So I didn't use the LTT code because it was already expensive to bring into Canada. At the time there was the football promo for 15% which got me a better deal, not much but when you add additional costs for conversion etc every penny saved is still a penny in my pocket. Maybe with the new help @CPotter could get a better deal for us? Because it's sad when the same sites offer better codes almost yearly compared to the ones being offered to us, it doesn't look too good on either end as they are not offering the best deal to LMG nor are you offering the best/equal deal to us.

Also shipping outside of the USA for cans is really, really (did I mention really?) stupid...

It is literally cheaper to buy off of amazon...

I know for the coffee nothing can be done, but for Canadians maybe just maybe put in amazon links instead for the cold drinks?

Also I would buy something from Madrinas but one of the items I would like to try is out of stock :S

I'm watching the WAN Show right now and, if I understood correctly, Linus suggested that the motherboard, RAM, and CPU, aren't the same. I'll be interested to see how that plays out. I don't know what model he has, but the newer Macbooks that I have personally opened up for repair (which is a small number, maybe 5 or 6) have all those last components soldered onto the board. I've never opened an iMac (any model). If any of those are removable I'll be surprised. I don't know either way, it just seems unlikely.

But unless Apple is selling at a loss, there's no way that the parts are more than the cost of an iMac Pro.

Make sure to quote or tag me (@JoostinOnline) or I won't see your response!

I would caution about saying iMessage is 'totally' secure. It does have E2E encryption but with iCloud sync integration on the way that could impact the security since Apple has the decryption keys of your iCloud account and is willing to share that to those that ask.

On android you can seamlessly replace the default SMS app with Signal and that acts like iMessage since it can handle signal messages with signal users and regular SMS. Granted it's not as feature-filled as something like whatsapp.

The issue with RCS is that the carriers will not be willing to implement strong security in to their implementations so they're no more secure than SMS (especially when it comes to 2factor)

Please tell me you're being sarcastic.  That man ranted like a mental patient for nearly 2 hours over misinformation.  The point Linus was making is that they should have parts available to fix it, at the customer's expense that is, but they don't.  Apple's response to any device breaking is, "Buy a new one!"  They intentionally do this for profit hence why people go to Rossman.  He gives a diagnostic for free then goes over the actual costs of parts and labor.  Apple, on the other hand, will tell you to buy a new device because that makes them more money.  So, even though Linus would be willing to pay for the repair, Apple wants him to spend more money for a new one.  Imagine if the client wasn't a techie.  Apple would give them a shit eating grin then say, "Sorry, we don't make parts to fix it.  Buy a new one!  Ya, the damage seems minimal...buy a new one...do it!"  <--This basically means they have snake oil salesmen over an actual repair department.  Do you see the problem with this?  One of the many reasons why I usually avoid Apple products.  Yet, this guy rants in support of Apple being dicks.  FFS, I dropped my GBA and Nintendo gave me quote for a new screen.  Apple, "Ya, buy a new device!"  No, it's not about costs it's about Apple refusing to repair let alone make the parts forcing you to buy a new device because that gets the more money.  Apple is notoriously anti-consumer(this bs), anti-government(tax-dodging), anti-repair(this bs and the lawsuits again), and anti-creativity(because sales over a useful device are more important).  That last one is another reason why Woz left.

I know Apple is anti-repair and such, but this isn't surprising.  Honestly, if I bought a closed system device I would check for "repairability" if I needed to fix it for cheap/ upgrade it myself. My iPad for example, I have Apple Care on it because I know they can be a pain to fix (didn't plan on opening it anyway) and also I have a data plan that I pay monthly on it. Anyway when I bought my Helios 300, I almost went and bought a Macbook, but didn't because of its lack repairability (I may buy a Mac for Development work at some point though) and bought the Helios because I know it is "easy" to upgrade and fix. Also that man is Eli the Computer Guy who has worked in the IT bussiness for many years (he even uses Macs himself). Is some of his opinion out there? Yes.

Linus's best bet is to part out the system, sell the cpu, the memory, the ssds (if not soldered), and maybe the chassis. For the mainboard, psu, and gpu he may be able to sell but he may just have to cut his loses. Anyway, if he was able to put that system back together and if I was someone that was looking to buy it I would not because it no longer has a warranty.

Hey Linus,

I happen to work for a 3rd party Apple Authorized dealer and have been following your iMac ordeal. I wasn't sure if you guys had been given the actual price of the parts 3rd parties sell at so i thought you might want to know since you think Apple will sell there parts under the cost of the system. I'm not sure the exact config of your iMac so i assumed the best you can get, this is our price to purchase those parts. keep in mind, these are OUR stock prices before markup which in some cases we aren't allowed too markup... from what I've been told by friends, Apple store's aren't much different in price when it comes to stock orders.

image.png.6d120cb3651befdc3b0eca5b3cf65ed3.png

As for 3rd Party dealers, we are also pretty limited in terms of what we are allowed to do when it comes to something like this. Since it was not opened by an authorized tech, i would have had to turn it away as well.

Hope this helps.

If you need/want anymore information, email me.

Is the YouTube Linus talks about Barnacules Nerdgasm? I mean, I know he does have a lot of health conditions that hold him back but it is the first name that comes to mind when you say 'would be a lot bigger if you made more videos' which is basically what Linus said
