Intel reportedly shutting down its smart glasses group

Today is a tragic day for Intel and all you Intel smart glasses lovers out there. Intel are shutting down their smart glasses group after a tiny 5 years in service, according to CNET.

The chip giant will shut down its new devices group, according to a report Wednesday by The Information. The division, formed in 2013, made fitness trackers and smart glasses.

The division had reportedly been quietly working on the Vaunt smart glasses, which it planned to offer to developers in an early access program later this year. The normal-looking glasses were said to combine a very low-power red laser and a holographic reflector to beam simple images directly onto a user's retina.

Such a shame. I think it would have been great to see the Vaunt smart glasses appear to the consumer eye, quite literally. And I'm sure most of you guys and gals out there feel the same way too. But, we must move on.

"Intel is continuously working on new technologies and experiences. Not all of these develop into a product we choose to take to market," Intel said in a statement. "The Superlight project [aka Vaunt] is a great example where Intel developed truly differentiated, consumer augmented reality glasses. We are going to take a disciplined approach as we keep inventing and exploring new technologies, which will sometimes require tough choices when market dynamics don't support further investment."

Perhaps the wonder of the Vaunt glasses is now just a star in our very eyes, but rest assured we can look forward to other exciting goodies from Intel, such as the highly anticipated Ice Lake series of CPU's due for release later on this year or earlier in 2019. I suppose the smart glasses market was never great, after all, Google Glass, Snapchat Spectacles and Hololens never took off very well either.

As a reader I'm sure it's really no surprise Intel closed down their smart glasses group after their wearables division got axes last July. Maybe Intel wasn't cut out for many things- other than CPUs, integrated graphics and NUC's of course. So how do you guys feel about the loss of the Intel smart glasses group? and nothing of value was lost. smart glasses are such a niche product as they are now and will be for a long time.

tbh I understand why they did this ( if a department is sucking up alot of money if you cut it, it makes you look better and more attractive to investors same reason why Go Pro cut its Drone division after the fail of the Go Pro drone )
