Man, that sure is a warm running drive. Is that one of those slimline drives?

Nope. Its one of Seagate's 7200.7 desktop drives, and the SATA versions were always hotter+louder than the IDE version (as well as the 7200.9 series). And that's excusable for a HDD that came out of a desktop with a Pentium 4 540J which was dated September 2003.

Edit: If the weather was cooler I'd be running it in RAID 0 with the second one-which wasn't plugged in the original machine due to it having to rely on molex to SATA adapters.

Ah, ok. I have a few of the slimline Seagate drives and they get ridiculously hot.

Q8400 2.66 GHz, ASUS P5G41C-M LX, ASUS Strix 960 OC, 8GB Corsair Vengeance RAM. Two monitors - one Sony SDH-HS95 and one Samsung 40" 4K TV @30 fps.

I can play Dead Space 3 and similarly "aging" games in 4K 3840x2160 with no problems. Fallout 4 is OK at slightly lower 4K resolutions and high settings or 1080p and Ultra settings. X-COM2 can only be played on absolute minimum settings. GPU Tweak 2 OC's the GPU to 102 percent with a clock of 1406 MHz and a max temp of 72. Given that the ambient temperature here can reach 40 C in the shade, not bad.

Will upgrade to 8700K with all the bells and whistles. But for now this Q8400 is solid and can make any i3 and some i5s blush.

I didn't build this, or dust it much either lol.

The most 'retro' computer parts I have are a couple (4; 3 of the first type, 1 of the last type) S3 ViRGE display adapters. I believe my uncle harvested them from scrap PCs for some reason. They all work the last time I tested them (almost five years ago now). I have a lot of old DIMMs and hard drives from the '90s as well.

Maxtor D740x-6L are worse however-you don't want to run them for any period of time without active cooling, or on days around 30oC and hotter.

I've got a board that could run that Pentium as well as that 586...in fact I can run any CPU from Sockets 5 through Super 7 on it due to the wide voltage support, and it not needing a microcode update for every single CPU (it even supports setting the FSB to 140MHz...not that it would work). BTW, please kill the A6 4400M with fire-the world is better off with less Trinity (an A8 4555M ruined my laptop-it runs worse than i5 U that are 2-3 years older and clocked 300-600MHz lower)

I'd love one at or under 200MHz-I've got some games with the Pascal bug that prevent them from running on any CPU clocked higher than 200MHz (which is why the last time I played some was on a 486 well over 14 years ago-though my tablet and desktop both do a solid job of emulating Dark Ages).

I actually used to have a 233MHz Pentium MMX.  Bought for $10 at a flea market in New Jersey back in 2004.  It made a nice upgrade for my Gateway 2000 E-1000.

First of all, you quoted a post going on 4 years old, and he said that he didn't have anything old because of his age, and then you come barreling in saying that you have a cheap i5 at 13...

talk about over paying... that chip is not worth that. id give maybe €50? tops.

anyway didnt think about this thread being a thing so time to go dig up and photograph my CPU collection, some old motherboards and some other random tech shit i have from the early 2000s and late 90s

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

i got a LOT of stuff, my CPU collection has quite a few entries, might have one or two duplicates but that should be it. but it dosent matter because 80% of it are P4s and everyone hates them and they are literally worthless. anyway i have a few interesting ones among them too. first off a picture of all of my pentium 4s, my Pentium 3 600EB and my two PGA478 Celerons:

DSC_0039.thumb.PNG.7b13112dc939c3d44277ce3d086129c7.PNG

i have 3 diffrent LGA775 P4s, well 4 but that one comes in a later picture, and they all share a coupple of things. like sucking compleae ass. they are so, SOOO bad. i also have a pentium D but i sold my only board compatible with it i think so i have never experienced how utterly shit that is because thats two P4s with glue... you will notice something interesting here though, the bottom row are delided, they are four diffrent pentium 4s for PGA478 that i have delided here are some closeups:

DSC_0040.thumb.PNG.94d8ac23c9056063722b42ca1ca83b28.PNG

DSC_0041.thumb.PNG.8fd798391515c8760b2ebf7bdf1d988d.PNG

the one thats second from the left is the ONLY ONE that is soldered, PGA478 were mainly pasted chips from what i can see but once they moved on to a new node in 2004 they moved to solder because the die was too small or something. here are my laptop chips, not all of them, but the ones i think are P4s...

