Don't lump me in with them. I'm an enthusiast of mechanic design, be it engines, weaponry, or productive machinery. Not a guy with a wrench that reads the marketing garbage AFE/insert other "enthusiast" brand that can't legally warranty half of their products.

I fail to see a correlation between people screeching variations of "forced induction is more efficient!!! Reclaimed energy!!!" and anything I've said.

If you can't be civil. Please leave

Edit. That goes for everyone in the thread

Swirl flaps (or might be called Vortex dampers) on the intake .. they are the most common failure for both the 4pot M47 and 6pot M57 IIRC (they break off and fly into the engine)
Since its a BMW .. check for leaking oil anywhere on the engine, rear main seal is known to go on them

then typical Diesel issues of EGR related issues.. as long as the EGR valve aint clogged, its fine.

and any turbo engine related thing ... watch out for dead or dying turbos on them

otherwise it should be fine
Gearboxes are usually the last thing to go wrong on them just the dual mass flywheel on manual gearboxes could become an issue over time

And cracking wiring, I see that ALL the time on BMW's especially older ones.

Ended up getting a video feed of the underside and it was not glorious.. All wheel arch* on the vehicle was rusted and the pan for the oil was.. looked like it had driven 70mp/h on a dump and cracked it. Told me they would fix before i buyed it but this threw me off a bit.. Gonna be a bit more troughout and possibly get a friend to help me check out newer cards too..  Was checking out a 730D Auto where i live and the entire bottom exhaust was missing while the back axles looked like they were about to fall off any moment.

Maybe getting a shit-car or box is gonna be harder than i thought, secret rust creeping in seems to be a major problem on any car.

Being it's finally getting to be winter in my area and too cold to ride on 2 wheels.  Brought the bike inside the house for some winter maintenance.  It's so much nicer than working on the cold concrete garage floor.  Old timing belt off and new belts put back on. Ordered new front brake pads for it today so those will be on next weeks list once they arrive.

Ooooooh what mats are you using?

What it's sitting on?  It's just a cheap carpet runner from the local home store.  Makes it nice that the stands don't scratch up the flooring.

yeah, i think with older cars you need to lower your expectations A LOT or expect to pay big money for a good one unless you are lucky

Rust on arches and even the underside of the whole car is a stupidly common thing especially in the colder areas and i wouldn't worry much about it, not the most difficult of fixes.

cracked oil pan is bad ... that could mean multiple things could be wrong as well ... and personally id try to stay away from that

also imo a shitbox wont ever be perfect, aint that kinda the point of a shitbox? 😅

On an E91? Cant say I've heard of them suffering with rust issues. Pretty sure theyre galvanised unlike the previous shapes

E91 is the generation right? When i saw the rust i know it wont be easy to fix.. This coming from a guy that owned a volvo 850 from 1996 (2012-2020) and now owns a new volvov v70 d3 from 2016 😛

It looked like it had been crummed/crashed badly and then straigthened out.. Think ill look for something newer than 2010 or 11. I've found some 730D's and a audi 3.0tdi but all the insurance is 200€ a month regardless x'D

edit: Mostly because i want the top-package including the "if motor dies = we replace" note.. I really dont want to go from a tech-guy to having to change an entire engine on a car.. Even if that sounds alot fun haha.

Been looking at a decent priced OBD scanner to turn of the antispin on the V70

Pull off the connector from one of the ABS sensors.... (make sure you seal it properly so it wont end up stuffed with dirt and grime)

Yeah thats the generation

Thatd be my bet, its been in an accident and repaired poorly. The shape that preceeded it was known for rusting arches/front wings

ABS motor fuse may be easier to grab at.

That wont disable the ESP, it can still play with the butterfly valve. If it cant sense rotation on one wheel it will "kill" both the ABS and ESP.

I'm not intimately familiar with Volvo but every ABS/Trac system I've worked with needed all system components working to operate, and having the ABS pump motor dead will set a code and disable the system. Sometimes connectors for wheel speed sensors are absolutely buried in the engine bay or under panels in the cabin (for rear wheel sensors). If Volvo can still work without all system parts working that's pretty cool and new to me.

A squirrel decided to gift us with some more work to do on my mom's car right before I went back to college! Nothing in the passenger side headlight assembly was working and I was getting really strange voltage readings on the wires that connected to it; 0V on the headlight and DRL and 0.5V on the turn signal. My dad and I took 2 days checking wiring to see if anything was broken, and I found this under the driver's side headlight assembly when I went to check the voltage on it. A squirrel chewed on some grounding wires that somehow took out only one set of lights and nothing else. I'm glad I was able to find this, because beneath the opposite side headlight assembly was one of the last places I would've thought to look.

This is like 70% of my job, finding and fixing things like this. Some customers get so mad that fixing one wire cost them 3 hours of labor time and I'm mechanic I should already know what's wrong from the codes in the machine, just plug it into the machine and it tells me everything I'm just a scammer.

Why every now and then this thing decides to give me 40 mpg instead of 30-32 like usual? Pic taken 15 miles into my commute home.

Second time this has happened. First time was like a week after I got it.

I'm like not doing anything differently to get significantly more. I mean that's at least a 20℅ difference from normal,  its not small

So there's a chance later this year I might be able to purchase one of these

image.thumb.png.01729cc286cbd2cdda797a114528021b.png

If I was more open to buying a manual and sacrificing a bunch of creature comforts, the Corolla Hatch is pretty nifty lol

but this seems like a nicer blend of every day commuting and weekend utility, eventually I want to get something more fun possibly something Saab again, just probably not a 9-3 unless it was the wagon.
