Others don't know and will throw it out  Most of my old stuff i've found at my local thrift store out of pure luck. Now if only a 486 or older system would appear

 

I have yet to really try anything with VIA chipsets but will be soon. Got a thunderbird system i'm working on right now and am considering dual booting 98se and xp, Whats been happening?

With SS7, the Via MPV3 is the best, with S370 it depends on the manufacturer. My Jetway 994 AN-L for example nerfs the performance of CPU that badly, that a PIII 650 on the SE440BX-2 is substantially faster than a PIII 667 on the 994.

Whilst the VP6 (which has the same Northbridge but a better Southbridge) has the same performance at the same clock speed.

So Via is really hit or miss.

Are they one of the 10K RPM models? Or one of the more pedestrian 7200RPM models (since retro/legacy 10K RPM drives even now rival 7200RPM drives in access times....)?

ehehehe Cheetah 146GB  10k versions ftw! When this things raid controller spins them up its an amazing sound lol.

 

What I find really interesting is nearly everything about the case is thumbscrews. Only things that arent are mobo tray, and hard drives/cd/floopy

Apart from the seeking mechanism, they sound a lot like my Maxtor DX740-6L (which are of quantum design)
TBH I'd hate to actually use of the Slugfoot, because even cheap 3.5" HDD were more responsive back then.

Edit: I'll be damned. I've actually got 2x sets of mounting brackets from Maxtor HDD:

The Bigfoot was totally a dog (I had a 7.whatever Fireball and it was leagues faster), but honestly with a faster spindle speed they would have been a bit more competitive (if I'm not mistaken the top-dog TS was a mere 4000RPM).

Ah, the mention of the Fireball LCT. Both the Fireballs I had were LCTs and I kinda miss them too

 

EDIT: Oh god I just saw the Seagate U8. Had one, and the only redeeming factor was the built-in condom.

I have an OLD Pentium 4 machine that I use as a DHCP server back in Mexico. It has a whopping 1GB of SDRAM (8x stock) and a 30GB PATA HDD. Too bad It’s 13000Km away, so no photos here.

I have one of LCT drives (dead). Its been outlasted by the far older 420MB LPS ProDrive.

The condom was nice but the drive was ew. When I got my old ATA IV I looooooved it, and it honestly still spooks me with how quiet they are. Wish mine wouldn't have let out the blue smoke when another drive touched it, and I can't reasonably buy one just because I like them (though I'll make the exception for the Bigfoot TS.

I've also got a couple of ATA IV (1x 20GB, 1x 80GB). And apart from their temperature in cases with poor air flow I was surprised at how quiet they are compared to newer SATA Barracuda 7200.9 (and they feel about as fast as each other).

I had a 40GB, and it ran so hot I slapped a couple little copper (nickel plated) slabs on them and it somehow helped (said heatsinks currently reside on my 7200.9), and honestly I think that it was both faster and without a doubt quieter than my 80GB 7200.9.

took apart an old computer had a pentitum 4, 40 gb hard drive, enogh dust to choke me to death, and old dell 330 watt psu I don't have picks sadly my parents made me throw way the case and I had everything but the fucking side panel of all things in there. If i remember I can take a pic of the side panel.

TBH that wouldn't surprise me. As it is my 5400RPM Samsung Spinpoint HA250JC are faster than both 7200.9. Which shouldn't be the case since they are of a similar age.