DSC_0043.thumb.PNG.e77339458d1a966a7608dc2cca6ad564.PNG

again a lot of diffrent chips from everything from 2000 to 2004 or so, dont remember when the latest one is but i have an I3 2somethingsomething too thats not on picture too but thats a mobile chip. here is the "thermal paste box" which is actiually full of old DDR and DDR2 RAM:

DSC_0044.thumb.PNG.7fd42143d2e623ec73a1ee56b6255cad.PNG

oh and a firewire card and some fan adapters too lol. now onto some motherboards:

DSC_0046.thumb.PNG.e707fba52b6af533b5e0741b8cd1f55f.PNG

two proprietairy PGA478 boards, the large one out of a dell server. used to have a pentium 3 in it IIRC and the case and cooler were pretty cool(pun intended) but LTT has an upload limit so no pictures of that. the  second board comes out of the case i built the LAN PC 5.0 in actiually. neither have been used by me because i havent really had any interest and they both use AGP GPUs only... next board:

DSC_0047.thumb.PNG.4a6244c02a6282aa2ae0debd0a110690.PNG

the blue "beast"(more like compleate shitstain on the face of the planet) comes out of an old Fujitsu machine that dosent seem to have sold well and this seems to be the one and only blue example of the board, searching for it online only comes up with green ones with identical layouts into every detail, so its the same board but just with a diffrent soldermask lol. anyway this is a LGA775 board which only supports P4s and Celerons, in it is a P4 which has been lapped by some moron and is scratched to hell and a total of TWO ENTIRE GIGABYTES!!!!! of DDR RAM. yep not DDR2, just plain old DDR... at least they are sammy sticks i guess? :P

*edited in*

the Toaster guts, like the old ones:

DSC_0045.thumb.PNG.91aeb26158eef205c8bac72e4e76ec75.PNG

has one of my absolute favorite GPUs in it, an FX5500. why is it my fave you ask? because it overclocks like a BEAST and draws little to no power. plays NSFU2 really well paired with the 3.2GHz LGA478 P4 in it and the 2GB of RAM lol

to end it all off these two fun things:

DSC_0048.thumb.PNG.7373e380af51fec83ce7029afa2694ff.PNG

DSC_0051.thumb.PNG.b77cf415fbc58004d32fc038202ce3de.PNG

an iOmega Jaz and a Facit electromechanical calculator. the calculator weighs an absolute fucking tonne and i cant bother moveing it, so it just sits under a protective cover so it wont discolor more then it has, and the Jaz drive i will never use but i got all the cables and shit for it if anyone in Sweden thinks they will lol

thats most of my collection of stuff i have, i sold all my AM3 stuff, and sandybridge and up i cant say i consider old enough for this thread but i sold most of that stuff too.

a few mentions that didnt get to show up here that are in my collection:

Creative SoundBlaster Audogy ZS Platinum eX - used to be my soundcard before i got my soundblaster Z, made in like 2005 or something but still pretty solid

I3 530 - forgot to pull it out basically, never used, got it for the board it came with so i could put the amazing I5 680 i had in it for the LAN PC 3.0

I3 2120 - sandy and up arent especially old if you ask me, so it didnt get a picture

I5 4690K - almost got on picture with the laptop chips, but its like, really really not old so thats not really worthy of this thread again

my harddrive collection - compleatly forgot it existed untill i just now looked over too it. has some real gems so if people want to see it il post it i guess

think thats about it, you are one hell of a dedicated little person if you botherd to read all this so congratz lol

HNNNNNGGGGG THOSE OLD XMS2S #XMS2Gang

Sadly tho my sticks are only 1GB each, so my plans of a nice ASUS 775 board with 4 slots and 8GB of the stuff are fairly hopeless.

Oh, my god... This thread is tech p0rn!

Wait until I dig out my pile of old junk! Too bad I scrapped my 386 era parts... ISA card with ram on it... something like 4Mb or so !

I still have my AMD k7 rig... It still runs fine and is used as a Dj and animation station from time to time... runs on linux to be able to run smooth but was running win7 for some time.

I have piles among piles of old computer parts laying around... will be fun to dig in...

A little teaser here... Some of my first videocards from the AGP era:

If it has been done before, I can do it...

If it has never been done, just leave me some time to find a way!

Oh.. and I have to ask my mom if she still has her Windows 97 upgrade CD (you read right... windows 97!)

This version of windows was so crappy that it never made it to the shelf... People who own them got them the same way we did... Bundled with a PC (Pentium 100 in our case).

The PC shipped with windows 95 installed and a free update copy of windows 97... It was sooo bad that anyone who had this disk could return it to Microsoft and get a free copy of windows 98.

If it has been done before, I can do it...

If it has never been done, just leave me some time to find a way!

You have no clue how much I could use that DDR2. I have SO MANY SYSTEMS that use it, and never enough.

There are like 4 sticks, the rest is DDR lol

They sadly seem to be broken, but I haven't tried them since I built the first LAN PC. It had a bunch of problems that just went away when I swapped the sticks :(

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

#1. Treat others as you would like to be treated.

#2. It's best to keep your mouth shut; and appear to be stupid, rather than open it and remove all doubt.

#3. There is nothing "wrong" with being wrong. Learning from a mistake can be more valuable than not making one in the first place.
