use that system!

NAS system needs a lot more RAM than that, unfortunately, from what I've read. I don't think I could install even 1GB in the three slots there.

What we see here is the sSpec SY015 1996 Pentium 150 CPU, which has 1 core.

The ram on this 1995 motherboard predates DDR sdRAM which was prototyped in 1997. I would have been using this computer to dial up AOL to use AIM and other chatrooms. Google did not exist when I first used this computer. I am confident it still works but I don't know where the components are.

A cute little 8.4" mini laptop from 1999. Got it for $5 on auction a few days ago.

Unfortunately someone went berserk on it at some point, case was cracked in 2 locations and the whole left hinge is missing. Pisses me off because the auction photo did not have any cracks and the left hinge while mangled still had all the parts that I never got 😡 I repaired the cracks but the hinge will be difficult.

At least the LCD is flawless, and as crazy as it sounds the 2 batteries still last 1h-1h30 each 😮

Acer Travelmate 313T, Pentium MMX 266, 800x600 TFT, 16MB soldered RAM and came with a 64MB stick added, HDD was removed at some point. Has one USB1.1 port which is super handy to be able to use a modern flash drive to move stuff to. 2 PCMCIA slots as well, pretty impressive for such a tiny machine back then.

The supplied AC adapter was apparently dead (case had been cracked open and some "skid marks" visible on the plastic and shielding) so I didn't even try plugging it in. Laptop didn't power on with another supply, but upon disassembly the solder on the DC in jack looked a bit awkward - resoldered it and it fired right up.

Changed CMOS battery, added a CF-IDE and a small 1GB card (snatched a 8GB one on auction in the meantime), installed W98SE and it works just great. Was relatively easy to find the video driver, a bit more of a pain to get the audio one, found the one for the modem, so everything is fine now. Unfortnately I can't find the Acer Notebook Manager version that works with this, and the screen brightness buttons don't work without it - which might explain why the screen is pretty dim, likely set low and I have no way of changing it :(

The LCD cable seems a little flaky as well, I have some distorsion depending on how I move it. Probably due to the same abuse that caused the rest...

Can't find much information at all about this model online. Haven't even found a single picture - found some magazine ads mentioning the model and matching specs but with a picture of a completely different machine 🤣

I feel like attempting a repair of the left hinge and hopefully fixing the LCD cable, and maybe adding something to control screen brightness without the soft buttons. It's such a nice machine, pretty powerful for the generation, small and uncommon, and exactly my style - I'm very much into reduced size portables and it was actually a pleasant surprise because I hadn't noticed at all from the auction that it wasn't a full size machine...

Ordered some bigger RAM as well.

Also, @LinusTech always complaining about trackpad sizes should enjoy this one - literally less than 3 fingers wide 🤣

I dusted off my old Dell Inspiron 1420 from 2008 and have decided to replace some of the worn out shell with new parts, and install cloudready chromeOS.

So an Intel core2 Duo with 4 gigs of ddr2 ram currently has a 500 gig 7200 rpm hard drive considering replacing it with a SSD but don't want to overspend as I don't want to spend too much into a 12 year old laptop

I have this board + 2 x 4GB DDR3 2133MHz and a Xeon X5470, if you can identify this board you are awesome. Too bad mines dead though, this system was so fun to mess around with.

I’d absolutely be so excited if I ever got another one, but life priorities first.

Not sure the exact model on yours but I have it's evil twin.  The Nforce 780I, complete with delided and polished q6600 chip. :)

Yeah mine was the 790i Ultra, I might try to get the ftw board one day.

though with the 790i I was able to hit 4GHz on a X3230 (Q6700 Xeon) with a clc, back to the fun times of overclocking. The X5470 I had would do 4.6GHz, but I’m pretty sure that’s what kill the board...

Nice find! Does that thing have a heatsink, and do you have images of it and the other side of the motherboard? If you do, I would love to see them.

The whole aluminium shield around the RAM serves as heatsink, it's got a metal peg that goes down and presses against the PCB. The CPU is on the bottom under the bracket and is pressed against the board. So it's cooled through the PCB by the alu block. No fan.

I forgot to take photos from the top when the alu block was removed. Will do if I take it apart again

The CPU has pretty uncommon packaging:

This has nice pictures too: Auction... although it hurts that it's listed as "for scrap gold recovery"  😡

8GB card received, reinstalling W98SE since I haven't managed to copy the other install across for some reason. Tried both a whole disk copy as well as installing DOS, checking it booted, then just copying all files across but neither ends up booting. Probably the way the BIOS detects this one causes some misalignment or something...

There's a couple of old pre-built systems in my parents attic...

-Acer Across - Pentium 120mhz, 24mb EDO Ram (upgraded from 8mb), 510mb HDD running Windows 95 Plus!

-Tiny (defunkt PC retailer in the UK) - Pentium 2 333mhz, 128mb Ram (upgraded from 64 i think), onboard ati graphics, and we added a 12mb Voodoo2 3D Accelerator Card and a 2x CD Burner - originally running Windows 98, then Me, then XP.

After these i started building all the PC's we've had, and have sold old parts off... if it wasn't for being lockdown at my own house i'd dig these out and see if they still worked.

Cable management is horrible.

Those lovely little XPC boxes didn't leave much room for cable management, especially in the IDE days, the biggest issue being aftermarket power supplies, whose 24pin power leads are waaaaay too long. I'd love to get a high quality power supply with the proper length cables, but I'm unaware of any.

I know Shuttle still makes XPC systems, but they aren't as revolutionary as when they first appeared on the market.

How did you manage that? I thought 2TB was the limit for those old systems, or is it a function of the OS instead?

Another one of my old(er) systems.

HP Microserver N40L. Low-power AMD dual-core Turion (I think) 1.5Ghz, 8GB RAM ECC (will go to 16, but the pricetag is jaw dropping) custom BIOS, RAID with 1TB in 4 drives, low power/low profile video card (AMD something) and sound card.

Again, apologies for the quality of the shots, at home, rather than in the studio with proper lighting. This was pretty much ambient.

@RadiumAngel

Loved my old Shuttle XPC with Core2Duo E8400.  It's what I learned Linux on, basically.  Had 5 hard drives I picked up used for average $10 each and put different distros on each.  The swap was SO easy with the Shuttle.  I fact, I rarely had the case cover attached because I was trying out distros quite frequently!

At that time I had a access to a desktop with a Celeron D 2.4GHz, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, integrated SiS graphics, a case that vibrated and rattled horrendously and dialup. It was actually slower than the laptop that replaced it by a lot (had twice the RAM and storage though).

Does it count if it's a 8 year old TV that I still use, despite being broken to hell?
Haha. Seriously though. I also have an HD 6950 from 10 years ago.. Took Quite a beating! It's been 'Repaired' about 12 times as you can probably tell..
