I put this in a status update last night from my Gigabyte GA 5AA (the only SS7 board that works with all socket 5/7/S7 CPU regardless of the BIOS version), and it actually does everything (including web browsing) better than a Celeron 450A. Should probably install a 512MB stick of RAM too (it takes them unlike the ATX version of the board-which also doesn't have the same CPU compatibility):

At least it works with up to 999MB of RAM, and starts up like its on an SSD.....and it it really just 98TE with added features+DOS mode restricted (hence the better stability if you don't use VXD drivers with WDM drivers).

@TheV_Machine
Turns out that the "ESS AudioDrive ES186X Rev98" soundcard was causing the problems I had installing 98SE. It turns out that the salvaged 470uf replacement cap has died and I need to get a new one. I just hope that MagicBoy (which needs DOS mode) has sound with this rig, as under 98SE with a Creative Live Value from around 2000-2001 it didn't have any.

That explains all of those  LGA775 CPU then. I take it most are Pentium 4-because I'm always seeing the damn things in dead/old rigs.

If I'm not mistaken, there's two or three P4s, a Pentium D, Celly D, a pair of low-power Cellys, and a Pentium E5200 in that mess.

I accidentally knocked a capacitor off the back of my 540j after I did my P4 Northwood-Cedarmill comparisons :(
On the plus side, I found out that a P4 HT3.2GHz with DDR 333 matches a P4 540J and 631 with DDR2 800 and DDR2 1066 in performance. Despite having far fewer transistors and being on a far larger node (the power consumption was also very close between all 3)

That pic reminds me ... I'd love to see someone try to cable manage an old (> 8-10 years old) typical case (lacking side panel space), with like 2-4 video cards, 6-8+ IDE drives (maybe a few MFM drives), etc, and make it look as clean as a modern decent case (with plenty of room for cable management) with a base-model GTX 1050 and an M.2 SSD. :P

Are these old enough? xD They actually STILL work - well at least the 80GB sometimes does depending on which cable it's hooked up with and how it's hooked up

Yeah I remember those rounded IDE cables became to fashion some time before people moved to SATA. There used to be sleeved cables where the ribbon cable was just squished together, and cabels that had an actual round rubber covering the 80 individual wires. I had forgotten about those.  Anyways, I had some time and a spare Fractal Design R3 case, so I put the build into that and think it looks more interesting now, and a bit more cable managed even with the normal ribbon cables. I tried to also take a photo with some better light, because the previous one was so horribly taken with a flash, sorry. I wanted to keep both types of floppy drives and ran out of external bays so the smaller 1.44MB drive is now interestingly located in a HDD tray.. but sort of accessible if there is ever need to use it.

So this is the retro computer I've managed to put together completely from nib parts, it's a pretty decent computer for around 2001 or 2002. It's running Windows 98se with the high ram patch. It would probably be more appropriate to run WinXP on it but I've never used a 9x os before and wanted to experiment with one and dos games, anyways here's the parts list.

Chenming 601ATX-AW which is the OEM version of the Antec SX-800 and you can still buy these new with pretty substantial shipping costs

MSI K7T266pro2 that's been recapped

Athlon XP 1700+ Palomino

512mb DDR266

Radeon 8500LE 128mb

Sound blaster live 5.1 Platinum

Maxtor 40gb boot disk

Seagate Baracuda IV 60gb for games

Antec easy USB

Creative labs 4224 CD burner

PC power and cooling silencer case fans

PC power and cooling Turbocool 300-ATX
