back in early 2012, I upgraded my then defunct AMD rig to a 3770k, h100 v1 AIO water cooler, 16gb of DDR3 Corsair Dominator memory, and a gigabyte sniper 3 motherboard.  Corsair Neutron GTX 240x2 in raid 0 over sata 6gbps.

Managed to score on the silicon lottery, and had it running at 4.6-4.7ghz all year round.  Been working great.

UNFORTUNATELY, this year i decided i needed to upgrade.  So I pretty much parted out my entire rig, picked up an X99 Asus Rampage V Edition 10, 6850k, and 32gb of Corsair Veangeace LED DDR4.  Samsung 960 EVO NVME. Got it all running at 4.2-4.3ghz on AIO water.

I figure it'ds been a solid 5 years so maybe hardware has come a long way.

Yes, the new rig is faster.  Disk IO is great....  overall it feels snappier and improves the experience of using the computer.

However, it really does nothing that the old rig couldn't do.  I mean it renders a little faster.   I kept my 980ti that was in both rigs, and gaming feels the same except for load times.  Having those 2 extra cores really don't mean much unless I'm rendering video.  Perhaps i should have just gotten a PCI-e adapter for an NVME drive and popped it in the 3770k rig.

The best part about getting a new rig is shopping for it and building it.  Afterwards you're left with that shiny box and the vacuum in your wallet and you can't help but think of the money you could have saved by keeping your last rig.

I guess i will try to get 10 years out of this one.

I'm not an expert! In fact I'm usually just 1 google search ahead of you.

It would have to be my old 85MB HDD (WDAC280). Because its only ever had MS DOS+Windows 3.1 on it (a long with a few programs), with everything else being loaded of the FDD (5.25" & 3.5"). Still runs like new, with no damaged sectors (unlike uite a few of my newer HDD ranging up to around 6.4GB-but they saw normal use so it was expected).

My Chieftec!

I like this case so much, it serves me very well, i think i could never get rid of it. It's also rare to find a model like this where i live.

Bonus use: When i drink chimarrão, i can put the thermal bottle on it and fill the cup without spilling or having to reach for it.

Let me guess, originally designed for Pentium 4, and due to that its perfect for newer hardware? Because I've got a case similar to it (smaller, standard ATX, primarily 5.25" drive bays), however it has a support bracket for all PCI/PCIe slots and is completely tool-less. Its also the only post 2000 case that I have which can support a lot of weight on the top of it due to the thickness of its steel.

Nailed it. Made in 2007 but was launched in 2004 (for all i know), weights around 18kg, it has completelly tool-less mounts for 5.25 bays, for 3.5' HDDs, and PCI devices and has support for a redundant PSU.

It also fits Dell and HP server boards due to the way they drilled extra holes on the mounting tray.

So more of a small server case then. Mine seems to have originally been designed as a work station case, but I still can't figure out what back in 2004 (it had a Pentium 4 540J manufactured in 2003) would reuire so many 5.25" bays + PCI/PCIe support brackets.

That's the same exact reason I haven't upgraded my main rig. I only game in 1080p so there's no reason to upgrade, sure I would get more FPS, I'd be able to run more games at max settings and stuff would render faster, but there's just no real point. It does the same stuff, only a little fast. It's not like moving from a Piii 1ghz to a Athlon 64 1.8ghz, or from a Athlon 64 1.8ghz to a Core 2 Duo @ 2.4ghz. Those upgrades were huge leaps that allowed me to do many new things, but going from my Core 2 Quad to my current rig was a good improvement for sure, but it wasn't a leap.

Figured I'd bring this thread back to life some. I have a ton of these. Some are P2's, either 350 or 400 MHz and the rest are P3's. I've never gotten the Pentium 3's to work right though.
