The good ol SoundBlaster 16 uses an OPL3 sound chip (AFAIK basically a slightly better OPL2 design), and both PCI and ISA versions of those go really cheap on eBay.

Sweet. Now I just need to keep an eye out for them :P After I complete my 4 current projects next will be to get a 486/386 etc based system but that will be a while considering they can go for quite a bit.

hmmm Kinda makes sense to do SE as i current;y have a 16MB gpu in it so if I went to XP i'd want to upgrade that to a 32 or 64 MB card. Don't have any systems yet with ISA ports sadly. Hopefully in a few months I can find a good Pentium system once I have more cash to spend. Currently my favourite PCI card is the Sound Blaster Live with the EMU10k1 chip. Sadly I only have 2 right now, Didn't know Yamaha made sound cards. I will definitely we keeping an eye out for them. How much do you think one is worth?

I don't actually know, since my experience with Yamaha is through my Coppermine capable Intel SE440BX-2. The sound however at least with the integrated version is better than that of my Live Value (still not sure which revision-its got more connectors than any other Live Value).

Best Yamaha experience I've had is the software synth in my Presario 2286. I honestly prefer the sound it makes over my SB16, and the best part is that since it's software, I don't have to blow my ears out with the amplified and interference-filled rear audio or the hella interference-filled front audio, I can just send it out through my SB128/ :P

Only problem is that the ol' Cyrix chip in it kinda screams when you play more complex MIDIs. :/

Oldest piece of tech I have handily available at the moment is a 9800 GT. Had a pre-built htpc from HP as a kid that was the family PC (Shared).

I did a bit of a gaming and my sister's bf ended up recommending the card and adding it in I believe. Evidently didn't last though as the power draw was too much and there was a spark or something one time during use and it was removed ever since. I never even knew it existed until like 2015 when my laptop crapped itself and I was trying to figure something out, my sister ended up mentioning it. Didn't actually use it though, the pre-built's PSU wasn't capable. All I played at the time was pretty much Team Fortress 2 and Counter Strike Source not too much later. Don't think I really needed the graphics card?

So, it's just collecting dust on my desk at the moment. Still have the HTPC as well, lol. (Collecting dust underneath the desk). Just posting the graphics card though.

ZDjFQX1.jpg

Wonder if it still works... would be good for a budget HTPC w/ no integrated graphics I'd imagine?

Yea it would be I keep my old one laying around as a spare. Might get some hdmi drm issues though, and the 512mb version is kinda useless even in the os these days.

Silent build - You know your pc is too loud when the deaf complain. Windows 98 gaming build, smells like beige

Even with a good adapter? VGA/DVI (Whatever connector is on the card...) > HDMI.

Guess could always add a splitter to the mix to do the handshaking (DRM). I think some people use them for that purpose, like for old TVs that have HDMI 1.0 but they have a HDMI 1.4 Blu Ray Player or whatever for example.

I really need to start collecting Socket 5-S7 CPU, since I can run all of them off 1 motherboard regardless of the boards' BIOS version. And I also need a Geforce 6200A with an external power connector (or a 6600) to go with the board.

There was no manufacturer name or model number anywhere on this card. I had to search one of the random SN on the back to find out what this is. It's a GeForce 6200 (AGP old-school PCI (thanks @tmcclelland455 ;) ))
